Our main manatee tour, and the one we recommend highly, meets at 6:00 am by reservation. It is a lot less crowded with other tour companies, rental boats, and our local recreational boaters at that time. Our next tours can be scheduled for 9:00 am or 11:00 am.
Join us on our new scalloping boat for some great family fun while you learn a bit about the local environment and gather some great tasting morsels. Our 5 passenger vessel has a Bimini top for shade and cold soft drinks are included. Snorkeling gear is also included.
Spend a morning or afternoon on the Crystal River enjoying a casual paddle around Kings Bay on one of our rental kayaks or paddle boards. Kayaking is a safe and easy activity. Our wide "sit on top" kayaks are very stable, they are not "tippy". Kings Bay is a circle about 3 miles in diameter, compromising approximately 46 acres of marshlands, tributaries, islands, and popular swimming areas. The popular Three Sisters Springs is only about a 20 minute paddle.
History
Established in 1989.
Bird's Underwater is owned and operated by Captains Bill "Bird" and Diane Oestreich. We have been operating as guides in Crystal River since 1989. We offer personal attention, supervision and education to our customers. We love the manatees and have learned to balance your desire to see them with a respect for the animal, the laws and the local environment.
Our tours are intended to be educational, as well as enjoyable. We are devoted to educating the public about the plight of the manatees and helping to protect the manatees from boat propellers and other man made hazards.
Bird's Underwater had been teaching SCUBA in the Crystal River and High Springs area for over 20 years. We've earned a world wide reputation for safe, patient, and FUN training for divers of all levels.
Imagine how much fun it can be to actually see the beautiful reefs, wrecks, and cave systems you see on television. Our students come from all walks of life, from 10 year old's to people in their 70's and 80's
Meet the Business Owner: Bill and Diane O.
Bill "Bird" and Diane Oestreich attended the same High School in Northwest Indiana, but did not formally meet until Bill was a freshman at Indiana University, where he received his Basic Scuba Diving certification in 1977.
Although diving was a top interest, it did not exceed his love for music, having trained in percussion since childhood. Bill and Diane joined forces for the next 11 years as professional musicians, touring the country and overseas.
In 1989 it was time for a haircut! Settling in Crystal River, Florida, the years since have been devoted to guided manatee tours during the winter months and dive instruction year round, primarily during the dog (not a popular aquatic animal) days of summer.
Bird has now taught thousands of classes, including: Basic Scuba, Full Cave, Tri-Mix and others.
