From the moment you walk onto campus, the atmosphere can feel chaotic and exhausting. The hallways flood with crowds of students trying to get to class before the bell, turning something as simple as walking down the hall into what feels like navigating rush-hour traffic. The classrooms often feel outdated and uncomfortable, with harsh fluorescent lights and desks that seem designed to make every minute stretch on forever. The bell schedule marches forward with no mercy, and by the middle of the day it can feel like time itself has slowed down. Lunch is another adventure entirely. The cafeteria can be crowded and loud, and the food sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. Many students end up wondering whether it's better to eat quickly or just wait until they get home. On top of all that, the overall environment can feel stressful, with constant noise, drama, and pressure that makes the day feel longer than it should. By the time the final bell rings, many students leave campus feeling less like they've had a productive day of learning and more like they've survived a very long one. If school is supposed to be a place that inspires curiosity and excitement, this experience unfortunately feels more like the opposite. Hopefully improvements can be made in the future so students can actually enjoy their time here instead of simply counting down the minutes until the day ends.

I recall the school principle wearing red boots that me and my friends called hooker heels. I remember the history/PE teacher (his name I will not disclose) writing in his notebook on the school roof while we did our physical exercises. Me and my friends would come up with emo/"profound" lines he might have been writing in his notebook. We also thought he was super mean and heartless because he'd make us run our 1/2 mile (4 days out of the 5 days) and 1 mile (1 day of the 5 days) even in the rain. As an Asian kid with a superstitious grandma, I thought I was going to for sure get sick! My friends and I were also certain that he was having an affair with the Asian secretary (?) at school. He would also flirt with the good-looking moms during school field trips. I also remember my creepy Spanish teacher who bragged a lot about his daughter and who always got chalk on his butt from leaning on the board. I had a good-looking female math teacher who ran a lot of marathons and an English teacher with a dog who had to wear diapers because of his uncontrollable bowel movements. She used my posters as the class example for how posters should look like because she favored me. I could turn in lower quality work and not get docked points for it. I learned about my love for cooking after taking a foods course here in the 7th grade. Our first recipe was rice krispy treats and our 2nd was for muffins. I also took a ceramics class with a hippie-dippie quirky teacher who turned a Simon and Garfunkel song into a "score and slip" ceramics-related song.

Pros: - Teachers that really helped through this high school were Ms. Rice, Mr. O'brien, Mr. Shank, Ms. Martinson, and Ms. Milner (who doesn't work here anymore). - The Key club, Anime club, Interact Club, and Camp Everytown club were very welcoming. - I was able to take a school bus to the high school from where I live. Only for students with disabilities though. Cons: - The counseling was horrible. They had me started in both ESL and Special Ed courses for my first year, which I felt that I did not really need to be in. This made me behind a year from my class. Also, they made it hard for me to switch around my classes. - I couldn't take enrichment for some of my courses during the summer because they were not offered due to the budget cuts. Community college was the only option. - Writing Tutoring was hard to come by. - Math Tutoring was only available on certain days when the teacher was available. - The library was often close. So I had to study in one of my teachers' classrooms. - Having your ID out on your neck was mandatory. - The alternate schedules where you didn't know when you are going to have a certain class during that day. Overall, it was a okay school. I only made connections with a few people after the 2009 graduation.

Because of the unique way teachers are engaging students, the number of English Learners reclassified to English Proficient has almost tripled since it was implemented. You can find some great teachers and administrators in every district, the difference in Oak Grove is that they work with precision to provide the tools and strategies to make an impact where it matters most, in the classroom. With 12 schools receiving the award for CORE Academic Growth and student scores continuing to exceed the state, I think that speaks for itself.

My granddaughter has been sick three separate times since August when the school year started, I have made several complaints about that and now today I receive an excessive illness notification letter, which I find very ridiculous. I think from the district perspective a full evaluation needs to take place. I have spoke to several people there at the district and all I'm doing is getting the runaround. I am not getting the support that I need. I blamed the district not the elementary school this elementary school needs so much attention from the district, and they have just shoved them under the rug please if any parents are looking for a School do not choose this one nor the district.

