We enrolled…read moreour child into pre school for the very first time & couldn't have been more nervous, coming out of the pandemic. Everyday for the first week, my child cried with anxiety. The comfort Ms Madhavi & Ms Naila gave him, warmed my heart. The changes that we've seen in him are dramatic. My child can put on his own jacket, write letters/numbers, knows how to do some basic math & sings all day long! He used to be extremely shy, but now he's opened up so much. He comes home and tells us that Ms Naila helps him at school. What parent doesn't want hear that?? We are keeping our fingers crossed that Ms Naila will be our child's summer program teacher. Overall, tuition is a little hefty, but we are happy with his development under Ms Naila's care.

I participate in the School Site Council, which is a group of parents and teachers, that meets periodically to review the school's budget and learning programs. This gives me an intimate view on what the school does on a day-to-day basis. We have a new principal this year who is amazing but the old principal was equally amazing. As far as review below, I am sorry this person had this experience but some of the information is not true. Homework is determined overall by each teacher based on student needs but can be tailored by parents as well. Some families (like ours) actually wanted less homework as it was interfering with our limited family time at home. In the end, you as a parent can have your child do as much homework as you want. As far as comparisons to other schools, since I am on the Site Council, I get to see the test data from Taylor and all other schools in district. Taylor is at the top of the list in all categories. You as a parent or perspective parent can ask to see the same data. Graystone Elementary is in Almaden Valley and will have higher test scores because it has a very low ESL (English as second language) population compared to Taylor or other schools in Oak Grove School District. FYI - Great Schools changed its rating system last year so that is why a lot of schools now have lower ratings. Looking at current GreatSchools ratings, Glider is actually a "6" and Santa Teresa is an "8." Not sure why GreatSchools gives Santa Teresa an "8" as test scores are very similar between the three schools. My recollection is that ratings for all schools in area used to be higher, but have now gone down. It is easy to focus on ratings but they don't tell the complete story. It's interesting to note how I just mentioned "our family" in reference to ACDS, because it's true - from the start it never felt like it was just my daughter being welcomed into a classroom. My husband and I were also ushered into a community of parents, children, teachers, administrators, and staff that truly are a community. This sense of familiarity and care, right from the start, was welcome. We looked at ACDS for my daughter after having been with a couple of other schools in the region that seemed to emphasize academics above all else. Academics are of course important, but I also wanted my daughter to have the chance to play and explore other possible interests. ACDS has a full complement of enrichment and extracurricular activities. Science, art, drama, music, you name it. There's a choir and a band. And every year every grade puts on a theater production, which I'm hoping next year can be done in the brand new Event Center. When school closed for COVID in March of last year, ACDS was ready for it. They moved their entire educational program online within a matter of 3 days, and it has been going strong ever since. When the school reopened for in-person learning in the fall, they continued the remote learning option alongside it. My daughter is presently the only child left online in her class, though she will be returning to school next week. Her teacher has been in close touch with me to make sure that she feels included and supported. The real gift is that my daughter has felt she is an active and important part of the community no matter where she physically is in relation to the school. And speaking of the teachers, wow! Dedicated and enthusiastic sound cliche but I assure they are not. The thought and energy they put into their lessons, especially even across two learning platforms, is phenomenal. If they had a high school, I would be planning to send my daughter. But for now I will just enjoy the stellar preparation she is getting for whatever step she chooses next.

At times, the way students were treated appeared to undermine their confidence and enthusiasm for learning rather than support their development.I was also disappointed by the gap between the school's stated mission and what our family experienced in practice. There appeared to be limited attention to students' social-emotional needs, and I found the administration insufficiently receptive to families seeking additional support or collaboration with outside resources.Overall, the middle school experience had a lasting negative effect on my child's confidence and relationship with learning. Families considering the school may want to ask specifically about learning support, counseling and social-emotional resources, disciplinary practices, and how the administration works with families whose children learn differently.

The teachers were very supportive both academically and emotionally for our son (which was really great given the situation - very bitter divorce between my husband and his ex). Now our younger son is there, and he LOVES it. Mrs. Middleman has been a superb principal for at least the last two years (as long as our younger son has been there), and we were VERY sad to see her go. Last year the first graders had a "50s day" to celebrate the 50th day of school, and Mrs. Middleman was out there with us, hula hooping and hand jiving with the kids. You can tell she really cares about the students. I'm sure that there are "bad" teachers somewhere at this school, but we haven't encountered one yet, and everything I hear about different teachers is positive. If I had one "negative" to say about the school its that I miss the lady who used to work in the front office. When my younger son started kindergarten in 2015, the same gal from 10 years ago when my oldest was there was still working the front desk, and she was so great. The ladies there now are great too, but I miss her. :( They started offering Transitional Kindergarten this past year, and we are super looking forward to our daughter starting as a "TKer" next year. Also, the on campus YMCA is the absolute best ever. Ms, Nicole is AMAZING with the kids. She's been there for at least 10 years (she ran it when our older son was there). Both of our boys LOVE her. And our older son still talks about some of the other staff (Montel and Smith) who worked there when he was there. Every day when I go to pick up my son from the Y, he asks if I can come back later to get him because he's right in the middle of something (sometimes a craft, sometimes just playing with friends). Its such a great feeling to know your children are happy and being taken good care of while you are at work. :) Overall this school is an amazing gem hidden away in south SJ. We are in San Jose, but part of the Morgan Hill school district, so we have the best of both worlds. And its right in our neighborhood, so we can walk the kids to school in the morning if we want... small town living in a big city!

My oldest child attended here K-8 so we've had the unique opportunity to see the program all the way through from beginning to end. Now, as a sophmore at a traditional high school, he is doing well academically, is confident, and is successfully juggling school sports, club sports, friends, and his studies. Despite having one child with an IEP and another with a 504, all 3 of my children have flourished equally within the program and had adequate supports in all areas. They enjoy the field trips, the arts, the enrichments and electives, the fundraising events throughout the year, and all of the amazing friendships they've created along the way. The learning experience is so different from what you see in most traditional schools. The kids get to participate in so many amazing things like social emotional learning, parent-led enrichments, working in the school garden, and monthly field trips that bring what they're learning to life. One of the most unique parts of Indigo is the parent participation model. Being able to spend time in the classroom and on the playground with your child is really special and honestly invaluable. You get to know your child's friends and their parents, which creates a strong and supportive community. It's been wonderful getting to know the families and feeling like we're all working together to support the kids. Another thing I really appreciate is the sense of safety on campus. The school is gated and locked during the day, but on top of that there are often many parent volunteers around campus, which adds an extra layer of visibility and support for the students. Parent participation does require a commitment, but the school and the PTA work with families to make it manageable. I work full time and have still been able to make it work. What surprises me most is that more people don't know about this program! I think many people might not realize it's a full K-8 public school, so it's free and open to anyone to apply. If you're looking for a school where kids are engaged, learning in hands-on ways, and where families are truly part of the community, Indigo is the way to go!
