    The Silver Spoon

    The Silver Spoon

I love Sunday brunch, but I REALLY love the Sunday brunch here!…read more This past Sunday my sister and I enjoyed some time alone, which is unusual since she's married with children and a very busy working professional, a wife and a mother of three. The kids were with friends, my brother-in-law was in the middle of a project, so we ducked out for a bite. A friend of hers told her about Silver Spoon and its homey, but Manhattan-like, restaurant- like quality food. So, we ventured here for Sunday brunch. Her friend wasn't kidding. Here in this sweet, charming, quaint country-like kitchenette eatery we found a meal that one would find in one of the best brunch spots in Manhattan. Silver Spoon can definitely hold its own against some popular city cafes. I love the way Laurie J describes the cafe. I'll add that the decor is a mix of comfort in a country home-like atmosphere. Black and white checkered tiles, cozy curtains and comfortable red booths are just some of what make this eatery unique. Now the food: Since we arrived one hour before they were to close, we had the place to ourselves. Mom was in the kitchen cooking away while her son was chatting up the diners (which basically included only us). We peeked at the kitchen which is wide and open behind the countertop and register. It looked clean and smelled homey and aromatic of all things breakfasty. Her son suggested the whole grain french toast which was divine. A light crispy crunch on the outside, yet dense and moist on the inside without being too heavy. It was garnished with real maple syrup, fresh fruit and crisp turkey bacon on the side. We also shared a western-like omelette with a cheesey good cheese. (ooops-forgot what cheese). Too busy stuffing my face, chatting with my sister and the waiter. More delicious turkey bacon arrived with this and dense, crisp, perfectly doughy whole grain bread (the only thing not made on the premises). The coffee was very good- forgot to ask what kind of brew. Will find out next time. And, there will be a next time for sure. So, my edits/updates to follow. From eggs, to french toast, to turkey bacon, to fruit, to the bread, all quality, fresh ingredients homemade on the premises superb!! The son (our waiter) informed us that his mom was once a caterer in Manhattan. So, this explains her skillful, creative cooking chops and talent for making her food artistically appealing and caring about her presentation. I want to pick my sister's brain a bit on what other details she would add if writing this review herself. I know I'm missing a few things. So, updates to follow for sure. They gave us courtesy red velvet cupcakes (four of them) on the house and we took them to go. They were very good, flavorful without being saturated in oil or sugar. They also have pies on the premises. Make no mistake that simply because this endearing eatery-this absolutely charming cafe is small that this means typical "small-town" grub. No way. Not here. Not at all!! This is the big league, big time Sunday brunch all the way! I know when I really enjoy a meal because I think about it for days after. I've been thinking about SS since Sunday. I cannot wait to return. *ps. SS offers a dinner tasting menu. good dinner fare from fish to filet mignon. you can call them for the hours of operation for lunch and dinner and for catering functions if interested.

Even though I am a Louis Prima fan (sorry for the obscure reference) the bone to meat ratio just doesn't make up for the higher fat content. At least for me. This guys ribs changed that. You don't eat these ribs so much as you hold them up and allow the meat to dive into your mouth like an Olympian off the 10 meter platform. They are that good. And I have eaten enough brisket in my life that writing a review including a reference to pork is probably something I shouldn't do publicly, but his is top notch. Lastly, I come on this site and often see reviews regarding the personal nature of the proprietor of the business, which are sometimes so vicious and misplaced, it is not a mystery why the writers of South Park want to feed some of the members of this site what they want to feed them. To that end, if you have a problem with either Dan or his staff, I would have to say that the problem is most likely with you. They couldn't be nicer, more courteous and helpful. I know that sounds like a lot for serving somebody BBQ but those fairgrounds on a weekend can be a certified nuthouse. At no time did I see anyone lose their patience or desire to help the customers. Five stars all the way.

I don't remember much of the financial discussions my mom and the manager had prior to the event because I was just a teenager, and in my head I was too busy thinking about my awesome upcoming party. I definitely remember that my mother had to immediately put a large deposit upon making our decision to have the party there though. I thought the fee being so large was odd. Anyways, the manager later on needed a final head count of our guests and we told her 65. We actually invited about 80-90 people and the majority of those who declined their invite didn't actually tell us before we told the manager so we had to guestimate. My mom and I figured that since we requested (verbally) 10 tables with 8 seats per table, it would work out just in case we had a few more than 65 show up. Soooo the day of the party came, I had just arrived with my mom and my aunt, who are both very good at micromanaging everything, and I was content with how the place looked. That feeling lasted for a good two minutes as my mom immediately discovered that the tables had random seating distribution. One table had six, one had 10, one had 8, one had 7, etc. and not like how It was verbally planned. By then the guest list had bumped up to 75 attendees, so my mom and aunt yelled at the staff to fix the tables They did, and I was calm enough to go get ready. Around 3pm, one of the waiters came out with my cake, which had my name, written in icing, literally all botched up! If no one said anything, it would've stayed like that. They fixed that too. Ok. Overall everybody had a good time, the food was good, and the DJ provided a party atmosphere. I heard nothing but good things from friends for weeks. However my mother literally confronted the manager on the phone the next morning about the mismanagement and she ended up getting yelled at and disrespected for being a bad client. We VERBALLY agreed on the seating arrangement despite the head count, and the guests showed up perfectly on time and we didn't give them a hard time in any other category. ****Let me just say that I had the party on a Sunday afternoon. I told the manager it would be at 4:30, but on my invites I purposely changed it to 4:00pm because I KNEW that every single person on my list usually shows up to events at least a half hour late so there would be no wasted time. I was RIGHT!**** Based on reading the other reviews, its good to know that we weren't the only ones with the managing problems and our choice to never go back is still a good one. I hope they change the management soon, otherwise this Yelp page will mark the place as "CLOSED" real soon.
