Great experience, the team of volunteers that work on the train are very supportive and knowledgeable. We were historically briefed throughout the train ride. Will definitely do it again.

Enjoyable journey to Plains GA that allowed us to learn more about our national history.

Drummer Boy Civil War Museum

Great museum filled with great insight of the prisoner's experiences at Andersonville. It's a small…read moremuseum but a great size packed with artifacts from various civil war battles. This is a must FIRST STOP. Before you go to the Andersonville historic state park!! And their gift shop is way better than the state park.

And when the battle was over, drummer boys were also relied upon to police the field, helping to carry wounded men to the hospital tents, and to bury the slain." Boys as young as 9-12yrs would sometimes run away from home to enlist to become drummer boys in the Civil War. Some believe that the youngest soldier killed during the entire American Civil War was a 13 year-old drummer boy named Charles King. The drums were an important part of the battlefield communications system to signal different commands like "attack" or "retreat". When the fighting began, drummers generally moved to the rear and stayed away from the shooting. Drummers were assigned to infantry regiments and buglers were assigned to cavalry or horse artillery. Drummers were often expected to help the medical personnel by working in makeshift field hospitals, assisting surgeons during battlefield amputations by helping to hold down patients, or maybe called up to carry away the severed limbs. They were also called stretcher bearers; hence, they walked around the battlefield looking for the wounded and brought them to medical care. Twenty-eight army musicians received the Medal of Honor during the American Civil War.

Quality Inn Americus - Room 227 Bathroom was a nightmare.

I am giving two stars because the guy at the front desk was real nice. However, stand aware: Were…read morethis gentleman not there you would get a negative rating, were I able. Let's address my issues: 1. Very few guests are currently staying at the Quality Inn Americus. I should not have to walk across the property to my room. There must have been an open room closer. Seriously, the place was empty. 2. I was not able to get into my room and had to run back to the office. The manager also could not get in, but had an electronic device that disabled the lock. I told him not to worry about the keys as I would be up and out in the morning. 3. Upon getting into my room I soon tried to sleep yet was awoken by the guests attempting to access the next room. They too could not get in and the manager again had to be called to use his door opener. (Yeah, it is strange that all those rooms are vacant, everyone had to be in one area.) 4. A hot shower....Nah... here you get a luke warm shower. 5. There was holes in the wall.... No comment... 6. The front door would not fully shut unless I gave it a hard kick. Fellow travelers... cheaper, but so is a roach motel.

While it was conveniently located, the stay was not pleasant. I called 2 times to confirm that a…read morecheckin at 1am would be ok. I was told by an associate at that location it would be both times, both times stated qith no charge. So, upon our arrival, Gaykay started the experience poorly. He was sleeping on the couch when we arrived. Came to the door with no shoes on. He proceeded to tell me there was a $40 charge to start at 1am. His voice matching the associate I spoke with on 2 separate occassions, but because I couldn't prove it was him, I reluctantly paid the additional charge. Upon arriving in the room, it was really gross. The bathroom area was a disaster. It looked like someone was aiming for the walls, if you catch my drift. The toilet had dust and hair all over it. The tub looked like those overexaggerated Bath Fitter commercials, as if it hadn't been scrubbed in years. Even with a request to clean the bathroom, it was still in shambles. I was also told if I was a Choice Rewards member, breakfast would be comped. Gaykay said there would be a charge. At that point I had enough of the extras being tacked on, and asked to speak to the manager. He relented and offered breakfast for the remainder of the stay, because he too, was trying to lie about the number I called being the corporate line. Keep in mind this number was on his business card AND the front of the building, AND much of the literature associated with this location. The staff outside of Gaykay, was exceptional. They are the ones who salvaged some stars. The young lady in the restaurant was extraordinarily accommodating. The young ladies who took over the front desk after Gaykay's shift were marvelous. The cleaning crew that I encountered were sweet and pleasant. Would I stay here again? Only if it was gutted, renovated, and completely fresh. It was clearly a motel in the area that was purchased by the Choice Group, slapped together with some mild upgraded, and rebranded.

I'm not a glamper, but I do like my amenities like full hook ups, WiFi and Cable TV. Unlike Dave who would like us to camp in a swamp lol! We arrived pretty late about 6:30 and the nice lady who I spoke to left our campsite and info on a board entering the campsite. The simplicity of the area, cotton fields, very small towns, pecan trees, made this campsite very beautiful without all the glitz and glamor of some larger parks. We got a very large pull through site surrounded by Bermuda grass. We were able to go and get dinner in the lovely town of Americus and bring it back with us. There is a bath house, a store, a dog park and it is situated next to a golf course. They even offer free nine holes. Though we didn't use any of the amenities, because of COVID 19, it's nice to know that they are there. The place is totally pet friendly with pet stations and waste bags. Coming here has been a great start to our vacation or whatever you can call it. We have been pretty much quarantined in Cape Coral looking at each other since March lol! It is like a breath of fresh air with the exception of our masks!
