I booked my husband's first straight razor shave at New York Shaving Company in Freehold after…read moreresearching local barbershops for a traditional hot towel shave with all the pampering. The shop's 1940s atmosphere and music were exactly what I had hoped for, but the service and cleanliness fell short. The website described the $50 Ultimate Shave as including a hot towel, shaving both with and against the grain, eyebrow and nose grooming, and a brief facial massage. My husband only received a shave with the grain, and afterward, several areas of his face still felt rough. This wasn't the thorough, smooth shave we expected. I also noticed thick dust on the interior shelves and boxes of razors and shaving products. An old-school atmosphere can be charming, but a business providing personal grooming services should be spotless. My husband did find the experience relaxing, which I appreciated. However, for $50, customers should receive the complete advertised service in a clean, well-maintained setting. We left feeling that the experience didn't deliver the value or attention to detail we had hoped for.
