Not in the mood for cooking, so we decided to explore some new flavors! Tried a beef empanada and the Lomo Saltado at Antojitos del Perú tonight. It's a nice little restaurant, with plenty of seating, and the service is fantastic! The flavors are off the charts amazing, and the empanada was so light and crispy I could've eaten as many as they brought me . The empanada also had boiled egg in it, which was delicious. The lomo saltado is marinated beef sauteed with tomatoes and onions and soy sauce, with fries and rice. I did notice under desserts they have flan and chocoflan. read more

I got really excited to see South American representation. However I was slightly disappointed when I chose the ceviche and it didn't come with the squid and octopus like it had mentioned in the description. This is my favorite Peruvian place in KC, and while it is true that I know of no other Peruvian places in KC I have nothing but the highest praise for them. I have had tons of Peruvian food in LA and Miami and this restaurant is on par with the quality and authenticity. Amazing service. The menu offers up a variety of options, but I focused on the rice-based dishes. Of those, the Aeropuerto de Pollo (chicken fried rice) and the Arroz con Mariscos (rice with seafood) stood out. Both dishes featured contrasting textures and bold flavors. Those flavors tasted better when I added some of the green and red sauce to the mix. I will warn you, service was a bit of an adventure. Some of the staff only speaks Spanish, which is fine. My servers were patient and polite while we got on the same page. They also did a good job following up and making sure I enjoyed my visit. Flavorless food (with one glorious exception) and abysmal service even for a slow evening made this visit a disappointment beyond saving. For our starters, I ordered the empanadas and my friend ordered the papa rellena. The potato portion of the papa rellena couldn't have even been salted, much less seasoned with anything else. They were fried, but neither of us could taste whatever seasoning was in the "seasoned flour" the menu indicated it was fried in. The filling was decent, but the proportion of potato to filling was so mismatched that the filling wound up feeling just as bland as the potato. BUT THOSE EMPANADAS!! BEST empanadas I've ever had. Anywhere... But then the entrees came. My Jalea de Mariscos was a woeful disappointment. The breading the seafood was fried in tasted like nothing. I assumed that I was meant to use some sort of sauce, but all they brought me was a vinegar-based pepper sauce and a bottle of... mayonnaise? Yes, a giant squeeze bottle of mayo. And lest you accuse me of mistaking some Peruvian cream for mayo, I'll clarify that the waitress flat-out told us that's what it was. I wondered if I misunderstood her, tasted it, and quickly realized that it was truly straight mayo. The only other sauce they offered was a vinegar-based pepper sauce. It tasted exactly like that pepper stuff they used to (maybe still do?) put at the table side in Steak 'n' Shake. The bottles of vinegar with peppers soaking in them. The flavor was obviously a disappointment, but I couldn't even eat everything on the plate. The octopus was so tough that I couldn't chew it. The yucca was undercooked and almost crunchy. The two corn sides were so starchy and unpleasant that neither my friend nor I could eat them. One was a "fried" corn, but the kernels I attempted to eat were, again, inedible. I managed to bite into one, and it really just tasted like when you get to the bottom of a bag or bowl of popcorn and you eat a kernel. I'll reiterate again that there was no seasoning at all on either of those sides. My buddy ordered the Aeropuerto de carne. It looked really well-seasoned and flavorful, but it was anything but. Such a massive let-down. When we inquired about dessert, we were told that they had NONE of the desserts that appeared on the menu except for the chocoflan. Funnier still was that they had some desserts on massive window posters that weren't even listed in the menu. How does that work...??? The nail in the coffin was the service. Our server was lovely and sweet, but wholly inattentive. My friend ordered a Colombiana (a bottled soda) at the beginning of our meal, even before we had placed our food order. Despite reminding our server about it twice during the meal, she never brought it over UNTIL SHE BROUGHT THE CHECK. What's more, she brought it over opened, so my friend couldn't just save it for later (we were going for coffee after dinner). I'm not sure what was going on that night. We were one of only three tables dining that night, and the other two had only three and four patrons each. I would never come back here except to stop by for a few empanadas for lunch or something. read more

I am no expert when it comes to Peruvian food, but there is something legit about a restaurant when its staff primarily speaks their native tongue and little to no English. I was in a group of five people, and luckily, one person spoke a decent amount of Spanish so we had an easy time ordering. I ordered the lomo saltado for lunch and then the mil hojas for dessert. The other four in our party all ordered different things. All of us enjoyed our meals. The portion size is hearty, and the food itself is flavorful. The beef in the lomo saltado was tender and plentiful, and the mil hojas was light and flaky. You will not go wrong with whatever you order, but pick from the pictures on the menu when in doubt since those are the signature items. The food can take a bit of time since it is made-to-order, but the wait is worth it. Service is decent though it can be a bit challenging but not impossible if you do not have a Spanish speaker in your party. Do not be intimidated. Get out of your comfort zone, enjoy some Peruvian food, and then pay at the counter when you are done. read more

The food and Maracuya Sour were very good. We ordered the Aji de Gallina and Chaufa with shrimp, and both plates made us feel like we were back in Peru! I can't speak to the true authenticity of the food, considering I am not Peruvian and only visited the country for a few weeks, but I enjoyed it and was very similar in quality to what I ate in Peru. My only complaint is that we were charged twice for something we only had one of, and I think it was due to having two waitresses. It was a little confusing that two different waitresses kept checking on us and took our drink and food orders. Apart from that, we had a great experience. Clean restaurant, friendly and helpful server, authentic Peruvian food. They bring out nuts with a special green hot sauce while you look over the menu. We ordered chicken empanadas as an appetizer and my husband had the lamb "stew" (which would not be what Americans would call stew) but was very juicy and most lamb shanks with a green stew sauce over them, with rice and beans. I ordered the whole tilapia which is a fully cooked fish with head included. It was wonderful and tasty and it came with rice and a side salad. We were full and satisfied.
