My friend and I were visiting Amsterdam and are huge fans of Chipotle. Although a rather basic meal, it is hands down our favorite "comfort" meal. We moved here 7 months ago from US and this is the closest we have gotten to a Chipotle, Qdoba or Moes. However, they do have some issues they need to fix. I wanted to try their barbacoa but they were out. They were also out of the steak and only had chicken and pork. Owner and head cook really need to keep an eye on this, I am not the first one to comment on the issue and there is no sense in offering something that you don't serve. Staff was friendly but not really knowledgable on the menu or salsas. Weird as this is their main selling point! Now, I do have to say flavor was on point. I ended up ordering the chicken burrito with chips and guac and it was great. The place is nice and big, very comfortable and easy to get to. Owner must pay attention to some of the flaws and he will have a real gem of a place. Will be back, hopefully I will get to try the barbacoa. read more

We were excited to hear about a new 'Mexican' place in town. Seeing Cholula hot sauce in pics was all I needed to know -- I was there in a flash! The menu is set up like Chipotle where you run down the line adding toppings. The tacos are soft mini flour tortilla shells. (I was hoping for corn though.) While cute, the tacos are pretty impractical if you like your toppings. If you are hungry, go for the burrito. The vegetarian option is grilled peppers. I always hope for something more interesting, as it just feels like another topping, but oh well. Note, while they add toppings mostly for free when you get to the guacamole, they might charge you. When I agreed to guac, instead of adding a dallop to the taco, they said they would just put it on the side. On the receipt I noticed it was an extra €2, not so cool. The liquados were tasty -- fresh lime, cucumber/mint options. Nice! They also have fizzy guava and other fruit flavored soda. The chips are just standard bag chips, neither here nor there. The habanero salsa indeed had a good kick. I really do want to like this place more, but there's nothing that I'd really crave to go back for. Definitely as good as it gets in Amsterdam! I moved from Atlanta a few years ago and have been missing good Tex Mex from the moment I landed. There are a few places that do an OK job in Amsterdam, but most seem to fall a little flat - (stale store-bought chips, Gouda as the shredded cheese, weak salsa, overpriced, extremely small location, etc). This place seems like the real deal - delicious fresh guacamole, really nicely flavored meat choices, great hot sauces, big portions with more reasonable prices. The location is nice with plenty of seating. You also build your own burrito, so you can get a good proportion of the ingredients you want. I am totally in love and will be telling everyone I know about this place. Hope to see many more of these pop up around the city! read more

The meat was really soft and all vegetables very fresh. Guacamole like you make it home and you can go with the salad since it will fill you pretty well. Their cucumber mint cooler is so refreshing. A near-exact replica of Chipotle burrito from the US, the owners have no shame in admitting they took the entire concept and used it here. Kudos to them because it's pretty similar. And, for Amsterdam standards, a good burrito. It's almost the same Chipotle experience in terms of ordering and pretty similar in food quality. Their rice is far off, and their beans are just okay, but they do offer a lot of salsa options and they make a pretty good burrito. So far, the top burrito in Amsterdam, which doesn't speak much by US standards, but at least it gets us through our cravings with a satisfied feeling. The layout is very similar to Chipotle's. However, prices are a little higher and portions are a little smaller. If you get veggies instead of meat, you get free guac which is great. The mild and medium salsas are not very spicy and are sweet which is a little weird; I definitely will try the hot salsa instead if I ever return. As a non-American, my taste for Mexican food is pretty standard. I mean, beans, salsa, pulled meats? All pretty standard, wrapped with a generous serving of lettuce, cheese, sour cream and avocado right? Wrong! So much art and drama is involved in Mexican food and the flavours, well, many an American person has bragged about the most tasty burrito ever. But the reality is, in Amsterdam, this might be as good as you're going to get. And you know what? I personally think it's damn good! I've had the pulled pork (my favourite) and the grilled chicken and I've had both as bowls (a deconstructed burrito without the wrap), with lashings of mashed avocado and I've had them both with all the different sauce varieties. We're talking run of the mill, colour not representative of flavours salsa to ohmygod, Ithinkmymouthisonfire hot. All the sauces are great, but be warned that the hot sauce is (actually really effing) hot! This little hot spot has definitely been on the radar considering when it first opened, we were often the only customers sitting around inhaling burritos. Not so any more so I think I'm right in saying, it's not bad burrito for Amsterdam! read more

