I remember my Grandfather telling me that when he arrived in Brisbane around 60 years ago this was…read morethe tallest building in the city...which as a kid and even now amazed me as almost all of the giant structures in its vicinity dwarf it considerably. Its one of those buildings that you just have to check out if you get the chance as there aren't too many of them left. Buildings like City Hall offer us a beautiful look into this city's past, showing us the architecture of the time and how far we have come, allowing us to imagine how things were when our parents or grandparents saw them with their own eyes. I was fortunate enough to take a good look around the inside of this place before they started the restoration/renovations a few years ago and I remember telling myself 'wow, this is breathtaking, I want to live here, move out council officials I'm moving in!' - Unfortunately that didn't happen...but my attempts at staying there for an extended period one day went quite well until my friends and I were kicked out...No I am not a squatter although I suppose you could label what we were doing as that...We had decided one day to get into the lift, take it to the top of the clock tower and see how long we could stay up there without being asked to leave. You see the view from up there although obstructed by the architectural monstrosities of today is still worth the trip. I hope they will allow the public to go up into the tower once more as last I heard they restricted access long ago (maybe the restorations will change that). I cant wait to see what they have done with the place!

After a recent falling out with my local child care centre, I needed to find another centre - stat!…read more I needed a centre close to my home, but most importantly a centre that was professional and fun! All of the children here seem pretty happy, and the staff are extremely professional and very friendly. The centre is clean, air-conditioned and they have great facilities including an outdoor, undercover playground and a sandpit! My daughter who is 2 has been attending this centre now for four weeks (3 days a week) and I couldn't be happier. If you are looking for a great child care centre on the Northside make sure you drop into Goodstart Learning on the Boulevard.

Lucked out and had a solid window of no rain and sunny skies on the afternoon I did my tour. Plus we were in the tower when the bells rang. Guide was friendly and informative.

Cox Park in Lota is home to the Wynnum Manly Netball Association and its member clubs. It's a hive…read moreof activity on winter Saturdays, when the clubs play their fixtures. There'll be older players on the hardcourts, younger ones on the grass courts and teeny ones learning pre-game skills from the dedicated association members. Each of the clubs has a membership drive early in the year and the association will try to get as many teams together for each club as possible, to ensure a robust season. Fees apply to join the association and a club but hopefully they aren't prohibitive for anyone who really wants to play. The older teams play in the evenings at different venues to get more competition. It's a good way for kids to have fun and get fit.

Union College has to be the closest university housing to the University of Queensland St Lucia…read morecampus. It is also a fairly relaxed college, with less O-Week hazing and activities than some of the others around. Union is nice and close to classes, backing onto a sporting field (Wep Harris Oval) as well. It is leafy around but the buildings still have that grey student accommodation feeling to them. On the plus side, there is a pretty good gym and games room in the college. It is also co-education so boys and girls can play together. The rooms are pretty average in size, just fitting the single bed, small desk, chair, cupboard and drawers. Each room also has a fan and heater if I remember correctly. Union is great if you are looking for some pretty independent, convenient, no frills uni accommodation.

Darra train station was one of the closest train stations to where I lived and I used to have to…read morecatch it to go to Uni. I never enjoyed catching the train from Darra because the area used to scare me a bit. It just looked a bit... dodgy. However, I never ever felt unsafe. The train station just looked like it was in desperate need for TLC. I moved to the UK for two years and when I came back, I went to the train station and saw a massive improvement. It looked nothing like the old train station. It looked brand new, contemporary and safe. I love the fittings and design of the new station. They have added two more platforms for service Richlands and Springfield Lines. This station has become very important for commuters in the Western suburbs and now with its brand new looks and design, it has surely attracted commuters back to the train.

Open The 1st Friday of the month 4pm to 8:30pm…read more The Markets at Hawthorne Park started a year ago. I went to one of the first ones which were held on Sunday mornings. I wasn't that impressed at the time -- very few stalls, it was too hot to be out at that time.... But now they have moved it to the first Friday of the month in the evening. They have brought in more vendors and entertainment. It is a vast improvement from its humble beginnings. I think the move to Fridays was smart, as the temperatures are more tolerated, and everyone wants to go do something that is family friendly and community friendly to start off the weekend. The night I went, I was pleased the Markets attracted the few of Brisbane's food trucks including Juan More Taco, That BBQ Joint!, Pasta Cruiser. There are also other food vendors available (The Goat Pie guy made an appearance here - we plan on having him bring a couple GF pies for us at the next Market). Good night entertainment for all, including kid activities such as girls getting their hair curled, bounce house, "mini makers" corner. There's even Yoga for anyone! I look forward to taking my folks here very soon, to show how awesome our community is!
