But when it comes to fishing for grouper, redfish and other species around Crystal River, I was clueless, so on a recent trip there I was smart enough to set up a charter for my buddies and me with Captain Louie at Florida Fishing Adventures. It was epic. First off, I saw a lot of different boats from the various outfitters and Cpt. Louie's rig rides like a dream, has a huge beam, and a ton of fishing space - a much better layout than any of the other boats I saw. Louie also didn't cut any corners when it comes to his fishing gear, with top-of-the line setups for our day on the water. But most importantly, Louie put us on the fish immediately, and coached us up on how to hook and land those grumpy grouper. We caught our limits of quality fish, which made for a great meal and ton of filets for the freezer. I won't even think about booking with another guide next time we're in town. He gave us plenty of time to look for things to come up out of the water which was great for my 2 year old. Boat was shaded and was enjoyable even with a small child. We started at the River Ventures Dive Center at 6:30AM, where we were offered coffee, tea, hot cocoa and snacks, and spent the next bit with an educational video and a wetsuit fitting. From there, we took a bus to the dock, in the most gorgeous sunrise light. let by our Guide Nat. Captain Emerson met us at the covered, heated pontoon, and our group set off through the water, for the protected manatee zone. The water was FULL of our sweet sea potatoes... in fact, it was difficult to even get off the boat because our new friends swam right up to the ladder. Nat had given excellent instructions. We immediately leaned into our pool noodles and gently followed her lead through the water. It took just moments before manatees were all around us. We stayed calm and quiet, and they either continued snoozing, or swam up to investigate us. Nat was on point with the camera, and with showing us things like the tarpon and sheepshead fish, and she was also shared little details about the manatees as we floated. Of course, with nature, there are no guarantees, and I really had no idea what to expect, but I was absolutely delighted by the interactions we had. The cold snap absolutely played into our favor, and I am so glad we showed up with our adventurous spirit. When we returned to the boat, there were more snacks, as well as hot cocoa, coffee, tea, and a variety of drinks in the cooler (water, beer, wine, soda, and white claws). We were so grateful for the boat covering and heater as we made our way back to the dock, and we had great chats with Nat, Emerson, and the other group on our tour. Was it cold? Sure. But the water felt great at 72ºF, and our wetsuits did a wonderful job of protecting us and keeping us buoyant. Our experience was incredible, from booking, to engaging with the staff with any questions we had, to the actual tour itself. The photos and videos were absolutely phenomenal, as well, and we were happy to purchase the package, as well as some gifts from the souvenir shop. We will be back for more manatee viewing, or to try one of their other tours. Thank you so much for the best day!

If you want to enjoy time with the manatees with a team that makes the trip worth it... Double J Adventures is the place. We saw numerous manatees and the captain always gauged what the customers wanted and took us to some really great spots. CPT Garret was from the area and made sure we were taken care of. The 3 sister springs was the ending spot where we relaxed in the warm water and still spotted manatees on the way back to to boat. We are so glad we did a trip with Double J Adventures!…read more Have to admit that I initially planned on booking with 1 of the bigger operators, but they did not have slots at the times we wanted. So I looked for other operators on TripAdvisor, and found really good reviews for Double J. Gave a quick call to Capt. Joanne, and booked for the trip on their website. On the actual day, we got the boat to ourselves (there were 6 in our party). Capt. Jo was enlightening, and explained everything to us. We went to 2 spots where we got to swim with not less than 6 or 7 different manatees. Also got to touch and interact with them quite a bit. In the course of the break, some of us needed to use the bathroom, and Capt. Jo very kindly obliged. She also lent us her waterproof camera, and emailed links to the photos to us the following day. All in all, a very special experience, with a really professional operator! Word of advice: go for the early tours before the place gets swarmed with visitors!

But then he diligently searched for the spot until he found where the red fish were flocking. We caught 1, 2, 4 red fish each among the three of us in 30 minutes. It was an incredible rush. Sometimes they wrestled and broke the line, but Capt. Zorn always helped us get the shrimp back on and re-cast. We each caught 2-5 fish that day, and sent back all but one each due to the rules. They provide secured storage and protection fee for long term time contract for boat owners' rent space!! This is where the manatee tours dock their boats!! A Tarpon stole my GoPro! Luke and Nicole saved the day! I foolishly tried to get some close up,…read moreunderwater, tarpon footage off the dock. The gigantic fish jumped up and bit my hand and took my GoPro Camera out of it! I thought it was lost forever. Luke and Nicole heard the commotion and came out of the bait shop to see what was going on. They heard what happened and used their genius brains to get my GoPro back! They brought out a magnet on a rope to find the camera on the bottom of the river. The tide was really high, Luke zip tied a mop handle onto a net handle to make it long enough to scoop my camera up! I couldn't believe the fish swiped it and then couldn't believe the got it back! Pete's Pier has the best staff always willing to help, they totally go above and beyond!
