This is definitely a cool rest area, even simply for the Blue Angels fighter jet. If you are heading to Pensacola or even any further west on Interstate 10 and you get to mile marker 30, stop in and check this rest area out.

Before my mom died her favorite story to tell was a story about me, at this Florida welcome center, when I was just 4 years old. One day we were traveling from my grandparents house in Louisiana (her parents home) back to our home, here in Pensacola. We lived here in Pirate'cola when I was a baby, my father was in the service here. Anyway, as the story goes, we were driving back from grandmas house about 2 and a half hours drive. Everyone wanted to stop for orange juice & I had to pee. I was 4 so orange juice was very important & I was very excited to get my orange juice. Anyway, back in those days I was a little majorette in Kindergarten. I was a very good baton twirler, had a snazzy little blue sequined one piece body suit & white cowboy boots that I wore on the field at the football game. Anyway, I was the smallest majorette with my tiny baton & tiny tiny little white cowboy boots. I was so adorable! I wore them to my grandmothers to show her how cute I was, obviously, and was still wearing my cute little white boots on the way home. So I waited & waited so excited to get my orange juice but it was taking longer than I expected to pull into the Florida Welcome Center. We pull in & I jumped out of the car, running to the bathroom to pee so I could go get my Orange Juice! But i didn't make it up the hill & peed in my little white boots. When my mom got up the hill to the entrance, I was barefoot sitting on the grass. She asked me where are your little white boots & I pointed at the trash can. lol After I peed in my little white boots, I obviously did not need them anymore. duh. Anyway, I did get my orange juice & a new pair of little white boots the next week as I was taught to never litter. Till this very day, every time I come into Pensacola & see that big Florida Welcome sign, I always remember how much I love Florida, my memories of my mother, her exquisitely untarnished love for me & the smell of fresh new white cowboy boots. This is the Okaloosa County Rest Area for travelers heading east along Interstate 10. It is…read morelocated near mile marker 58 (though the center itself notes it as mile marker 60). When entering, cars will go to the left while trucks go to the right. Florida rest areas are open 24 hours a day. My visit to this rest area was on August 26, 2022. After traveling for a little while, it was time to take a break from driving and being on the road. This is the rest area we stopped at in Okaloosa County. The first stop at this rest area was to use the restroom. The restrooms were nice. They were pretty big for a rest area. They were also clean and well maintained too. Using the restroom isn't the only reason to stop at a rest area. I also took advantage of moving around and getting my body moving so that my legs don't cramp up while driving. They have a leg stretching trail, which is a little over a quarter mile in distance. There are spots here where you can take your pets to relieve themselves too, but pets are not allowed in the building (service animals only). There are several picnic tables, with some of them covered, as well as tree cover in the area too. This makes it a great place to stop for a bit. One of the signs here did surprise me a bit, as it noted that some organizations have permits to solicit at welcome centers and rest areas. We didn't encounter that on this visit, but it is good knowing this. Overall, the Okaloosa County Rest Area for I-10 East is very nice. There is something for everyone when it comes to taking a break, using the restroom, or even just taking in some of the sights or walking the stretch your legs trail. If your travels take you this way, this rest area is worth stopping in for a short bit.

From the moment you pull in, the grounds are clean, landscaped beautifully with that classic Southern charm, and the parking is spacious. Inside, the decor reflects a homely Alabama hospitality like going home to a Southern-style touches, informative displays about the state's history, attractions, music, and food, plus tons of free brochures and maps to help plan your trip. Restrooms were clean and semi modern-- no complaints there. The whole place feels safe during the day, welcoming, and well-maintained. If every state welcomed visitors this well, road trips would be even better! I recommend stopping in just to grab a picture of the state sign, whether you're just stretching your legs or grabbing travel directions. Alabama starts strong right there.

There are plenty of tables and lots of green space to walk around and get some fresh air. While there, I witnessed an employee starting her shift and saw some weeds in the garden and jumped right in to get them. She saw me and said she takes pride in her little garden there and makes sure it's the perfect welcome to Alabama! I liked the pelican structure and the informative plaques explaining the state's national parks, including one very near. If you need a spot to stretch your legs and take in some nature, this is a great stop!

The brisket sandwich was loaded with thick, juicy slices of perfectly smoked brisket that was tender, flavorful, and had just the right amount of smoky bark. The bun held up without getting soggy, and the subtle sauce complemented the meat without overpowering it. The paper wrapping that the sandwich was in is now a different story. The wrapping itself does not hold up to the heat, the hot sauces and the fabulous sliced meat. The paper inside wrapping kinda fell apart on the sandwhich and i spent more time peeling pieces off the meats. Hands down though one of the best gas station briskets I've ever had. The BBQ sandwich was equally impressive -- sweet, tangy pulled pork (or chopped beef?) with a perfect balance of smoke and seasoning. It was messy in the best way possible, packed with flavor, and left me completely satisfied. For any road trip food, this is next-level. Fresh, hot, and way better than most BBQ joints I've tried. I pulled in thinking I'd grab a quick fill up and maybe a sad bag of chips. Rookie mistake. This place is the size of a small country. You don't "stop" at Buc-ee's. You commit to it. First off, the pumps. There are so many pumps you start wondering if they're preparing for the apocalypse. No waiting, no nonsense, just pull up and go. Then you walk inside and it hits you. This is not a convenience store. This is a full blown experience. It's like Walmart, a barbecue joint, and a souvenir shop had a very successful child. And then you hear it... "Fresh brisket on the board!" That's not an announcement. That's a call to action. The barbecue is legit. Not "good for a gas station" good. Just straight up good. The turkey sandwich is my go to, piled high and paired with those fresh cooked chips that disappear faster than your willpower. You walk in thinking snack. You walk out with a full meal and possibly a dessert you didn't plan on. Now let's talk about the walls. Not shelves. Walls. Wall of jerky. Wall of trail mix. Wall of fountain drinks. I'm always looking for something new to read on road trips and these racks are getting harder to find. I bought the science fiction novels Planet of the Damned by Harry Harrison and Solar Express by L. E. Modesitt Jr. along with some Stuckey's treats.

Do not recommend those, however the restrooms are very clean & tidy. And we have stopped two weeks in a row & they have been very clean & tidy both times. The outside is a very large green space. A parklike area with some very pretty pavilions dotted with picnic areas. Pets are not allowed in the pavilion/eating areas. There are some designated areas for pets, but not at the pavilions. It's also very minimalistic outside as well. There are some shady pine trees but no flowering shrubs, flowerbeds etc., very minimal shrubbery, plain, very simple borderline boring scenery, but very well maintained. The next exit/stop is "Evergreen" only 4 miles up the highway with tons of Fast food chains, restaurants, shopping etc., There is even a very cool fenced in pet area to walk your pets at the local Conecuh sausage factory up at the Evergreen exit, just FYI.
