They provided a cot (pack and play) for our baby. Parking is small and food is a bit pricey. If you read on Trip Advisor many complained about this, so knowing this you know what you're getting yourself into. We planned to arrive early and there was plenty of parking. We were going to eat out but after a long day adventuring we decided to eat downstairs. For the price of convenience, I'd say it was well worth it. Would we come back again? YES

If you find yourself visiting Ipswich you should, first, reflect on the life choices that brought…read moreyou here and, second, book a room at Pentahotel Ipswich. Pentahotel Ipswich is wonderfully located within walking distance of the Ipswich train station. The rooms are clean, modern, well-maintained, and generously sized. This is a well-managed, excellent, two star property that is (in terms of relative quality and style) a cross between an Ace Hotel and a Holiday Inn. A few very minor criticisms follow. The free wifi is rather slow (there is a higher-speed, paid option available). Check-in is, oddly, located at the hotel bar so you may need to wait for the staff to finish mixing a whiskey and soda before they can give you your room key. Corridors are slightly dreary. The retro telephones inside the guest rooms, while very hip, are essentially impossible to use. UPDATE - I stayed there a second time in January 2017 and nothing has changed, it's still a great value, well-kept, and centrally located. Really, the only downside is that it's in Ipswich.

It's very easy to be cynical about "cookie cutter chain hotels", but this offering from IHG's…read moremid-range Holiday Inn brand is one of its better attempts, offering larger rooms than average (by UK/Europe standards, at least!), and a couple "bonuses" that lift it above 3* mediocrity: - An indoor swimming pool with reasonably long opening hours - Air conditioning that actually works in 25C+ ambient! The only minor criticism I would level against the rooms is the lack of doors on the wardrobe - I always associate open-front wardrobes with "2* cost saving measures". But really, that's just me being picky. Locationwise, its on the outskirts near the A12 junction, and has a large car park, so really its more useful if you have a car. A large, 24 hour supermarket is conveniently situated just down the road. So overall it would be one of my "3 1/2*" nominations if such a banding exists, but as it doesn't I'll stretch to 4*.

The rooms are spacious, and equipped with the regular hotelroom commodities like a fridge, watercooker, tv and an iron. Besides the 'obligatory' bar and restaurant the hotel also has an indoor swimming pool, which is ideal for relaxing. The food served is better than your average hotel meals, and relies on the local cuisine and suppliers. The staff is without exemption helpfull and friendly, which is a great plus. Last but not least: free coffee in the morning near the reception!

The Case - Tea and biscuits!

There is something spectacular in knowing that people still live in places where a neighbour, or…read morefriend of a friend, can be called on for a favour. That was "The Case" at "The Case." Ha ha. I make myself laugh. But really, in the villages of England, places are few and far between, and during the holidays even more so. We're talking the old world where sometimes places are still closed on Sundays and heaven forbid you should want a hairdressers on a holiday Monday! Not like the States, that's for sure. The Brit and I stayed here one Christmas in 2009, and the owner made sure we had a lovely stay as a favour to The Brit's Dad. Typically she wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of giving us breakfast and tea and biscuits to have in the morning and such, but they did for us. The hotel is lovely and the restaurant a great place for a good meal. There is a little seating area for you to wait to be seated where the owner will happily greet you and take your drink order. The drinks were a bit slow coming, but we had time to waste. Things go slower in the UK don't they. Kick back and enjoy your libations my friend! I think the owner was quite proud to have us sit in the seating area before we sat down for our meal, as that seemed her focus despite a predominantly empty restaurant only due to the time of year. I enjoyed a proper English Christmas dinner even though we were going to have another one in a day's time (I love parsnips!) and The Brit had a tasty steak. It takes some time, but it was yummy! The morning after Christmas we were the only ones it seemed in the hotel. Our biscuits were really tasty, but the tea not as good. Breakfast was a proper English and perfectly prepared. I loved our room and found it nicely styled and decorated. If I remember correctly, each room is named a different colour, or at least styled in a different colour. We had purple. It really was a nice place and felt luxurious. The price was great and I would definitely stay here again if ever in the area and in need.

We even accidentally binned something that we later realised we needed, and we called up Linda and she fished it out for us! Open Monday Evenings, unlike a lot of independent places.
