This part of England has a formidable history, but not as great as the local American sacrifice of its warriors in the air. This former country inn is a USA memorial because it was a social hub near to the airfield of a bomber group of the 8th AAF base at Lavenham of WW2. B17 legends. You visit hallowed ground in the bar where many aircrew never trod again. The Swan at Lavenham is now a premier country hotel with restaurant. Outstanding menus and the choice complement an excursion to, or a stay in this part of Suffolk. Refined old bedrooms with modern attributes. Timbered Tudor English architecture. The prosperity of the mediaeval wool trade is still encountered in many Suffolk villages with the heritage of the merchants who commissioned their local churches, houses and their shop premises. We wonder at the skill of craftsmen who built the churches and can only imagine now their former early internal decoration and splendour.

I am in my mid-40s , but I was comfortably the youngest in the room for dinner, barring the staff. The menu was reasonably well executed but in no sense ambitious; my "Chicken Supreme" was nice but did not rock any boats. Similarly, the chocolate fondant with peanut ice cream was unspectacular. A very "safe" place to eat.

The Angel Hotel is a beautiful hotel in a great location, and overall I've had a very enjoyable…read morestay. Unfortunately, dinner this evening was a bit of a disappointment. I ordered the scallops and unfortunately found the metal piece used to hold the chorizo sausage casing in my dish. It was in the food, and when I bit into it, it nearly chipped my tooth. Finding a piece of metal in a dish is obviously quite concerning. The roasted potatoes that came with the vegetarian roulade were so hard that they practically required a chainsaw to cut! Then, when the roulade was served, the server did not mention that the gravy pot was extremely hot. I picked it up to pour the gravy over the Yorkshire pudding and immediately burned my finger. It was so hot that I dropped the pot, missing the Yorkshire pudding; the gravy ended up on my plate instead. Thankfully, I wasn't blistered, but my finger was red and painful. At that point, I wasn't even sure whether I wanted to continue with dessert. It's a shame because the hotel itself is lovely, and I have otherwise enjoyed my stay. Unfortunately, the dinner experience fell well short of what I would expect from The Angel. Hopefully this was simply an off night, but there were enough issues with the food and service that it definitely needs to be addressed.

Some of us began with a selection of teas, and others chose coffee. The finger sandwiches were delicious and included turkey and cranberry sauce, egg salad, and cucumber & cream cheese. My friends raved about the scotch eggs and sausage roll, but I enjoyed the salmon and dill roll. The buttermilk scone was perfectly tender and was served with jam and clotted cream. Desserts included a macaron, a chocolate orange profiterole, an apple crumble tartlet and Christmas cake. All were perfection. Staff were very attentive. Paid parking is adjacent.

The Case - Tea and biscuits!

There is something spectacular in knowing that people still live in places where a neighbour, or…read morefriend of a friend, can be called on for a favour. That was "The Case" at "The Case." Ha ha. I make myself laugh. But really, in the villages of England, places are few and far between, and during the holidays even more so. We're talking the old world where sometimes places are still closed on Sundays and heaven forbid you should want a hairdressers on a holiday Monday! Not like the States, that's for sure. The Brit and I stayed here one Christmas in 2009, and the owner made sure we had a lovely stay as a favour to The Brit's Dad. Typically she wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of giving us breakfast and tea and biscuits to have in the morning and such, but they did for us. The hotel is lovely and the restaurant a great place for a good meal. There is a little seating area for you to wait to be seated where the owner will happily greet you and take your drink order. The drinks were a bit slow coming, but we had time to waste. Things go slower in the UK don't they. Kick back and enjoy your libations my friend! I think the owner was quite proud to have us sit in the seating area before we sat down for our meal, as that seemed her focus despite a predominantly empty restaurant only due to the time of year. I enjoyed a proper English Christmas dinner even though we were going to have another one in a day's time (I love parsnips!) and The Brit had a tasty steak. It takes some time, but it was yummy! The morning after Christmas we were the only ones it seemed in the hotel. Our biscuits were really tasty, but the tea not as good. Breakfast was a proper English and perfectly prepared. I loved our room and found it nicely styled and decorated. If I remember correctly, each room is named a different colour, or at least styled in a different colour. We had purple. It really was a nice place and felt luxurious. The price was great and I would definitely stay here again if ever in the area and in need.

I didn't mind though as I was just going to be in and out. According to my colleagues, a room with a harbour view is definitely worth asking for. My room was very stylish I thought. Unique things that I hadn't seen anywhere else like mosiac style feature wallpaper in a dramatic blue and black pattern, and just nice little touches like a retro style telephone and dotty mugs, and a big rustic wooden bench/desk. There is nothing corporate about this place at all, it is very nicely done. The bathroom was great too - a seperate shower cubicle with an overhead and side on shower, and a big double bath tub - I had a fantastic soak before heading out for the evening. The room had its own temperature control, and the bed was very comfortable - I felt like I was being enveloped in a gigantic soft marshmallow. I can't comment much more than that, as I didn't have dinner or breakfast there, and didn't use the bar. I'd like to come back to the Salthouse though - when away from home through work, staying here feels like a real treat.

A little walk from the center but since be city is not big and the walk is nice (along the harbor) it is no problem. Good breakfast in the morning too. Dont Forget to ask for a room with a view on the harbor. Nothing says "good morning " better than the seagulls waking you up and the view on the boats. With a room in a corner of the building the view gets even wider :) They have a free parking so let your car there and enjoy an healthy walk. Will stay there no doubt if I ever go back to city.