It's interesting to note how I just mentioned "our family" in reference to ACDS, because it's true - from the start it never felt like it was just my daughter being welcomed into a classroom. My husband and I were also ushered into a community of parents, children, teachers, administrators, and staff that truly are a community. This sense of familiarity and care, right from the start, was welcome. We looked at ACDS for my daughter after having been with a couple of other schools in the region that seemed to emphasize academics above all else. Academics are of course important, but I also wanted my daughter to have the chance to play and explore other possible interests. ACDS has a full complement of enrichment and extracurricular activities. Science, art, drama, music, you name it. There's a choir and a band. And every year every grade puts on a theater production, which I'm hoping next year can be done in the brand new Event Center. When school closed for COVID in March of last year, ACDS was ready for it. They moved their entire educational program online within a matter of 3 days, and it has been going strong ever since. When the school reopened for in-person learning in the fall, they continued the remote learning option alongside it. My daughter is presently the only child left online in her class, though she will be returning to school next week. Her teacher has been in close touch with me to make sure that she feels included and supported. The real gift is that my daughter has felt she is an active and important part of the community no matter where she physically is in relation to the school. And speaking of the teachers, wow! Dedicated and enthusiastic sound cliche but I assure they are not. The thought and energy they put into their lessons, especially even across two learning platforms, is phenomenal. If they had a high school, I would be planning to send my daughter. But for now I will just enjoy the stellar preparation she is getting for whatever step she chooses next.

In my experience, the…read moreenvironment was particularly difficult for families seeking a supportive and inclusive approach, for example for students with learning and attentional differences. If your child is energetic, social, and learns best through encouragement, engagement, and positive reinforcement, I would encourage you to ask detailed questions of administrators and parents about the middle school's approach to these students before enrolling. I was particularly concerned by what I experienced as an excessively punitive and anxiety-producing approach to discipline and academic expectations. At times, the way students were treated appeared to undermine their confidence and enthusiasm for learning rather than support their development.I was also disappointed by the gap between the school's stated mission and what our family experienced in practice. There appeared to be limited attention to students' social-emotional needs, and I found the administration insufficiently receptive to families seeking additional support or collaboration with outside resources.Overall, the middle school experience had a lasting negative effect on my child's confidence and relationship with learning. Families considering the school may want to ask specifically about learning support, counseling and social-emotional resources, disciplinary practices, and how the administration works with families whose children learn differently.

DO NOT ATTEND IF YOU CAN. Deeply disappointing experience that the teaching staff, administration,…read moreand students all played a role in. The pre-pandemic experience was good but the post-pandemic experience was extremely poor. Was physically assaulted on the basis of my sexuality and administration had asked me to be as quiet about the situation to avoid controversy. Administration would constantly bother students over extremely minor things such as completing work outside during the tutorial period or sitting in a car during the lunch or snack break. (I have heard the micromanaging has gotten significantly worse after I left.) Teachers are generally mediocre or genuinely uninterested in teaching; I was interested in pursuing computer science but I found that to be challenging since in my introductory computer science course, my computer science teacher would only teach for 15 minutes during two hour block periods before spending the rest of the time playing computer games. Felt extremely uncomfortable when a teacher seemingly accidentally made a joke calling a dark-skinned student "three-fifths of a student." One teacher has had a history of predatory behavior to young women, even minors, but still continues to teach. Student culture is also poor. Being around these students will motivate you to be successful as they are very driven but there is a toxic competitive culture where students feel like they need to one-up each other in order to succeed. Lots of explicit racism towards black and hispanic people (if you are part of these demographics I highly suggest not coming here) and undertones of racism as some students only prefer being close to students of their own ethnicity / race. Leland comparatively has significantly less resources to other high schools in the area of similar academic caliber. Affluent & competitive students use outside resources such as expensive tutoring services and college counseling to fulfill their academic goals, creating a gap between students who are able to and actively use these resources and students who don't (important to consider as in the college application process, you directly compete with these students.) Leland may or may not be a place where you can succeed and thrive depending on the type of person you are. However, it will likely not be a space where you feel happy or comfortable if you do not conform to the dominant demographics of the school. If you are a parent looking to buy or rent a home in this area with the allure of the "great schools nearby" I strongly suggest you look elsewhere.
