I was excited to try Mountaineer Tavern, the new restaurant in downtown Boone. Based on the name…read moreand location, I expected another sports bar geared toward App State fans and tourists looking for a quick meal. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. It was much more upscale than I expected while still feeling relaxed and inviting. I was warmly greeted at the door and grabbed a seat at the bar for dinner. The cocktail menu featured fresh ingredients, and after trying two of their signature cocktails, it was clear they were thoughtfully crafted. My favorite was the "Lavender Lemon Drop", served in a chilled martini glass with a fresh lemon slice and lavender sprig. I usually avoid lavender cocktails because they can taste overly floral, but their house made lavender syrup made this one perfectly balanced. I also enjoyed the "Snap Dragon", served over a large ice cube with fresh jalapeno, which was both unique and refreshing. To start, I ordered the tuna tartare, which was on special for the week. It was beautifully presented in a chilled glass bowl over ice, adding a memorable touch. For my entree, I had the Caesar salad with salmon. The pepperoncini added a bright flavor that paired well with the creamy dressing and fresh Parmesan, and the capers (which were not mentioned on the menu) were a pleasant surprise. While the salmon was slightly oversalted, it was cooked perfectly. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend Mountaineer Tavern. Its combination of quality, affordability, and atmosphere makes it just as suitable for a casual family lunch as it is for a date night.

Officially open as of Friday July 3rd! Nice place. Not too…read morebig, not too small. Well laid out. All the interior seems to say quality matters. Nice selection of taps & drinks. Bar stools are way above average. Menu is not extensive but plenty of options. I decided to go simple with the "TAVERN BACON CHEESEBURGER". The flavor of the meat was exceptionally good. The fries were the small Julian cut style (they did NOT seem to have the starch coating) and were excellent (lookout Cardinal). I would definitely order one of these again. Service was attentive (Chayse behind the bar) and the food was out in reasonable time. For their hamburgers, they apparently bring in two kinds of beef and grind the meat in the resturant! I'd say it's worth the effort. And another thing: pepper grinder at the table! Any place that'll bring you a pepper grinder to use at your table while you're eating is a standout. Why everybody doesn't do this I don't know. But once you've gotten used to it it's hard to go back to the stuff that comes in a little metal can from the grocery store that is called ground pepper! Overall, seems that they're off to a great start!

The bartender and staff overall were extremely rude and unwelcoming, and to top it off, the drinks were double the price of what we expected. Definitely not an experience I'd recommend. Save yourself the money and frustration and go somewhere else. Completely ruined our first kids free night for my husband's birthday and our anniversary.

Merle's is an absolute delight! I haven't live in Wilkes in decades but I do visit family from time…read moreto time. When I am in town I always check to see if Merle's is open and try to make it there for a cocktail. Not feeling cocktails they have a section of the menu dedicated to mocktails. Not just a juice or mixer with a dash of bitters either, they've put the same care into developing them that seems to go into the alcoholic cocktails. More of a beer person? Great! Merle's has a handful of NC drafts as well. My first visit to Merle's was in 2023 in April. The cocktails consumed were balanced and well concocted. The use of the space, which I remember visiting when it was an antiques shop 'back in the day', was well used and the patio area quite niece. Every time after when we would visit town my wife and I would try to make it to Merle's, unfortunately we kept lucking out! Recently I was down to help clean out my childhood home and the last day of my visit overlapped with Merle's first day open for the weekend. I decided to swing by and am so glad that I did! Not only were the cocktails wonderful but so was the conversation and camaraderie As an out of town local I was welcomed in and found plenty of conversations to be a part of. I live in Columbus Ohio, where we have a lot of places to get cocktails and the sorts but I will tell you what, Merle's is such an absolutely welcoming gem that I think about visiting even 6.5 hours north! There aren't may things that make me excited to visit or do when I am back home but visiting Merle's sure is one of them! You're guaranteed to find friendly folks, a great drink, and a lovely place to relax.
