I'm sure that the only reason you don't see more 5-star reviews for Yoga Vermont is because the…read morestudents are so blissed out from class that they don't have time for writing Yelp reviews. I've taken classes with both Scott and Kathy, who have quite different approaches to but equally deep knowledge of Ashtanga yoga. Kathy is very chatty and very hands-on (with those who wish it), with plenty of compliments and suggestions for pose modifications for each of her students. Scott is a quieter sort, and while he frequently offers verbal amendments, doesn't do much hands-on assistance. Kathy seems more apt to encourage her students to modify a pose based on what they need, whereas Scott seems to encourage students to engage the pose as it was intended. (For example, I tend to brace my arm against my thigh during triangle: Kathy would encourage my use of triangle as a twist, wheres Scott recommended I instead brace my hand on my shin so I could reach higher with my other hand. Both totally correct approaches, it seems to me: just dependent on where you put your emphasis.) Whichever approach you prefer, you'll find excellent teaching at Yoga Vermont!

I can't say enough good things about this studio. Kathy is absolutely fantastic; she is my favorite…read moreof any Ashtanga instructor I've encountered. She's down to earth, fun, kind, and patient, and her knowledge of the practice is just incredible. The other Ashtangis were welcoming, too, and so inspiring :) I began working with intermediate series here last fall and my practice developed so quickly thanks to Kathy, Leo, and Scott. I broke my back in a snowboarding accident only a couple months after I discovered Yoga Vermont and I really missed practicing there --- if you are looking for a studio (albeit, Ashtanga isn't for everyone, but this isn't a review for that!), this is your place.

Where to I start. I like to get the uncomfortable out of the way so let's talk business. A single…read moreclass is fifteen dollars and that is very reasonable. Now let's talk spectacular! The introductory offer which I opted for, get this, thirty-nine dollars for one month unlimited yoga. Thats right $39.00. Unlimited. That is the best deal I have ever heard of for any yoga studio, and as you will see from my review this place is a spectacular yoga studio. So the deal is a steal. The regular rates are still outstanding in my opinion. The price break starts on the ten class card at $130 but in my opinion the best deal is the regular unlimited pass. For $79 you get unlimited in person and online classes. Two classes per week and you have a great deal. Three and is once again is a steal. There are numerous other options including an option which will allow you to assist LRY in reaching out to the less fortunate in our community. Since we are discussing business let's talk turkey. The website (often my least liked element of any business.) is well thought out and comprehensible even for a technophobe like me. The studio is well organized and I found the studio manager to be highly professional and approachable. She even had the aplomb to deal with me when I was upset about an issue, not LRY connected directly, and did so in a very proactive manner. Top notch business including a commitment to bringing yoga to persons who might not be able to afford or connect with the many benefits of yoga. I am fairly new to yoga but I have been to several studios. Other studios I have been to will remain unnamed because I don't want anyone to mistake this review as a criticism of them. The instruction at LRY is the best I have ever encountered. I have yet to find an instructor who is not well versed in every aspect of their particular yoga style. I will not name any of them because this would leave someone out, my memory being shady at best. On top of being obvious experts who take their craft seriously they also are multifaceted. They will bend over backwards to see you get the maximum physical emotional and spiritual benefits of yoga. If you are a beginner this studio is highly recommended for you! I would rank this studio as having top to top (no bottom here) the best instruction I have seen so far in my yoga journey. Laughing River Yoga is conveniently located in the historic Chace Mill and the studio is gorgeous. I love industrial space conversion and this fits that dynamic for me. The feel of the space is warm and inviting and one would think the prices much higher considering the luxurious space and design. I forgot to mention. During the limited duration warm weather season in Vermont you have access to classes offered at the gorgeous Burlington Surf Club location. Yoga in the midst of nature overlooking the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain, yes included in the price of the aforementioned monthly passes. Just as incredible as it sounds! In conclusion let me state three things. 1: Instruction, Instruction, Instruction. Without quality teachers a yoga studio is just a room to exercise in. 2: The prices are not just reasonable and it is impressive that they offer so much to the community and still not charge much more. I have paid $30 and up for classes that weren't nearly up to the standards of LRY. 3: The feeling of LRY if you will, is quite positive and uplifting. I have never left and felt I was let down, rather I always leave, often worn out, but buoyed by a sense of joy and presence that is most affirming and helps guide me in my blossoming yoga journey. Peace Jim

