Hi, I've been…read moreenjoying TSJ since the mid-90's when I looked forward each month to going to Tower Records (9th Floor) in downtown Shibuya-Tokyo, Japan. When I returned to NorCal in 2000 I subscribed and have continued to look forward to receiving the journal. Unfortunately I've noticed a shift in TSJ's format that really, in my 68 year-old opinion isn't to the quality/standard that I've always enjoyed. The content and photo's for the most part are excellent but the layout and design format is really a let down from what it's been, especially the last 4 editions. Here are my concerns: 1. I know your change may be to appeal to a younger audience but there are still a lot of old guys like me that look and read your magazine and even with my progressive glasses switching fonts to a smaller size does not work for older eyes. 2. Why the "cut and paste" layout, it's not clean and the captions in the little boxes is tacky! 3. Why blank or almost blank pages? 4. The cover used to be classic, now it looks like the interior.....not a lot of effort. 5. As an artist aesthetics's is important to me, don't lose the fine art section (missing in the last issue). I have enjoyed catching fish particularly in the ocean since my preteen years, worked on Sportfishing boats in Long Beach, San Pedro and San Diego. Hunting in California has gotten far too expensive for this old veteran attempting to exist on SS alone.My favorite way to keep abreast of what going in the California Fishing and hunting world is in the pages of WON News! A home town paper that get's it done delivered weekly for free! RIGHT ON!…read more So they wouldn't be rated a 4, except that "FREE" knocked em up 1 star. That's fair, right? So expect a ton of real estate ads (they've gotta pay for your free paper), and I wish they had more restaurant discounts. Beyond that, here's the skinny on the different sections. DELIVERED WEEKLY for FREE (Rating 5) WHAT'S UP WITH section (Rating 4) This is the first section in the paper on the first interior (right) page. I like this section allot. It's well written and keeps me up to date on what's happening locally with local development, ongoing projects (like the 5 frwy, uhhhh) etc. They break it down by "The Latest", laying out what it's all about and "What's Next", what will be happening next with it. A great layout for these types of short articles. NEWS BITES (Rating 3) This is where it gets a little more "small townish", which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It covers local "goings-on" (e.g. The Ocean Festival Yard Sale, Auditions for Children's Theater Sets etc). It's pretty neat because your event or story doesn't have to be earth shattering news to make it to print. The Community Meetings also is in this section and is helpful showing what's happening for the week with regards to upcoming events and meetings SC SHERIFF'S BLOTTER (Rating 3) A list of everything our local PD has been up to for the week. Keep up the great job guys and if I was rating you, it would be a "5"! SOAPBOX (VIEWS OPINIONS and INSIGHTS) (Rating 3.5) A place for the community to weigh in. Just write to the editor! GETTING OUT (Rating 4) A section that shows everything that is happening (day by day) in the community. From Concerts to Family Fairs to Basket Weaving. It's in there. SC LIVING (PROFILES of OUR COMMUNITY) (Rating 4) Stories about people in the community and their adventures, successes etc. This is always inspiring to me. BUSINESS DIRECTORY Usually about 2 pages of local business ads broken down by services. It's a nice touch and they have the same on their web site. To make it more helpful, it would be awesome if they listed the company's current Yelp rating, right? SPORTS & OUTDOORS (Rating 4.5) So no local paper would be good without the local high school sports section. This is awesome for families and kids alike. SC SURF (Rating 4.5) Yes, and last but not least the surf section. Gotta have it here in SC!
