The most common types of restaurants are Brazilian, Italian and Japanese. Besides these 3 major cuisines you really need to walk far and wide to find some differing flavors especially if you want to find dishes from South Asia. So my girlfriend and I were very happy to recently find a new Indian restaurant just 1.5 blocks from our apartment in Vila Mariana. The restaurant is called Bawarchi and it is located on the 2nd floor of a house with no major signage directing people inside. To put it very simply, it really is just a house that serves up very nice Indian dishes. The menu is surprisingly extensive with a variety of appetizers, a half dozen different types of naan, dozens of curry dishes as well as other Indian favorites. The owner/chef is Indian and has been in Brazil for 13 years. My girlfriend and I have eaten here 2 times in the last week and we are hooked. All of the dishes are colorful and have so much flavor. The prices of the dishes are also very reasonable. Both times we split an appetizer, a couple naan, curry and rice and some beers and the total came out to R$ 70. It is one of the best deals in town and easily one of the most flavorful.

The selection on my visit included brown rice with mixed vegetables, mattar paneer (peas, tomatoes, and cheese cubes), vadai (lentil fritters with yogurt sauce), roasted potatoes, roasted cucumber with cheese, and a three-cheese lasagna with tomato sauce. All of the items were prepared simply using almost no spices--some of the dishes had the appearance and inspiration of Indian food but certainly lacked the soul. While the flavors could have been better, this still made for a healthy vegetarian lunch that came at an affordable price, and the meal was capped off with a dessert of bananas baked with brown sugar.

It was crowded with persons waiting on the outside to be seated. It seems the larger your group the longer the wait. I didn't have a waiting problem though as it was just me. The service is very fast so I suspect the lines is simply based on the popularity of the restaurant. Your wait time for seating may be 10 - 15 mins, that's only an estimate as I didn't wait. The restaurant is small with a homely feel but maybe they have outgrown the location. It is interesting to note that there are many other restaurants on that street but they all seem empty.

The chicken pieces had skin and were rough--im used to eating butter chicken that melts un your mouth. The spicy level for an Indian restaurant was absolutely non existent. This unit of Samosa & Company is an ambitious undertaking by the owners, kudos to that but then what is ambition if it isn't well managed. The space is well decorated and much more spacious and larger than the other unit at Padre Machado - Vijay, the owner, is cordial as always and I was really looking forward to eating here BUT and that is where the gravy train skids off the tracks - they really need to get their act together. Let me get to the nitty gritty of it : a. It was a really hot evening but that is no excuse for the beer not to be chilled - nothing like ice cold beer served at a quick rate to soothe the nerves. The beer wasn't that cold, the service was slow and we really needed to push the servers to get more beer. b. I was waiting for a few friends to show up but the server came over like 3 times to ask me if I was ready to order the starters and after I told them that we were waiting for friends to come over, they still kept popping up and asking us to order. So we did order, their mutton 'samosas' and to our surprise, it wasn't available - this is on a Friday night at around 8-8:15 pm with the restaurante not even half full...ok, so we ordered the veg samosas which took over 20 minutes to come. c. Starters - i. Samosas - their trademark dish - has been reduced dramatically in size and quality. ii. Pakodas - if waiting for over 20 minutes gets you a plate of 'not-so-fresh' fritters, I wonder what would come next. iii. Chicken Tikka - Needed a lot more marinating. Overall the starters bombed and together with the slow, unresponsive service it felt worse d. Main Course - This took like over an hour, yes over an hour to come ! We were ready to cancel our order and walk out (as quote a few tables had already done, due to the slow service) but the food came and I won't complain, their main course, comprising of their house dal, mutton vindaloo & hands chicken, was good and satisfying - this is where their strength is. If only they can fix their service area. e. Dessert - We tried the gulab-jamuns & the indian kulfi : both were quite nice and surprise oh, surprise !!!....they didn't take long to come The major problems at Samosa& Co. (Al. Jau) are : - Insufficient & untrained staff - Too elaborate a menu : over 70 different food types - Kitchen size is too small for the salon - Fix their samosas - after all its their trademark dish ! I am rooting for this place to do well and I am going to return to see if they have improved : their strengths are their main courses and the desserts. I would love to recommend this place but for now better stick to their Padre Machado unit.
