I communicated with Jo by e-mail before I left the US and she was very kind and my apprehension. She set up my classes ahead of time. When I arrived, I had yoga the first day. Joanne led the class. She had a bag ready for me with materials I needed and led us through the Vinyasa class - barely intimidating at all. She explained as we went and I felt wonderful afterwards. The next day we started with meditation at 6:45 am on the roof. It was peaceful, quiet, contemplative and wonderful. Later another yoga class and then I was off to the rest of my day. I know many of her classes and instructors are more challenging, but for a beginner like me, this was a great place to try it out. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

I don't normally care too much about ambiance, but with the bougainvillea hanging overhead and the sunlight peaking through the leaves.... The thing that made Sonido del Mar most memorable was the least very energy/vibe or whatever you want to call it. Having a slow breakfast near the bar allowed me a view into the way the staff treat each other. We came here for breakfast 3 times during our trip, and each time, the staff greated each other sweetly; showed care and respect for each other, and you could feel the good energy throughout the cafe. We ordered coffee all 3 days we went there. Each day, it was made a little differently, each time delicious and made with love. There is no standardization here. This is not starbucks. It is not formulaic; it is homemade. All of the food we ordered was excellent. Perfectly cooked eggs, delicious chilaquiles, fantastic habanero salsa, the tastiest quesadilla. Truly, good food. Everytime I left the restaurant feeling fantastic.

Without making any paper waste, my Spanish was quadrupled in just 3 weeks. The classes are small, outrageously fun and conversational. I took advantage of the free yoga every morning, the evening culture classes, the weekend optional excursions and most importantly the host family living arrangements. It was, hands down, the most valuable part of the experience. The host family lived near and gave me a bicycle for the duration of my stay. The hosts were warm, welcoming, accommodating and made Mexican food from scratch every single day. My vocabulary blossomed during these family meals, where the human experience is so universal, you take part in these conversations and next thing you know, you're fluent. Cannot speak highly enough of the Meztli School for putting this all together.

All I can say is, IT WAS THE BEST DECISION EVER! I stayed for a month--which means I had EVERY teacher there is at Meztli. Every single teacher there genuinely wants to be there, which is probably the most important part of it: they love it, and they love the students. Secondly, their methods are so effective. One of my favorite things is that they rotate your teachers (one teacher for grammar; then after break, a new teacher for conversation). You don't get used to one way of speaking or teaching, and it keeps you on your toes. I also did 2 hours of private classes after group classes, with two different teachers all 4 weeks. Staying with a host family was a dream for me, and I know i'll be in touch with them for years to come. The way the school is directed and run is so thoughtful. Sara, the director, truly cares for every students happiness and safety and experience overall. The outings are so fun, and EXTREMELY reasonably priced. and by the way, yoga is a huge benefit. it's taught so well, and it taught me verb tenses, directions, and body parts in no time.
