Attending the 7th Annual Samoa Soirée was a treat. The Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast were more than welcoming. It took place inside the Half Moone Cruise & Celebration Center, which is a gorgeous venue with panoramic views of the water. There was complimentary valet parking provided by East Coast Valet. Awesome. No real coat check; just two huge racks of already filled black coats So if you weren't the first hundred people, you had to pile your coat on a nearby countertop or take it with you. I opted to hang mine on the chair of our table, as to not mistakenly get taken by someone. Then I went to pick up my program, a seamless check-in. The ballroom is where the main event took place -- over a dozen restaurants participated in creating original appetizers and desserts inspired by Girl Scout Cookies. Well, more than inspired; the chefs had to use a Girl Scout Cookie as the key ingredient. It was like a real live episode of Chopped, without watching them cook. I almost tried everything; loved most. And was easily stuffed with my sweet tooth fully appeased. We were encouraged to vote for the People's Choice with marbles given to us at check-in. Winners were to be announced later in the evening, but the time kept getting extended as people were still eating and loving it. Outside of the ballroom was the silent auction. Wine festival tables/packages, horseback riding lessons, artwork, etc. Also, there was an open bar there, and inside of the ballroom that moved at a swift pace. No long lines anywhere. Overall, the Samoa Soiree is a fun, impressive and organized fundraising event.

I am soooooooooooooo honored I was able to attend this most awesome event a few Saturday nights ago. From arrival to departure - a wonderful experience. Special thanks to Xersex and Ms. Katea (Love you both!!) My guest and I arrived about 615 pm (event time 6pm-10pm). We opted out of the valet parking because the parking garage wasn't far and we were "on time." As a result, parking was available on the 2nd floor and for a few hours of celebrating we only paid $3.00. The walk from the garage was less than 5 minutes. And even though the weather was brisked, no harm no foul. The valet attendants seemed a little all over the place anyway. And I did notice after the event, some guests were waiting (with no heat) for their vehicle. And by 930pm it was super chilly. As a result, if able I would suggest parking in the garage, if you head over to the Half Moon Cruise Center. But once inside, there was a greeter whom pointed us in the direction to register and obtain our souvenir pamphlets. This process was fast and smooth. There was also a coat check (no additional cost). Our pamphlets include our name and bidding number as well. We also received a cute bag of green marbles. These marbles served as votes to be casted for the participating restaurant dishes. These votes counted towarded the "People's Choice Award." There also was a panel of judges. These judges were responsible for the other awards to be given out at the end of the night. So not only was this a contest, but it was a fundraiser as well. A silent auction took place while the event was in progress as well. Hence, that's what the bidding numbers were used for. Some of the auction participants include: Mermaids Factory, Farm Bureau Live, Gordon Biersch, Embassy Suites, ODU, Farm Fresh and the Ferguson Center, again that's only a few of about 79. Before you entered the main room, the front room included the silent auction items and hor devours spread (cheeses, fruit). Here also included an open bar (beer, wine and water). Pretty much the appetizer before the meal took place in this room. But once you reached the carpeted area...let the party begin!! The guest speaker, Vanessa Coria, gave the welcome message. Even though, it wasn't silent during this time, the show went on. And sampling was already in progress. The sounds of Lewis McGehee filled the room somewhat. I really couldn't hear him over the many guests at the event. As a result, this added feature was just ok. Perhaps a full band would be ideal next time. And this way, people that ate too much (like me) can dance off the added calories. Nevertheless, let the sampling begin. I believe about 19 restaurants/venues participated. While I didn't sample them all (by choice), I did have a few favorites. My ultimate favorite, Rocket Fuel Juice Bar & Food Lab. They are located in the Bute Street YMCA. They had an amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing salad, that I cannot wait to try again and again. I think I had about 3 bowls :) And the presentation was super cute! I also overly enjoyed the dish from Cypress Grille. They are located inside the Embassy Suites in Hampton. The shrimp, quiona and a few edamame made this dish soooooooo yummy!!! Some other participants included: AJ Gators, BRAVO, Cotton Southern Bistro, Farm Fresh, Hell's Kitchen, Lucky Oyster, Now You're Cooking, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and Twisted Sisters Cupcakes. Whewwwwwwwwwwwww...and that still wasn't everyone. So perhaps you can get the feel as to why I didn't sample it all. I mean it was just way to much. But next time, I am NOT going to eat before attending this event, because I was sadden I couldn't indulge in EVERYTHING!! This event was pretty much standing room only. But if you were fortunate enough to secure a table of 8 or so then you were A OK. But it was a lot of movement, so even thought we didn't have seats we were just fine. But I'm thinking if I did have a seat, I may have eaten myself into a coma it was so so much to sample. And the sampling lasted all night long. The staff and all that participated were friendly and all seemed to enjoy the evening just as much as the people they served. The awards were announced around 915-930 pm. Awards were given and pictures were taken throughout the night. I'm not sure where they will be posted. But it was such a great way to spend a Saturday night and for a great cause. And if you had your own camera, you could take pictures in front of the Samoa set up. All eateries that participated used girl scouts cookie(s) of their choice to create a dish for tasting. This was such a neat idea and I am looking forward to next year, when they'll be celebrating year 8!! The event cost $60 per person. So in my case $120/couple. We were full off of food and drink and left happy!! Tips were honored! Not your typical Saturday night, and for that reason alone, I loved every moment of it!! See you next time

