Santiago 31 is in a fantastic location in the center of Guimarães, right above a great bar. The dorm I stayed in had a view of the bustling square with the castle in the distance. This is a place for people who want to be in the middle of things. I had no problem falling asleep to the ambient noise of clinking glasses and the chatting crowd outside. The back rooms are probably quieter. I loved being so close to everything I wanted to see.
The breakfast included a different local pastry each day, along with an assortment of coffee cake, toast, cereal, eggs, coffee, tea and juice. The communal kitchen and bathroom were always clean during my stay. I enjoyed working from the lounge. I work remotely and the wifi situation was good throughout the hostel, including in the back garden. It's clear that thought and care has been put into setting things up so they're comfortable and functional.
The manager is friendly and accommodating. When I checked in he set me up with maps and recommendations. This thing where you can text the front desk to let him know when you're going to check in and ask random questions is awesome. He checked in to make sure everything was okay throughout my stay. Even after I checked out he offered to hold onto my bag and give me a key to the front door if I wanted to use the lounge before I caught my bus. read more
