My wife and I went to Sandos for our second-year anniversary and were attracted because of the cheap price and good reviews. Plus they upgraded us to a Signature Elite package for free! Still, we saw firsthand the disparity between a higher-class resort and Sandos Playacar.
FOOD (2 stars): This was by far our biggest complaint. The food at Sandos is awful. I never expect buffet food to be stellar but Sandos really made no effort to offer even marginally-good tasting food. They boast of different kinds of buffets -- Italian, International, Asian, and Mexican -- but in reality, all the buffets offer the exact same bland food, save for a single stereotypical offering depending on the nationality. Room service meals are an absolute atrocity. Even the restaurants don't offer anything I can't make at home rather easily. The only restaurant worth going to is the one located in the Elite area for those wearing black wristbands. Breakfast and lunch are restricted to the Elite, but dinner is open to everyone (although there may be a wait). This restaurant was excellent. It's true fine dining. I'd skip everything else and eat there each night you stay at the resort. Something else to bear in mind: the alcohol is underwhelming. One of the people trying to sell us timeshares admitted that they water down the alcohol in the non-Elite areas and save the best alcohol for the Elites. We could readily taste a lack of alcohol in our drinks. Disappointing.
AMENITIES (5 stars): Although it rained every day, I appreciated that Sandos offered lots to do in the resort without having to go on excursions and be hustled by the local citizens. There is snorkeling, lake swimming, the beach, pool tables, a water park, a great gym, bike riding, and much more I'm probably forgetting. We didn't leave the resort once to find something we couldn't reasonably access at Sandos. And I don't know if this is because it was the first day of summer and it's a Mexican tradition or not, but on a Wednesday, Sandos brought in and lined the streets with really cool street performers and street food. The performers performed, vendors sold keepsakes, and food stands gave away free food. That was the brilliant highlight of the trip. One minor gripe: the wifi was trash. It was so spotty, often flat-out failed, and mostly disappointed.
STAFF (5 stars): The staff at Sandos is top-notch. They seem exceedingly friendly, humble, and eager to help. Our room service was very prompt and accommodating. The bartenders were excellent. The front desk was very kind and offered assistance when they noticed we looked lost and out of place.
MOOD (1 star): When you're on vacation, I'd imagine you want everything to be as eye-pleasing as possible. Sandos will let you down in this regard. First off, it's the oldest of the Sandos resorts across the Caribbean, and it glaringly shows: several roofs were leaking in various restaurants at random times, the room we stayed in was pretty outdated, the structures of the buildings weren't especially nice to look at, and although Sandos Playacar tries to pass itself off as an eco-friendly resort that caters to wildlife, the truth is they have a rodent problem and unable to fix it, they've accepted it and use it as part of the supposed appeal. Some may find it cute that stray cats lounge in restaurants, or that mosquitoes are present and feeding on you every minute of every day, or that raccoons walk up to outside restaurants and beg for food, or that hairless dogs snarl at guests, or other rodents native to Mexico can be seen in plain sight fighting and running around the resort. I however found it repulsive. When I'm in paradise, I don't want to see wild animals interfering with my vacation. Also, because this was a low-priced vacation, it attracted some less-than-desirable people. We actually could hear very loud arguing, cursing, and a fistfight one of the nights right outside our bedroom window at 3am by some trashy drunks. And sure, this is a kid-friendly resort, but annoying children were EVERYWHERE. If you're going to vacation to enjoy yourself with a spouse, you definitely want to avoid this one due to the preponderance of unruly minors.
VERDICT: If you're ballin' on a budget, you'll probably love Sandos Playacar. If you're traveling with friends, family, or as a couple who doesn't mind children, you'll have a good time. If you expect a luxury resort and everything that comes along with that, you'll be sorely let down. Either way, I had a decent time and you will too! I just wouldn't come back personally. read more
