Walking in you'll find it's a very bright, cheerful atmosphere, very clean, with about ten tables (I think), and two tv's playing Spanish music. The people are nice and very efficient. Chef Joseph is phenomenal. He was manning the register when I went in. I'd never been to a Mexican & Salvadoran restaurant before. I'm familiar with Mexican American food, a little bit with truly authentic Mexican, and not at all with Salvadoran. Chef Joseph came out from behind the counter and sat at my table explaining the menu to me, the dishes, the flavor profiles. He gave suggestions on what order based on what I told him I liked. I got one of the combo dishes mainly because it offered a variety of proteins and side dishes. I also saw several more items in the menu that I knew I wanted to try on my next visit. The food was delicious! I surprised myself by finishing the whole plate. I was also delighted to find La Cocina De Mary had atole. It's a traditional cold weather drink made with masa harina, milk, and spices. My tia made it when I was a kid, so there's fond memories. This one was better ... and lucky for me tia isn't on Yelp and will never read this. They have soft drinks and a few alcohol drinks that I may try next time. The one that's a bloody mary except with beer instead of vodka sounded interesting. Next time I go, I'm taking FPO with me. This is a great little place and I hope they're there for a long time to come.

Today's review comes to you from Lenexa! I headed out with a crew to check out this El Salvadoran joint and see if it lived up to the hype--and man, it did not disappoint. Everything hit the table steaming hot and fresh, which is exactly how it should be. Here's the breakdown of the spread: The Main Event: I went with the Asada Milanesa. The ribeye was the star of the show--perfectly seasoned, tender on the inside, and had that satisfying crisp on the outside. It came paired with a solid specialty rice and a fresh side salad. The "Mystery" Side: I grabbed a pork tamale and what I think was an empanada. The tamale was incredibly tasty and hit all the right notes. The empanada had a bit of a unique texture--honestly, it's very possible there was a mix-up and I ended up swapping appetizers with someone else at the table, but hey, that's half the fun of a group dinner! The Drink: You can't skip the giant-sized Michelada. It was cold, refreshing, and the perfect kick to wash everything down. I'm a guy who usually loves a little extra heat--give me all the jalapeños and specialty hot sauce--and while this meal was great as-is, the flavors were spot on. I really wanted to squeeze in dessert, but between "sampling" everyone else's plates and finishing my own, I was at total capacity. The best part? The bill didn't bust my wallet like the food busted my stomach. The pricing is very reasonable for the quality you're getting. The restaurant itself is in a unique little spot but it's very clean and the staff is very friendly. The Verdict: If you're looking for some authentic El Salvadoran flavor in Lenexa, I highly recommend giving this place a taste test of your own. Your stomach (and your bank account) will thank you! read more
