The building itself was completed in 1908 and has since been carefully managed to provide guests with an authentic experience of what life was like as a Port Moody pioneer/visitor. Several unique artifacts that have been collected or excavated are found in display cases around the museum providing children and adults alike with a learning opportunity. Outside in the concourse is the eye-catching (and my favourite) landmark: the Venosta - one of the few remaining 1920 CPR sleeping cars. Its restoration and incorporation into our modern society is only a small testimony to the dedication of staff members at the museum to preserve our cultural heritage. (Thank you!) A recent letter from a curator at the big war museums in Calgary, AB expressed concern at Millar's strangely hostile approach, citing examples of similar disputes, in which, in EVERY case, the family prevailed. If the medals are NOT relinquished to us shortly, the Calgary curator assures us that the medals may be relocated to the Calgary museum appropriate to forbear's regiment. Either way, this awful Port Moody museum will NOT have them! Museums worldwide are daily being compelled by courts to repatriate their disputed plunder, returning it to its rightful owners. This is due in no small measure to attitudes like this museum director's. I would urge the public to question the the legality of every museum's right of possession to its collection. In our case, it would have been reasonable to presume first, that there are almost certainly surviving descendants of WWI soldiers, and second, that those descendants enjoy a prima facie claim and right of first refusal to such mementos as against a museum. There are conflicts in every family. It's wrong for a museum to exploit such conflicts for its own dubious purposes. In this case, the war medals' only real value is as family heirlooms. To knowingly deprive a family of our right to honor a forbear's war time valor should be a criminal offence.

They are silent messengers from dead body telling when and how that person died. For me, "the axe killed a whole family" display was very interesting. I mean as I'm nerd, I enjoyed. But some people might get sick to see that because there are still victims hairs on it. VPD preserved those archives very well.

Took the little ones to visit this new museum mainly for the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit that is on…read moreuntil the end of March (2019). Admission is free. It's quite a small exhibit with only 4 dinosaurs (animatronic) and a few fossils & skeletons, probably more suitable for younger children than teens. Although the really young ones might run away crying as the dinosaurs do look quite lifelike. There's also an interactive area with touch screens for all to learn more about the dinosaurs and discoveries. It was interesting to learn a young T-Rex used to be covered in feathers, which is a fairly new found scientific discovery. Right outside the museum is a dinosaur with teeth and all, perfect for photo opps and for kids to bring home something to remember the day. The other side features a play area, the TD Explore Zone. The activities are educational with a focus on sustainability and kids learn how to care for the planet. Right in the centre of the room is a slide/tree house. Among all the stations, there's one with two tablets with some interactive & educational games on them. Some seating area for families to sit and chill. We also saw a lot of kids heading to a room for probably a birthday party so I'm sure room rental is available for parties/events in conjunction with whatever exhibit is featured at the time. There's only one family room with a changing station which became an issue when we had to do some diaper changes but the room was held up by an injured boy and the parents who were waiting for the first aid kit. The women's washroom did not have a changing station. Some of the chairs/couches already had big patches of stains on them, but otherwise the place is fairly new and clean. The other exhibits feature the city of Surrey and its history, which we didn't spend that much time on as there was no interest from the kids. Rating it a 3.5 as it was quite a drive for such a small exhibit

Especially for kids that are learning history. What it was like when...... For the amount of items they have on display they could really use a larger space, but they are constantly working to make the best of the space they have. Ideally you'll want at least an hour & a half to go through everything, but more like 2+ would be better. Definitely a place you won't want to miss!

The exhibits include memorabilia, artifacts, newspaper reprints and even a 1926 Ford Model T and a New Westminster Police motorcycle. Interesting history of a part of the world that is new to me so it was interesting to learn a microcosm of Canadian history here as New Westminster grew from before its earliest settlement to the city it is today. Of course, no Canadian museum is complete without an acknowledgement of the impact of colonialism and New Westminster's exhibits include statements and context that recognize it. It's located in the Anvil Centre, right beside the gallery, and like the gallery, it's free. The museum displays artifacts pertaining to the history of New Westminster, and currently, there is a neat exhibit of the city of New Westminster made entirely out of Lego. The exhibit is called "People Gotta Move", focusing on transportation, complete with a Lego skytrain. Be sure to catch the exhibit before it ends on November 16, 2018. In Point Grey there lies a local secret. A curious little museum and souvenir shop tucked away in a…read moreresidential area at Pioneer Park. This building was one of few surviving structures in the Vancouver fire of 1886. It was a store at the time and became the sole provider of food for the victims of the fire. The park itself is a great place to bring tourists who want to photograph breathtaking views of the water and mountains on the north shore. If you're lucky enough to find the museum opened, you must take some time to explore it as there is much history to be uncovered. Volunteers who run the museum have a keen interest in sharing their knowledge on historical Vancouver. Chock full of amazing artifacts like furniture, clothing and native artifacts from early Vancouver, this building which began as a mill and then a store was rescued by the Native Daughters of British Columbia and floated down on a barge to this location in 1930. This museum really peeked my curiosity and I hope to return soon to explore it farther. You should allot at least an hour of time to really view these interesting items, photographs and read early news articles, etc. *Regarding the 'funny' points below; Trolls will be trolls. Do not think the Natural History Museum in London or the Met in Manhattan. That would be an - apples & oranges comparison, with the former two leading the way when it comes to museums worldwide. The MOA while not as grandiose as the Met, really stands out on its own showcasing mainly First Nations art along with other various artwork. It is a splendid museum. Budget to easily spend a minimum 3 to 5 hours here but definitely give yourself more time & do not rush. There's a lot to see here. There are guided tours available with your paid entry fee. Check at the front desk for more information. Make a note to also go outside of the museum & check out the Totems. Make sure you have a big brekkie or lunch before coming here. The cafe here sells limited items & you cannot bring drinks or food into the museum. Do check online for opening hours in order to give yourself enough time here. Limited parking is available. I parked at the Student Union building then walked over to the MOA along Main Mall & then through the Rose Garden to get here - approximately a 20 minute walk one way. It wasn't cheap but I was with visitors from out of town, so I didn't mind as I was showing them around UBC at the same time. Honestly, I can't wait to go again.
