I couldn't have asked for anything better! Coming from working in the veterinary field and being a frequent trail rider growing up I was a bit hesitant wether I still had it in me or not I was expecting a plain flat riding trail the trail Christina and AK rode with me on was more than I imagined, tucked into rocky mountain sides and ravines the views were spectacular the weather was beyond perfect! Christina got the horses running through certain areas, my muscle memory reconnected with my past and my riding skills were pushed to the limit, it was a blast all around! Christina and AK were such a pleasure to meet very friendly and knowledgeable people the animals were well taken cared of I can't say enough good things about my time spent riding here I will definitely be coming back to ride again :)

Best horse trail riding I've ever done and absolutely will do again ! I am staying near downtown San Diego from there it's an 40 minute drive to the ranch so totally doable. Driving through the valley is where the journey start it's so beautiful! The horses are looking amazing and the love they have for them is something I loved to see ! I am an expert rider from the Netherlands so I was looking for something what is hard to find.. a personal and challenging trail ride. And it was more than that. There was time for ejoying the view but we did trot and canter through the mountains too. I was the only one going so no other group of people what made it personal I loved that ! Thank you so much I hope to see you soon !

After a quick 1-hour drive from San Diego, we were greeted with a warm welcome from Cynthia! Crystal and John were our wranglers/tour guides and they made a fantastic team attending to our private two-person ride. They matched us up with the perfect horses and we were off on a two-hour trail ride through hills covered with low brush (California sage, chaparral, yucca, manzanita, yellow mustard + more!) and a few oak trees. Our route covered a surprising variety of terrain including rolling ups and downs, a stone staircase, a county road, a huge puddle to wade through and a bridge! The horses were sure-footed, responsive and well-cared for. Crystal and John's leadership and communication on the trail let us relax and have a great time!! We are excited to return for another adventure!!

Loved our experience! It's a great couples experience and I felt very safe and comfortable. I've been riding my whole life, my squeeze? Not so much. They made him feel confident and he did great!

Thanks Christina and Armando for two amazing trips! I have been twice and I will be back! The first trip was a girls trip, we sat by the bon fire, went to Griffin Ranch and got to know the animals! The second was a romantic trip with my husband, We went on a 1 1/2 hr trail ride and a 3 hr trail ride, it was amazing! There is so much to see and do and I sept like a baby! I came home wanting to go back for more!

What an amazing experience, we had an amazing time horseback riding. We come each year, we stay at our timeshare The Good Life, they referred me to Adventures on Horseback. I am so pleased they referred me to Debby she is amazing and so kind. We were scheduled for a 12:30pm ride but we were running late from traveling from Los Angeles. She was so accommodating to us and made us feel welcomed even though we were late. The riding time was great, the trail was nice and the time you get riding with your horse is very reasonable for the price of the ride. We will definitely being riding again next year and are looking forward to ride again.

You can't see my face but I'm smiling because it was so much fun!

Best horse trail ride ever!! My boyfriend and I stayed at an airbnb located on the same property and we got to walk over to the horse stables for a Sunday morning ride. My bf wasn't feeling too keen on horse riding (he prefers to MTB) and Christina our guide offered for him to ride along with us on his bike so he did. Christina was really great throughout the entire experience. She was able to guide me on the horse while also guiding my bf on his bike. I am a novice level rider and had not ridden a horse in a while, so was a bit nervous but Christina provided instruction on basic maneuvering of the horse which made me feel more comfortable. We rode up and down trails, and even rode the trail equivalent of a 'roller coaster' and did some trotting and some cantering at various segments of the ride. This was my first time ever experiencing cantering and it was truly exhilarating. We will definitely be returning for another ride. I also got to brush my horse, Foxy, and feed her treats which was a real treat for me. I loved everything about this experience. In case you are wondering about social distancing measures.. We made sure to bring and wear our face masks and adhere to social distancing rules to keep everyone safe. They have disinfecting wipes on site and actually wipe down the saddle once its strapped in. Once on the horses, you're pretty much always 6 feet or more apart. Social distancing can be practiced while horse trail riding but needless to say if you are sick then obviously you should stay home.