I worked at Naval Air Station (NAS) Norfolk for about a year. This was quite the commute from Baltic Avenue in Virginia Beach to Norfolk, via the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel! I do not miss that tunnel! It's 3.5 miles that are mostly completely underwater. It was fun to watch the SEALs train at NAS! I figured for a $20 admission, there would be a lot of freebies...not the case. Not every booth gave out samples, and many of the ones that did, only gave out a small pinch. One booth was selling chocolate infused red wine that was actually pretty good, but when I inquired to buy some, they said they were not selling it at the festival due to lack of a license. What?! Their line was huge, they could have made so much money. All in all, I'm still glad I went, but then again my ticket was a gift. If I had paid $20, only to find that I had to drop a lot more cash inside to get any reasonable sampling of chocolate, I would have left very disappointed.

The lines were RIDICULOUS, so we were hopeful it would be a fun event... Honestly, there was not one positive about this event. 1) There were not very many vendors, and not all of them were chocolate related (there were several wines, & beers, Verizon Fios...) 2) A lot of vendors ran out of samples. We stood in line for the Culinary Institute's line for 20 minutes, and they ran out of whatever they were making about 4 people before me (with about 30 people still behind me). 3) Some of the vendors that were chocolate related, weren't giving out chocolate. For example, Twisted Sisters. They had cartons of chocolate cupcakes they were selling, but instead of giving away mini cupcakes (which would have made sense), they were giving out small cups of stale, chocolate drizzled popcorn. There was another cupcakery there not giving out anything AT ALL... just selling their cupcakes. So, what did the money we spent on the tickets go towards? No decorations, VERY FEW samples. It was an incredibly frustrating experience.

For this event to be the first ever, they hit a major league homerun!…read more We arrived about 645pm and the event kicked off at 7 p.m. Free parking was offered right next to the Courtyard...within walking distance so this was a plus! We walked in the building and immediately was greeted by the PTA President of W.H. Taylor. She seemed very excited about the event and stressed to us that it's their first event as they are trying to work out kinks in order to make this night successful. Of course it was no issue to us and we understood and waited patiently to be checked in. They ran out of owl paddles to be used for bidding. But one of the helpers quickly transformed one for me. Downstairs featured a live auction as well as their setup for the mystery cooking competition that was taking place later on that evening. It was setup like something that you would see on TV. There were 3 stations for the chefs to do their thing and seating for the live audience. There was also a photographer downstairs that was available to take your still shots behind a beautiful gold backdrop. But the main attractions were upstairs...the tastings!! The room not even larger than a standard hotel conference room featured at least 10 vendors. Vendors included: Jessy's Taco Bistro, La Bella Ghent, Pendulum, Supper and others. Beer tasting samples from O'Connor were in the lobby alongside cash bars. In another conference room of some sort was the silent bid auction. The second floor were the action was taking place was pretty much standing room only. The temperature was super hot and borderline uncomfortable. But luckily someone saw a need to open all the Windows on the floor...what a relief! Overall, everyone seemed super excited for the night. We even met some of the parents, administrators and employees of W.H. Taylor. And we were well received and complimented by them all. It seemed as though they didn't expect "outsiders" of the school to attend. When I mentioned we were apart of the Yelp community they were in total shock like in a great way. Not only was this event sold out but the vendors featured some great eats. My favs Pendulum and Jessy's! I'd say this event was a huge success!! It started off with 100% in attendance and then the live auction...insane bids all for a great cause!! I don't know if a 100% percent of the proceeds go back to the school but if so I'm sure this fundraiser will return next year and years to come. I'm glad I was a part of their first event and so looking forward to next year. I'm looking forward to more of a variety of tastings and perhaps a larger room/venue. Have fun | enjoy life

The space is intimate and cozy with side-by-side counter seating right in front of the open kitchen -- perfect for watching the chefs at work and adds to the whole experience. We started with the ensalata di Luce and it was fresh and flavorful, a great balance to the rich mains. The pollo con strati was perfectly cooked and the lobster gnocchi was phenomenal -- rich, indulgent, and definitely worth ordering a side of sourdough bread for dipping in the sauce! To finish, the cheesecake with berries was a delightful end to the meal -- creamy and just sweet enough without being heavy. Service was attentive without being intrusive and the ambiance complemented the food beautifully. This place is small and fills up fast, so reservations are a very good idea, but snagging a seat at the counter made our night feel special and lively. Overall -- truly one of the best Italian meals in Norfolk if you're looking for great food, a cozy atmosphere, and a memorable dinner. Always my fave & we will definitely be back!

I was told that there was no availability for the evening and I should try to walk in for bar seats. Upon arrival, the bar was not busy so we took three seats and noticed that the table behind us never got sat the entire time we were there. Second time dining here and would not return because service from Branice C. was a C- in her caring that she was even at work, to the upcharges for extra marinara sauce to go with the greasy overbreaded calamari appetizer. The oil saturated flavor was almost nauseating. Please change the oil in your fryer! Prices were not excessive but the upcharge for using a credit card was. Who really walks around with $300 cash in pocket to pay for dinner without a credit card fee. JUST ADD IT IN YOUR MENU PRICES!!!! The Boar Ragu was truly not boar but probably run of the mill ground beef and the four tiny slices of steak on the Caesar salad was a joke. There are so many other lovely restaurants along this block that this is a skip right past for the future.
