If I were to tell you there is a picturesque village overlooking rolling hills and a pristine lake…read morein the Roman countryside, you'd say, "Okay, that sounds nice." But if I threw in a notorious cult and some world famous miniature strawberries, I bet I'd have your full attention. Let me introduce you to Nemi, Italy. Perched high above an ancient volcanic lake, the tiny village of Nemi offers much to intrepid day-trippers from Rome. Worship of the goddess Diana flourished in the 6th Century BCE, bringing thousands of pilgrims to a sanctuary known as the Temple of Diana. Although there's not much to see of the temple today, the foundation and remnants of the altar can be viewed if you scramble down the volcanic slope toward the lake. The protective slopes foster a habitat for Nemi Strawberries due to the volcanic soil, sunny southern exposure, and steep terrain that hinders foraging animals. If you've never heard of Nemi Strawberries, you're in for a delicious treat. The berries are smaller and sweeter than commercial strawberries grown in Peru or California, and have become the focus of the village's annual Strawberry Festival. Now let's get to the reason you're reading this review, Bar Delle Fragole. The bar's sole claim to fame is that it specializes in tarts and gelato made from Nemi Strawberries. I haven't found much information in English, but Italian reviews provide commentary on limited menu items and nonexistent customer service. I fully admit, I waited in the bar ten minutes before I was able to attract the attention of the only employee. Peak tourist season is April through June, so If you're in Nemi off-season, don't expect to see too many people. Please allow me to convince you, the sweet and juicy berries served in a buttery and flaky crust are well worth the wait.

Bar delle Fragole - In a town known for their alpine strawberries, I would expect nothing but perfection in their tarts... and it was, indeed, delicious!
