Thrifting is my jam! Goodwill's of Greater Detroit have weekly offers that arrive directly to your…read morephone. The Goodwill Madison Heights had as many customers making donations in the drive-thru as they had in the store shopping for that hidden gem(s) to purchase. For that reason, this is the best time of year to go thrifting as many people are saying out with the old after the holiday season and for the new year. I love the offer of 50% off a specific color tag because I use that as my guide to shop. It's like a color-coded scavenger hunt. This day was all purple tags were 50% off. I found four items: a jumpsuit, two sundress and a brand new two-piece dress all for a whopping $16.49. The check out line was easy breezy too! Thank you Drinida!

I've been here twice and haven't been able to find much as a young adult. I feel like the demographic is for older people/families. It's also very small previously in like a CVS. The clothes are also not well organized so sizes/categorizations are incorrect. Service isn't bad the workers have been chill both times I was there.

However, in January 2026 the discount structure for regional stores has apparently changed, but there was no posted notice about it at this location as of January 15. The long-running 25% discounts on certain days and for certain groups are gone. The maximum now appears to be 10% and there are fewer specific discount days. Not sure about the Friday-Saturday 5 for $5 promotions that have also been running for many years; I didn't ask, and there was no signage the day I was there. As other thrift-store shoppers note here and elsewhere online, prices have been rising in recent years, while the cost of inventory has not changed (donations=free), and the dominant brands/origins of donated items reflect lower-quality products from Temu, Shein, Forever 21, Amazon brands, Walmart/Meijer brands, and Dollar Tree.

The "brick and brack" or Home Goods as other places call it is a bit on the higher priced side and there are many items not priced (which is understandable with that size of store, just difficult when hunting for items). I adore coming to this Salvation Army, but I don't bring my older friends because the lighting is so dim and I find it difficult to see clearly and often you'll walk out with a pair of shoes or dress that's a shade or two different than what you thought it was inside!

The customer service and lack of any kind of soul or compassion in the management…read more I showed up to buy some new pants on Thursday (yesterday). Clearly I'm not made of money if you're shopping at a thrift store for clothes. 1. There is no dressing room anymore. There sure used to be and I'd be able to make sure my clothes fit before buying them. Something that happened in EVERY CLOTHING STORE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. 2. They don't offer bags. Very strange... but whatever. So I buy 3 pairs of pants and go home and one of them has a rip in the calf. I call the store cause that $12 is a lot for me, again, I'm not rolling in the dough, I have to budget for everything. Orlando answers the phone and tells me that it's not store policy to take back items if they don't have the tag or the receipt, I need both. I said I didn't have the receipt anymore but I still have the tag. And instead of being forthcoming and saying what they mean they say it's not store policy to accept that but I should come talk in person. So, a fun riddle. (That's sarcasm. It was not fun). So I try in the other 2 pairs of pants and one fits while the other does not fit well. I don't see any reason to call about this second pair of pants and waste someone's time, I'll just bring it with me. I show up wearing gym shorts and with a backpack because I can try clothes on if I'm wearing shorts to see if they fit... but this feels uncomfortable and awkward to have to try on clothes in public. And it's rather humiliating. Why is there no dressing room? Anyway Orlando tells me I can exchange the pants that had a rip in the calf but since I didn't mention the ones that didn't fit and I don't have the receipt I cannot exchange those. So I guess fuck me for being poor and misplacing the receipt and not being psychic and knowing how to read through their riddle coded message. To me that $12 for that pair of pants is a big deal. I am struggling to survive. I just got a new washer and dryer in the building I live in so I don't have to wash clothes by hand or travel far to get to the laundromat. My other pairs of pants have holes in them and are worn out. I can't show up presentable with clothes that fit and aren't full of holes, I'm not trying to get something flashy and stylish. I'm just trying to have pants I can wear that aren't full of holes and worn down I can wear to work, to an interview, or just out and about and I do not have much. Anyone who works at Salvation Army definitely knows they are selling to people who are not making much money. It was financially taxing to waste a bus trip to go out there twice rather than once. And this cold unfeeling callus individual Orlando spoke to me like I was a child and did not care about me having wasted my money on clothes that don't fit in a place that doesn't have a fucking dressing room. Here's a coded message: do not let me run into you outside, Orlando.