I love Laughing River Yoga. I'm especially a huge fan of Emily Garrett, one of the founders…read more I started seeing Emily for one-on-one yoga lessons when I was going through a particularly hard time of my life. I started these lessons thinking I was taking physical exercise classes that would help me strengthen and work around some rather bad injuries I'd sustained in an accident. Instead, Emily opened up a new world to me by subtly and slowly introducing me to things like mindfulness and being present. Yes, we practiced yoga postures, but it was through becoming aware of my thoughts, repetitive patterns, old habits, while taking on these postures that I began to slowly experience change. Emily is kind, patient, caring and steady. She's such a great teacher because she herself went through her own period of inner growth and self awareness (as I'm sure she'd say she and all of us are going through every day of our lives) and wants to share what she's learned with others. Every yoga teacher is on a journey. I know several in the Burlington area. It seems like one in five people you meet up here are certified. If I had to choose just one to practice with it would be Emily. She's not trying to prove anything. Yoga is more to her than a set of difficult physical postures or achieving inhuman flexibility. Relative to most yoga instructors she is wise beyond her years, balanced and aware. I think she's fabulous. I'm writing this review because I love Laughing River Yoga and Emily Garrett, but also because I saw a one star review by a woman that said some rather uncharitable things. She was visiting from out of town and went to the studio once. It's possible that she had a bad experience. We all have bad days, off days. No one is perfect. But I know with complete certainty that yoga and the Laughing River practice is extremely important to Emily and her staff and I would recommend them whole heartedly. There are several yoga studios in the Burlington area. Visit them and decide which one is right for you. I'm not practicing yoga currently, but if I were, I would go to Laughing River and practice with Emily Garrett whenever possible.

Not one of the best yoga studios I have been to. I take late evening classes because of my work…read moreschedule, and most yoga instructors I have encountered are inexperienced and sometimes unprofessional. For example, the instructor greats the entire class at the end of the practice and ignores me, or ask some yogis what poses they like to do in the beginning of the class and ignores the rest of the class. Some unprofessional stuff like that which makes the place not the best to release the stresses after long day at work. Poses are very basic and not challenging even though it is not a beginner class. It seems like the instructors are there just for the money and can't wait to leave the studio, too much negative energy. The mats can be terribly smelly as well, so you better bring your own mat. The location is okay but it can get noisy from the traffic in College St. and the fire station.

She made it very obvious that she had no interest in talking with me about yoga by avoiding eye contact and keeping her back turned towards me. I was totally shocked. I've never been treated like that in a yoga studio before. The yoga: Her sequencing was OK, but her cuing and assisting made the class inaccessible. Most of her assists felt micro-managy and pokey, and her cuing made no sense. As a student, I didn't feel successful. She spent a lot of time with her back to the class. She didn't smile. She did a lot of muttering in sanskrit and it would make the class more accessible if she just ditched the dogma.

I struggle, a real, true struggle, but the instructors and clients keep you going and encourage you to return to your mat. Sometimes I have to skip a posture (or maybe more) and there is no judgement, no ridicule; I really appreciate that I'm not being held to a standard or expectation, that I can come and be me and do what I am able. While I certainly spent my first few visits looking around thinking 'dang, how the hell... ummm my body can't twist like that' I quickly learned that everything comes with time and that letting your body move at it's own pace will yield truly amazing results. Lowering my expectation for instant results and just being in the moment has really been rewarding for my mind and body. I honestly feel like I might die every time I go, but lo and behold, I'm still standing and even better, I'm improving. I can see and I can feel it. The most notable thing about Queen City Bikram is truly how welcoming they are. The yoga world can be intimidating (yes, weird I know) and I have had a hefty handful of snobbery in my attempts to incorporate yoga into my ever-developing healthy lifestyle. I assure that if you have had similar experience, but long to put something new into your fitness mix that you should give Queen City Bikram a try. They have an awesome deal for new students $30 for 30 days and it is a great way for you to give it a try without investing a whole lot into it right off the bat. The studio is awesome, clean with a simplistic style. They have showers and a changing room that are available to use. You can also rent a mat if you forget, or don't have one. They offer a number of classes with at least one everyday, which makes it easy to work around a busy schedule. Also, once a month they do a black light class with a dj, I haven't made it to one yet, but it sure sounds like a blast! Need more encouragement? Check out their website, when I was gonna bail the website encouraged me to show up and gave me a burst of acceptance before I even walked in the door. Everyone has their first day... maybe it's your turn?