My wife, our four horses, and I have been clients of Len Judd for 6 years now, and we have followed him to the Horse of the Sun Ranch and Distinction Training. We make a 3 hour round trip drive to have Len help us with starting our new colts. We have watched the physical improvements to the facility under it's new ownership and it has come a long way with more to come. We have visited a number of times now, including a couple of 3-4 day stays on the property. We see a nothing less than quality care for the horses in residence. Len and Bethani are particularly keen on the quality of their feed even to the extent of concern for what our horses are fed back at home. These folks have nothing less than the greatest concern for the animals in their care. I've watched a small crew feed, water and muck all the pens on my every visit there. Horse of the Sun is now a training facility with training now exclusively from Len and Bethani, and not a general boarding facility. Len delivers such a depth of knowledge and new skills that we often find ourselves able to go months before we bring him our next challenge. Bethani has a great eye for what goes on with the rider and the horse and her observations have also been very helpful. We feel fortunate to have Len's experience with our first starting of young horses.

Would recommend to anyone (experienced horse person or not) and definitely plan on going back next time I'm in San Diego! While it is a little drive from San Diego (45 min - 1hr), the little town of Julian was the perfect place for us to stop afterwards for lunch before we made the drive back!

An outstanding "under the radar" waterfall hike is right here in Descanso. The Merigan Trail (aka…read morethe Merigan Fire Road) is closer than you think at just five minutes off the 8 freeway. Once at the trailhead, you will start your hike through an open meadow, passing some shady oak groves then finishing with waterfalls crashing on large boulders. I was introduced to this gem when I was at sixth grade camp, at Camp Oliver. I knew the Merigan Trail was great even then, but now I can truly appreciate how this area was left untouched after all these years. If it is your first time here, you will be back. FYI..there was still snow on the ground when we went in early January. There is no official address, but the place is right off Viejas Boulevard at Mitzpah Lane. Since it is part of the Cuyamaca State Park, they have their own signs, dirt parking lot, port-a-potties and the "honor system" check in station. I guess they ask for an 8 dollar fee to park. From the parking lot, walk to the trail head going left that passes right in front of a ranger's cabin. You can't miss the trail, since it is wide enough to drive a truck through. Stay on the trail and you will pass through a meadow, then an oak grove, this will then turn into a few mild inclines on the trail that will eventually lead you to a fork in the trail. At the fork, you will see a sign with the option to go to the "Dead Horse Trail" or stay on the "Merigan Fire Road." I always take the Dead Horse Trail, and go left at the fork in the trail to get to the waterfalls. The hike to the waterfall takes about 30-40 minutes for the average hiker with a few stops to admire the scenery. On a scale of 1-10 for difficulty, I would rate it at a 3. There are some inclines, but nothing too bad. Remember, my entire 6th grade class made the hike. Although I love Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain as much as the next hiker...those spots are flooded with way too many bodies. Just when you think you hear a coyote or deer up ahead, it always ends up being another hiker. Kind of a buzz kill. The Merigan Trail has always been the opposite of that experience for me.

It's pretty much just as the above review describes. Drive east on I-8 two exits past the Viejas outlets to Japatul rd and make a left. Make a left at hwy 79 and then an immediate left on Viejas Blvd. Look for Mitzpah rd and park in the dirt lot. Parking is $8. The hike to the waterfall is about 30 minutes. Take the fireroad and make a left at the fork down towards Dead Horse Trail. You will start to hear water. The falls aren't big and majestic, but it's quiet and uncrowded. We had 4 kids with us ranging from age 6 - 9 and they all had a good time.

It's still a great ride on these Magestic animals, couldn't be too disappointed because I truly wanted to jus ride. It's been so long, since I was a teen since I've been on a horse and my heart needed this. I've always wanted a stable full of horses, hey, a girl can dream. I'm so mad bc I cannot remember our trail guide but she has been working there only for eight months as of 4/18/26. She was the best and easy to talk too. We loved all the horses! I got to ride Ranger and he was so hungry during our trail ride. Had me thinking, do thy feed them lol but I just let him do his thing and she did as well. We all just let the horses eat and chill too while taking the trail ride. We wanted them to enjoy themselves too! My man rode Mega and he's huge! Also, he's their youngest horse and I cannot remember the name of the other horse but I did ask their ages. Many horses live around forty years and Mega was seven, Ranger was 15 and the horse guiding us was 20. It was such a nice day to ride. Don't come here having to use the bathroom lol. My one complaint about the trail is their lack of cleaning it! There was a toilet that has been there on the trail a while, I'm not sure if someone dumped some fish eggs on the trail, there was a little patch that they need to clean asap! They're probably just use to it and might not notice but there and lots of flies over it and I'm not sure why someone wouldn't want to take pride in the trail. I'm hoping this review will help them get there. There are so many things to make this experience even more beautiful and memorable. Thanks for the ride!
