That's saying a lot, since this is a tiny little museum. It is in a very nice modern building. But, the layout makes you feel like you're in a refurbished old house. It might just be me. Because it is so small, you feel like you need to read every little placard there is. Each one of them had something really interesting to add to our understanding of the island. I really enjoyed the posters with the Port Aransas timeline. I had no idea that Port Aransas was so recent in the scheme of Texas development. My favorite thing that I learned was that when the Civil War broke out, everyone deserted the island. How cool is that! I also liked reading about the hurricanes that ripped up the island and the special breed of people who made and make their homes there. If you're into fishing, you will love the display of fishing rods and fishing lures. They are displayed in one room very nicely. Bottom line... don't miss this museum. It is definitely worth your while.

If you go when it's hot, bring water. Mosquito repellent is also a good idea but if you forget it, it's sold in the visitor center. When you pay for admission, you get an arm band and a crude map. We wished the map was better. At least one part of a pathway was under construction, so we ended up cutting through the playground to get back. While called a botanical garden, this place is equally good for seeing birds, insects, reptiles, and other animals. Admission is very reasonable, so it's a great place to bring the kids. In the visitor center there are small caged reptiles. If there's an attendant, you might be able to pet a lizard. A blue-tongued skink was out while we were there. There are other animals in large outdoor cages, including several beautiful macaws and lizards. There is a winding path that takes you to a variety of areas on the property. Some areas, like orchids and butterflies, are within enclosures while most things you'll see are out in the open. Along the path there are a couple of elevated observation decks and lots of descriptive signage. There is an unshaded play area. There are several purple martin houses, which are fun to watch. We had hoped to see some hummingbirds in the gardens, as there was a hummingbird area with feeders and flowers they generally like, but the heat was perhaps too stifling. All in all, we found this to be a great place to visit, weather permitting. If you happen to be a member at another AHS garden, you can get in free.

Every town needs a community theater like this one. It is fun, very organized, and has a friendly…read moregroup of volunteers. We were present for the opening night of the Texas state-wide premier for "Grumpy Old Men." The cast was lively, and were having fun on stage. Whoever cast Emily Regier as "Grandpa" probably took a chance, but it was genius. Doors opened 30 minutes prior to the beginning, which is plenty of time to find a seat. I suggest the seats on the risers. Not only can you see over the heads of those in front of you, these seats have arm rests with drink holders. However, the stage is high enough that every seat in the house is probably great. Concessions are reasonably priced. Restrooms are small, but there was never a long line at intermission. My only reason for not giving them all 5-stars was because the company needs a vocal coach. Most of the singers could use some help learning to sing on-key. Fun evening! We would definitely return.
