This celebration beat the one in NYC, hands down. Wylie, the Walleye, was born in 1997 and made of simply paper mache. They have sinced upgraded. Port Clinton is the "Walleye Capital of the World," so it is only fitting that they drop a colorful LED lit, 20-foot, 600-pound walleye, named Wylie Jr., from the sky at the stroke of midnight, with a spectacular FIREWORKS show soon thereafter. As mentioned, the event is free and kicks off with a kids party from 4p to 6p, kids walleye drop at 6p, games and the "touch a truck" event, where kids can see public safety vehicles. They also have a raffle with a chance to win some cool prizes. And for those 21 and up, they have a "Bar Swim" that features heated charter buses that take you to bars around town. Keep in mind that this event occurs off season so a few places in the town my be closed for the season. A few restaurants that I eyed fell in that category. If you are just going to watch the Walleye Drop then I recommend getting there around 11PM. It gets very cold out there and there is no need to freeze for an extended period. We ended up getting there around 9PM and eating/drinking at one of the restaurants/bars across the street. They also have some food trucks there if you want to go that route. The popcorn store is open through the night to satisfy your popcorn fix. A DJ is jamming the night away with the hottest tunes. He was playing when we arrived there at 9. After we ate, we took on the cold and danced like it was 1999. They have a guy that was selling blinky things, but I recommend bringing your own NYE garb if you want a wider selection. We were fortunate enough that we did not have to drive there. Our hotel had a complimentary shuttle that dropped off and picked up party goers. If you are staying at hotel you may want to check if they offer a shuttle. This Walleye is awesome. It is great family fun. definitely a bucket list must do. So, remember dress warm. It gets very cold out there and plan your arrival with the cold in mind. You may also want to plan your parking if you are driving. They shut down some of the road when the party ends about 1210.

However, I should have just walked away when I found out that they don't store their fireworks in the store, but instead out in connex trailers outside. 3 of the 4 large soldier parachute fireworks I bought did not open at all. They shot the tube up in the air and nothing happened. The third one did open up, though it only went up about 50 feet in the air. Not what I would expect for an almost $40 firework (though only $20 with 50% off). Three of the four smoke bombs I bought worked for about 10 seconds and then just turned into a jet a flame and no smoke. I also purchased two large strobe rockets, a 60 shot box and a fountain (night time). When I was unpacking the fireworks, I noticed that the fountain's top foil was missing! No returns/refunds per the store. Highly disappointed (as this store is very close to where I live). I'm very glad that I spent the lion's share of my $1,200 fireworks budget at Phantom Fireworks instead of this store. Do NOT buy from any store where the fireworks are not kept in a climate controlled space. Heat and humidity are not good for any firework being stored.

Other "boomers" turn out to be the same - just firecrackers wrapped up in a bigger tube. If you aren't spending thousands of dollars - and even if you are - this place leaves you wanting more bang for your buck.
