A mixed experience - 3.5 stars.
GOOD:
1. The thin crust on my House Special pizza was excellent. It was crispy on the edges - nice.
2. My cup of soup-of-the-say, bacon cheeseburger, was off-the-hook great! The soup was definitely the flavor high point of my meal.
3. My "War Pigs" tap beer, Foggy Geez, was excellent. It came out fast and ice cold.
4. The service was very good. (Then again, I was one of only 2 customers in the whole building at 3:00.) The bartender was doing everything but cook. And he was great, totally on top of his game.
5. There's plenty of parking.
BAD:
1. There's a big difference between the on-line menu and the in-house fancy laminated paper menu. Strangely, the permanent paper menu is the one they use. The on-line menu (the one that takes only 5 minutes to update) has numerous items that aren't available.
2. I wanted to get the Beer Battered Onion Rings listed on the on-line menu. Strange - not available. So I got the Ellsworth Wisconsin jalapeno cheese curds. I've had them a million times before....but never the jalapeno version. Pretty disappointing. Could hardly taste any peppers. And it wasn't really what I wanted in the first place.
3. I wanted to get The Macho (All Meat) pizza listed on the on-line menu. Strange, again - not available. So I got the House Special "Legacy Pizza". It was okay. It would have been a lot better with more red sauce.
4. The last time I attended the buffet, some of the pizzas had black burnt crust in places. And some of the pizza was undercooked. My wife was pissed off. I had a more chill point of view and simply went back for pizza that was cooked correctly. For a place that's been around since 1954, I'd think the pizza would be PERFECT every single time.
5. I wanted to get the 1919 Root Beer brand float listed on the on-line menu. Again, again, again - not available. I got a root beer float with root beer out of the bar soda gun. It's a minor point - but irritating. If you advertise a premium root beer, it should be a premium root beer. Even Arby's manages to serve up Barq's Root Beer brand floats.
6. Finally, I thought my lunch was a little pricey for what I got. My total bill for my lunch was 45 bucks. I left a 10 dollar tip so the whole thing set me back 55 dollars.
That pretty much sums it up. They're above average. I probably won't go back though. But if I lived close by and if I had a bunch of kids, I'd probably stop by the buffet with the kiddos on a regular basis.
Despite my criticisms, you have to give Sammy's props for being around since 1954! And I'm happy they survived the COVID shutdown.
