Ever since the demise of my first Salsateca dance class at Bourne Hall, my salsa friend and I have been searching for a suitable replacement. We hadn't realised how lucky we had been with our Bourne Hall class until we started looking at other options.
Salsateca has started a new class on Friday evenings at Fiesta Havana in the last few months. It seems the perfect marriage with a club specialising in Central/South American culture with a DJ and a dancefloor.
There's a bachata class from 7.30-8.30 with 3 levels of salsa classes after that. At the moment, while they build up a new client base in the area, there are only classes for beginners to intermediate level.
As usual, the thing which draws me back to Salsateca is that the teaching. It's challenging but friendly and not over-serious.
Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of this venue. Unlike the other Salsateca venues I've been to, they don't have exclusive use of the area. As the club's quite small, you often bump into other customers who aren't there for the dance class. The dance floor area is tiny - you can only get 12 couples onto it comfortably. Sadly, I've also experienced some drunken customers trying to disrupt the classes and the bouncers on the door did nothing.
My search goes on for my perfect Friday salsa replacement but it's fun to come for the bachata, which is on earlier in the evening when the place isn't quite as crowded and filled with weekend revellers. read more
