First of all Theres a great atmosphere in the shop; Motown playing, the girls chatty and friendly and a nice selection of pasta and hot/cold sandwiches. A very small little kitchen with a counter it is on unlucky times brim to overflowing with folk desperate to eat one of them. By them of course I mean the sandwiches. It doesn't matter what you have its all made with look and affection. But if you really want something that fell from heaven there is one award winning bad boy the milano. On a granary bap it is filled with...... prepare yourself chicken, bacon, pesto, parmesan, mayonnaise and salad (this you can pick from the buckets of iceberg and sweetcorn bits etc). This is the single greatest sandwich I've ever eaten. The only time I don't have one is when the hour dictates its breakfast then I have a breakfast bin lid (a huge bap stuffed full of a big breakfast).

It represents true value for money and is much better than the university canteen and Subway. There are a number of sandwich fillings you can have and all sandwiches are made to order. Everything from a salad bap to a sausage and bacon sarnie. Price wise it's cheaper than competitors but the only down side is that it is take away only. It's only down the road from Hanley Park so if it's a nice day, venture there to enjoy a lunchtime snack.

But all this specialness doesn't come cheap, with sandwiches beginning around the £4 mark it is maybe okay just for once or if your feeling crazy twice a week. If you're going to pick a sandwich chain, Philpotts is a great bet. They're based in Chester which in my book makes them entirely Mancunian... well not quite but they're at least Greater Mancunian, and it's a small chain. This Brazennose Street offering (remember how much I like Brazennose Street, remember, and not just because of its strange name) has everything you could want in store, from grab and go sandwiches to gourmet soups, cakes and puddings to piping hot coffee, and, well, wouldn't you know it, sandwiches made to order. Just exactly what you fancy. I find this confusing as I'm rubbish with a large variety of choice, but I know that you real proper people will find that just stunning. I myself prefer to take a template and add some of my own accessories. I need at least a base sandwich to start with. Just like with pizza. But the BF is the exact opposite and relishes in 'making his own', so this is perfect for those types. As you'd imagine the office crowd love this place at lunchtime so get there early to avoid disappointment. Plus there are all sorts of seasonal specials, with three exclusive offers to choose from each day. Philpotts also provide catering and business lunches with sandwich platters and made to order items. As chains go, this is certainly a superb choice. Praise be to Philpotts.

Situated half-way between Fallowfield and Burnage next to only two other shops, the famous Battered Cod fish and chips and Fallowfield Mini Market (see the yelps for details), they always seem to be short of custom. This is a shame because if this shop was located in town, near the university or even in Fallowfield central, I' sure it would do a roaring trade. Basically it's a subway style make your own sandwich shop but all the ingredients are fresh and there is no horrible smell emanating from the premises. Everything you could want in a sandwich from chicken to salad. Cheap. Nice.

First off, the lovely people that run the shop always greet you with a smile, which as we all know is very important. And they serve everybody quickly and efficiently no matter how chaotic it gets. But you can ring ahead to have food ready for you when you get there (very handy for those dirty Fat Friday sandwiches!) and I'm pretty sure they do food for offices and functions etc (but don't quote me on that!). Most importantly though, the sandwiches are bloody lovely! The breakfast butties are cracking - I go for a sausage, bacon and black pudding butty with ketchup. The meat in that is great, but the black pudding is just perfect! And the lunch sandwiches are just as good. There's loads of fillings, hot and cold, and there's plenty of salad options that you get at no extra cost. My personal fave is the chinese chicken, which is nice and creamy! But they also do things like salad boxes, paninis, wraps and a cracking selection of cakey things like flapjacks and chocolate brownies. As you can probably gather, I love this place! The people are lovely and the food is amazing and reasonably priced. Get on it!! Oh and check out the picture of the Festive Feast sandwich! It's turkey, stuffing, sausage, bacon, lettuce, cranberry sauce and mayo, and it's absolutely huge!!

Also paninis, jacket potatoes, salad boxes, soup of the day and a couple of specials which were cheeseburger and also chilli and rice. Cans of pop and a chocolate bar or two rounds off the menu. The batons are really quite big and generously filled and could easily be shared between two really, very tasty too. Although the shop itself doesn't look all that promising from the outside I'd recommend giving it a try. Update: upgraded my review from 4 stars to 5 stars after several visits. Friendly staff, excellent sandwiches. Highly recommended!

The best Patissier and Chocolatier in North Manchester…read more Any time I drive into Manchester (which is very often) I have to drive past Slattery's and always manage to make some excuse to pop in. I shouldn't have to make an excuse to go here - It's excellent. The ground floor is their outstanding chocolate and cake shop - definitely worth spending some time here tasting and choosing what they have on offer. Their selection of over 40 celebration cakes on display are stunning - you'll find yourself staring at them like some sort of art. A few of the wedding cakes are pushing £1,000.. asking if it would be worth it? For me, yes! Their cakes are amazing - no wonder Wayne Rooney bought his wedding cake from here and had it shipped to Italy. You'll find me with my face pressed up against the viewing window where you can watch the cake decorators working hard to perfect these masterpieces *drool* I'm certainly not planning my wedding or anything but I already know that there's a massive possibility that my cake will be from here. On the first floor is an elegant restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and of course CAKE. The menu is fab and I haven't heard anybody mention a bad word about it. I have yet to visit the restaurant and I hear that unless you book weeks in advance you've no chance of getting in, but this only makes me want to try it even more and it is certainly on my list. In the past I have bought baskets from here and made my own hampers, mainly for family or friends at Christmas time - consisting of chocolates, hand make cakes, biscuits, marmalades, wines etc (all locally sourced). Safe to say these always go down well. If you have a sweet tooth, this is somewhere you should definitely visit.