I was very excited to give this new place a try to see if it could fill the gaping void in my life that has been left by Chipotle since I moved to Europe from America 4 years ago. While the Salsa Shop is following very closely the playbook set forth by places like Chipotle (build-your-own burrito/taco/bowl/salad), they have yet to perfect their execution. I stopped in for lunch to have a burrito and left sufficiently filled with a tortilla, meat, salsa, guacamole and chips, but the journey those ingredients took to my stomach needs improvement. Like other reviewers, I too entered the shop to find they were out of one of the meats (steak) which was being cooked on the stove at that moment. I ordered a chicken burrito, and watched as my server laid a thin layer of rice and chicken (I went without beans) on the tortilla, but then created a mountain of tomatoes, salsa, lettuce and guacamole. To me, the proportions seemed out-of-whack. Next time I'll be asking for more rice and perhaps more meat. I then watched my server struggle to construct the burrito properly around this mountain of ingredients, turning what should be a cylindrical burrito into some amorphous blob barely held together by tinfoil. I'm not sure if this was: A) a lack of experience from the server, B) a problem with the amount of ingredients, or C) a problem with the size of the tortilla. I'm leaning toward a combination of A and B. I also ordered a side of chips and wanted a Dos Equis but I was informed that they had just been stocked and were not cold. But the Pacifico was, so I got that. That's what I get for trying to have beer with lunch ;) The chips suffer from what seems to be a general issue in Amsterdam - there's no good chips to be had. They all are the same yellow, flavorless chips. I have yet to find a place here with really good tortilla chips. The amorphous blob burrito was difficult to eat properly by tearing the foil off and holding it in my hands. Many of the ingredients hadn't made it into the burrito at all, and were between the tortilla and the foil. My lunchmate probably made the wise decision of going after his with a fork and knife. As for the "burrito" itself... the ingredients were good, but the guacamole was far too cold and thus threw off the temperature balance of every bite (there was a LOT of guac on this thing). I never had a warm bite of this burrito despite it being made before my eyes and eaten moments later. I had mine with the base mild salsa, and I would note here also that they were out of salsa verde which I would have had otherwise. The server blamed a local tomatillo shortage. Overall I give this place an A for effort, but a C for execution. IT HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL, and it is so close to my office that I want so bad for the Salsa Shop to improve where it lacks and grow into a kickass burrito and taco shop. As I struggled to eat my cold burrito, I watched a plate of tacos go by and thought, "Yeah I should have ordered that!" Next time. I'll be back. read more

I read comparisons with Chipotle in the US, saw the wonderful pictures of appetizing food and figured I'd cater to my food craving here. Underwhelmed. I have not much positive to say except that the one young lad working at the counter was a nice guy. First off, asking people if they want guacamole in their burrito bowl and as a side and with chips is not the same as telling them that it costs a couple euros for each little serving. I don't even mind it, because it says so clearly on the menu up there, but still. The idea of serving food in a cardboard box isn't a good one, especially when you're dining in. It's far from convenient. The food itself was blander than bland and cold even. It required a generous pouring of chipotle sauce to add some flavor, and no, the mindless of my chosen salsa had not much to do with the flavoring. The chips were subpar, even worse than the wholesome ones you can find at the grocery store. The sour cream wasn't sour enough. Was anyone else super sad when The Taco Shop closed? I was. They had the best damn burritos in town. But then baby Jesus smiled upon us and opened Salsa Shop, and all rejoiced. Uitstekend! Best California/Tex-Mex in Amsterdam. They skimp a bit on the chips, and you have to pay for them, but you won't even need them because their generous portions are super filling. Also, Cholula is the superior hot sauce over Tapatio and I'm glad Salsa Shop knows it. One time, a couple weeks ago, they ran out of carnitas (my favorite) and their pin machine was out of order and they could only take cash (which they're not setup to do). So, here's a story.. I went sightseeing with girlfriends (understand, I am a man), as I was in town and they decided to go shopping. Lucky me, right?! No homo, but OMG it was gooood! The fragrance wasn't the new Chanel for men or whatsoever, it was just, good! Like really good, food.. And boy, did he run fast. "Good food, fast", I'd say. So, this 'bored me' started running too, trying to catch him, because obviously, he had to be part of a good restaurant or something! And then, he stopped. I stopped. The world stopped. There it was. The drop! 'SALSA SHOP', said the sign. I was, intrigued. Mexican food. To be honest with you, I normally don't like Mexican food that much, but boy, did this stuff smell great! So yeah, I ate it. All of it. There's nothing left. Sorry. Ok I'm kidding. I just love it. There's plenty left. All I'm trying to say, the food is just excellent. It's in no way 'fast food'. Not even close! The only thing 'fast' there is how fast you get to eat the meal you have assembled yourself! The meat, I had chicken and steak taco's, and salsas were great. So: 'Man-score: Check'. Was it spicy? I chose the hottest one, so yeah, it was. Check. Was it enough? Yes, although men are never satisfied when stuff is good. But still, check! The staff was nice, looked and more importantly, smelled good. No scratch that. The word I was looking for was 'great'. So, check! CONCLUSION: If you are a man and you're with women on a shopping spree, while being hangry and bored.. Go to SALSA SHOP and EAT! If you're a woman on a shopping spree with a hangry, bored man.. I have to say. This place makes great food, but still inconsistent. I just got back to my office and opened up my burrito bowl to find out it's only about half a normal portion. Compared to all of the other taco and burrito places in Amsterdam, this place SHINES! They've nearly replicated the Chipotle concept (90% there, I'd say); if you're not familiar with the concept, you can completely customize your tacos, burritos, salads, etc. exactly to your liking. I do not think that the flavors have been developed yet to the level of Chipotle, but still super delicious in the context of similar places in Amsterdam and they're new so I expect they'll improve. I like this place! If you're in need of a taco or burrito fix, this is an excellent place to go. They have a variety of fresh ingredients to make your burrito magical, especially the many spicy or sweet salsas on offer. If you're curious what's your taste, they'll let you try them out. The tortillas are not super fresh, but you can't expect much better in Amsterdam. They'll still hit the spot. I tried their barbacoa, which is not quite as tender as I like but tasty nonetheless.
