If you're arriving after dark, be cautious--the entrance sign is not lit. I was driving a 40-foot motorhome towing a 30-foot trailer and mistakenly took the first turn instead of the second. The signage isn't illuminated, so headlights are helpful to confirm you're in the right place. I highly recommend arriving before dark. The campground is very quiet and feels like stepping back into "old Florida." It sits right on the river, where we saw otters playing and fish jumping--literally jumping two feet out of the water. Very cool. We stayed in Site 20, a pull-in site with excellent river views and located right next to the boat ramp. There's a small store on-site that sells firewood, fire rings at the sites, and it's perfect for a relaxing evening. The permanent residents were extremely friendly and helpful. Kayaks are available to rent for river trips (we didn't do that this time). They don't sell bait, but there's a great bait and tackle shop less than a quarter mile across the street with wonderful people--perfect for fishing off the dock. No problems at all, the dogs loved it, and my wife really enjoyed how relaxing it was. We'd happily stay again.

We started at the River Ventures Dive Center at 6:30AM, where we were offered coffee, tea, hot cocoa and snacks, and spent the next bit with an educational video and a wetsuit fitting. From there, we took a bus to the dock, in the most gorgeous sunrise light. let by our Guide Nat. Captain Emerson met us at the covered, heated pontoon, and our group set off through the water, for the protected manatee zone. The water was FULL of our sweet sea potatoes... in fact, it was difficult to even get off the boat because our new friends swam right up to the ladder. Nat had given excellent instructions. We immediately leaned into our pool noodles and gently followed her lead through the water. It took just moments before manatees were all around us. We stayed calm and quiet, and they either continued snoozing, or swam up to investigate us. Nat was on point with the camera, and with showing us things like the tarpon and sheepshead fish, and she was also shared little details about the manatees as we floated. Of course, with nature, there are no guarantees, and I really had no idea what to expect, but I was absolutely delighted by the interactions we had. The cold snap absolutely played into our favor, and I am so glad we showed up with our adventurous spirit. When we returned to the boat, there were more snacks, as well as hot cocoa, coffee, tea, and a variety of drinks in the cooler (water, beer, wine, soda, and white claws). We were so grateful for the boat covering and heater as we made our way back to the dock, and we had great chats with Nat, Emerson, and the other group on our tour. Was it cold? Sure. But the water felt great at 72ºF, and our wetsuits did a wonderful job of protecting us and keeping us buoyant. Our experience was incredible, from booking, to engaging with the staff with any questions we had, to the actual tour itself. The photos and videos were absolutely phenomenal, as well, and we were happy to purchase the package, as well as some gifts from the souvenir shop. We will be back for more manatee viewing, or to try one of their other tours. Thank you so much for the best day!

Capt Jimmy and his first mate were stellar and created such a fun experience for my 11 year olds…read morebirthday. The memories that were made were priceless. Alot of really insane moments (huge fish hooks, sharks, sea turtles, birds) and not at all a slow fishing day. I have never needed a break from my arms being so tired from fishing. My son tapped early and we still went home with a cooler full of absolutely delicious fish. Jimmy even gave some recipe ideas for the various catches. I am an avid freshwater angler but my wife and son were not as experienced and they were helped through every process and we all learned so much. It creates an itch to immediately go again so you can implement what you learned sooner in the trip hehe. This is not just a pay to go catch fish charter. I would highly recommend it to anyone from anglers to people that have never touched a pole. My son has talked and talked about it and experiences like this just create better memories and knowledge gained than a theme park could ever.

I came across mellow mangrove charters. I booked online through their website. It was simple and efficient. I immediately received a confirmation email. We arrived to the location at 6:50 AM for the 7 o'clock departure time. Luckily, all the other guests on the boat arrived on time and we were able to leave promptly. Our captain was knowledgeable and very polite. He took us to a location where there were tons of scallops! He gave us all of the necessary instructions to have a wonderfully productive day! We reached our limit of 2 gallons per person and then we were able to enjoy the rest of the time bubbling around in the water. The boat was clean and comfortable.
