Santana's Sazon is a hidden gem for Dominican and Caribbean food. Seating is very limited, so it's better suited for carryout or delivery. I ordered carryout, and the service was quick. I ordered one beef empanada and one chicken empanada. Wow. The pastry was perfectly crisp and flaky, and both were packed with a savory, cheesy filling. The accompanying Santana sauce was creamy, tangy, and absolutely bomb.com. Easy 5/5 for the empanadas. I also ordered the Chicken Canasta de Plátano, which consists of fried green plantain cups filled with shredded chicken and topped with Santana sauce. It was a unique dish, and I'd never had anything like it before. I'd give it a 4/5, but only because I personally preferred the empanadas over the plantain cups. The menu has several items I don't see very often around Kansas City, and I'm already looking forward to trying more of it. I'm not usually in Olathe, but whenever I am, Santana's Sazon is definitely going into the rotation. Overall: 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 for the unique menu and excellent execution. My only suggestion would be to offer a few more house-made sauces. If Santana's signature sauce is any indication, I think they'd absolutely knock the sauce game out of the park. read more

I had heard about this little gem from a co worker. I finally stopped by and was pleasantly surprised. Plentiful portions. Great service. The owners are extremely hardworking and very personable. I was craving chicharron with tostones and they did not disappoint. The food is fresh and made ready to order. They are primarily a take out place but have been thoughtful enough to consider someone might want to have their meal there. They have set tables and chairs for you to do so. The portions are hearty. The food was delicious and I am thankful to have this little gem so close to home. I look forward to trying more of their menu options. Very authentic Colombian and Dominican. This NYRican was raised on pigeon peas and rice. So of course I had to check them out. The place is clean and well lit. The lady taking my order was sweet and polite. I chose to order in person but will order online from now on. Having lived in Miami I recognized a Cuban accent in the waiting area, the gentleman and his friends were waiting for their order . Just left this haven of deliciousness. Don't be scared off by the humble strip mall exterior--inside is a Caribbean flavor bomb waiting to go off in your mouth. The chicharrones? Melt-in-your-mouth pork candy. No joke. L was in love with his beef empanadas. The vegetarian in our group was vibing hard with the beans and rice. And the Jamaican among us--our toughest critic with sky-high standards--gave it a genuine thumbs up. That's no small feat. This is a no-frills spot. Think food truck with a door and a few tables. As far as I know, this is the only place in metropolitan Kansas City where you can sit down and enjoy Colombian food. The owner is Dominican, and they also offer Dominican dishes. Very good quality. A little hole in the wall Dominican restaurant. They have a lot of ice cream treats, but we came for a meal. They only have four tables here, fyi! Tried their chicken meat plate, with a salad and ripe plantains. We also got a beef and cheese empanada and a beef arepas. So glad we found this place because my goodness... so yummy. The chicken was juicy, so flavorful. I loved their rice with beans. The ripe plantains were sweet and a lovely ending to the meal. Arepas and empanada were also delicious. Everything came out super fresh and hot. We had to wait about 10 min, but totally fast wait and worth it. Small restaurant with maybe 4 tables, but they have great service and excellent food. Their arepas are so tasty, probably one of the best I've had outside of my great grandmother's. I ordered their beef and cheese empanada, so flaky and crispy with tasty filling. The Santana meal with chicken, the chicken had such great flavor, and the rice was delicious. I definitely recommend giving this place a try. You will not be disappointed. You can order online before you get there if you are short on time as they make everything to order, so it's about a 20-minute wait. But the wait is so worth it. My dine-in lunch experience at this fairly new Dominican/Colombian/Ice Cream restaurant was okay, with room for improvement. My chicken Santana's meal ($12.00) included my choice of meat, rice, a small number of beans, salad and choice of either green or ripe fried plantains. It was ready just eight minutes after I ordered at the counter, where the service was accommodative. I liked the light citrus dressing on the cool and crisp salad, the good portion of moist and somewhat flavorful rice, the tasty fried green plantains and the good portion of boneless dark chicken. I was surprised that the chicken was unseasoned, but maybe that's appropriate for Colombian/Dominican cuisine. Great food , full of flavor. I hade the Colombian empanada and omg they were so crunchy and full of meat and potatoes I didn't even need an entree. The front desk clerk was so helpful explaining everything to me that I wasn't familiar with. Unfortunately I wasn't prepared in the fact that this is more of take out restaurant. If you are looking for a true authentic Dominican food this is the place to go! It is run by a very nice and friendly Dominican and it is a fast service. It is not a place for you to go with a group and sit down but if there is a couple of you, you can make it work.
