We stayed in one of the eco tents, a very sturdy structure that kept plenty warm in a chilly night with the plug in heater. The beds were the most comfortable in our entire stay through Australia. The tent included everything promised and was very clean. The location on a hillside ay treetop level was great; expect to be woken by the variety of noisy birds. Very friendly host as well.

Lorne, just down the Great Ocean Road from Cumberland River, gets a hell of a lot of attention…read moregiven its awesome location and scenery. But I am sure it also packs out in peak season and for that reason, I recommend travelling a little further to arrive at Cumberland River Holiday Park. The park is situated on a rare bit of flat ground along the mountainous coastal drive, situated next to a beautiful running river and impressive cliffs overhead. Other than the park goers there are no other neighbours apart from the wildlife that inhabits the river, the forest and the ocean. We were greeted by lovely management and as it was the middle of winter we rented a cabin rather than rolling out the swag. The cabin was clean, simple yet functional. There is a gas log fire indoors, an outdoor fire pit and good cooking and bathroom facilities. Due to the remote location, electricity is limited and there was only one powerpoint in the cabin. Definitely stop in here for a few nights to take in majestic scenery, stunning river walks and breathtaking ocean views.

They have a lot of options for camping including cabins, caravan sites, powered campsites an bush camp sites. We stayed in the bush camp where spots weren't designated, you just find a cleared place to set up your tent in the bush. There were a lot of trees so we were protected from the wind. Best thing was having our own camp fire to sit around! They have a pizza night on Saturdays and provide dough and toppings! They do horse back riding tours for only $50/hr, glow worm tours $8/pp and have a lot of walking trails to choose from. They even have a rock climbing apparatus. One of those tall towers.... Not climbing on real rocks as I initially thought. Informative and friendly staff too! The showers are beautiful and you pay $1/3min. Great kitchen facilities and tv room where a lot of young kids were watching cartoons. This place is so family friendly. There were kids and families everywhere riding their bikes, sitting around giant Bon fires and having a Wonderful time. It's about an hour drive to the 12 apostles and 20 minutes away from Apollo bay. (Get your coffee here!) Whatever you do don't miss the turn off! We did! We lost phone reception and missed seeing the 1 sign that said turn left in 300m. We drove for 25 minutes before we got reception again and had to turn around!!! Add that to time spent driving from melbourne! Maybe keep a map in the car when traveling; I plan to!

The location was very convenient for seeing the fraudulently-named 12 Apostles, especially if you want to be there at dawn. The cabin was chilly, as the entire continent of Australia and every establishment in it seem to be right now. But the heaters in the bedrooms and the heating pads on the beds worked great and that just made everything cozier. There was plenty of hot water. I thought it might run out, but it never did! The towels were clean and didn't have that mildewy smell that I'd been starting to think was endemic in this hemisphere. Could everything have been a bit newer and less worn down? Sure, but it seems like everything is always just a little bit shabbier than you expect when you're traveling, especially after COVID. It was clean and quiet, and the location was great, and that's what matters most. Be careful on the road in and out. It tends to be overrun with kangaroos at dawn and dusk. They are easily startled, and their preferred method of escape is to dive directly under your front tires.

For some reason,…read moremy better half thought we'd have an ocean view but that wasn't reasonable to expect at the price... The room was clean, the bed was comfy. It was fine. Basic. However, we do have a nice story. The manager said she'd been training up a new staff who'd accidentally charged our credit card twice. Although the charge was immediately reversed, she gave us a bottle of red wine to apologise. I really think this is a nice example of customer service: both friendly and professional, and I wish the managers/owners (who seem to be new) success.

While there isn't really anything else in the area, the motel is only a few minutes drive from Apollo Bay, and perhaps better value for money for that reason. We managed to get the last ocean view room, and you really do get a spectacular view of the beach, obstructed only by your own car parked out front. Our room was extremely modest and could have used some TLC (okay, a lot of TLC), but it was clean, and the Sharp convection microwave oven from my childhood worked like a dream (and the faux wood finish minibar fridge brought back a memory or two as well). The staff were extremely genuine and friendly and made some great recommendations about attractions in the area as we headed west. We didn't eat there, but they do have a cafe or restaurant or something. In all, I would have been happier if the price hadn't had everything to do with the view and more to do with the condition of the room or in-room amenities, like enough hot water for two people, or walls that aren't painted cinder blocks, for example. If you can't get a room with an ocean view or for cheap, I say don't bother.
