Treusdell Salon and Spa is actually several independently owned and operated salons and spas…read moreoperating in the same building with a common reception area. Due to construction and the awful traffic congestion along the route to my regular stylist, I decided to take advantage of a Groupon special and get my hair done closer to home during the holidays. Betty Bahktiar is an excellent colorist and I'm happy with the cut and color. She's warm and friendly, too. I really like her, but I feel that people deserve an honest review, so I'm going to be as objective and honest as I can. The actual price I paid was more than double the Groupon price, even though I had sent her numerous pictures of my hair and what I wanted done. I had purchased full highlights/lowlights for half-off the regular price. However, when I got there, she said it would be another $65 because of what I needed done. I'm a softie sometimes, and I just said okay and paid, but thinking about it now, I decided to mention it in my review. I also felt pressured to get an expensive keratin treatment that I really don't need. It was a pretty hard sell. My hair has been pretty healthy, even though it is highlighted, because I take very good care of it. I've also been under the care of a master stylist who does excellent work. After she finished the highlights and pulled the foils off, Betty said my hair had a lot of damage. Well, it wasn't badly damaged before, so I was surprised and deeply concerned. However, after I got home and gave it a rest for a week, I deep conditioned it and it's much the same as before - silky and strong overall. Any chemical process is hard on hair. I researched keratin and Brazilian Blowout treatments, and I'm so glad I didn't have it done. It turns out that formaldehyde fumes are released during the process, and it's unavoidable - no matter what the product manufacturers say. The formaldehyde is what binds the protein to the hair shaft. For a person with badly impaired lungs (I'm on oxygen all the time), this could have sent me into an exacerbation if not outright respiratory failure. That is per the MSDS sheet on the Brazilian Blowout products. So I immediately cancelled that appointment! One last thing, and this is strictly a pet peeves of mine: I really wish salons would use care in their music selection. Ask the customer if they have a preference. I have pretty broad taste, but some customers don't like rap or today's pop music. Other than that, I don't care. It's irritating to sit for over two hours listening to music that makes you cringe. For that reason, most spas play soft, relaxing music.

I tried a few new stylists at other salons after I moved closer into town, yet when I started working near the airport, I switched to the Alamo Heights location. Hannah's been my stylist for several years now. While I stopped working near the airport years ago, I still drive to get my hair done by Hannah. Now and then I have tried stylists who are closer, yet it wasn't a good fit. Hannah knows my style - feathered highlights and dimension that is subtle and not over the top. As for the cut, she knows I like to keep my hair low-maintenance with ability to curl, wave, or straighten my hair. Her work is consistent. Hannah's super easy to chat with as well, and I appreciate that she asks how my child's doing each time. We both love music and travel, and most of our convos are around those two topics.

I am beyond disappointed with my recent experience with Kersten. I came to her hoping for a…read moresun-kissed highlight look, specifically inspired by pictures I presented to her, and left feeling completely unsatisfied. From the start, I communicated my concerns clearly and politely, expressing that the highlights didn't turn out the way I had hoped. I was told I could come back to have more highlights added, especially on my new growth, and while I was initially willing to give her a second chance, things only went downhill from there. Upon my appointment, I was only charged for the haircut and the products used, with the understanding that I would pay the remaining balance when the job was finished. The next day, however, I received a call from Kersten saying that she felt unable to achieve the results I wanted and suggested I find another stylist. This is completely unprofessional--no experienced or competent stylist would simply give up on a client's request like that. Instead of working with me to fix the issue, she abandoned me with dark roots that were left visible for four inches and avoided highlighting my bangs altogether. The result looked nothing like the blended, sun-kissed highlights I requested; instead, I was left with a harsh, dark rooted look that was far from what I asked for. I have never encountered a stylist so unwilling to correct a mistake, especially when it could have been easily fixed with a few additional highlights. The lack of effort and unwillingness to ensure my satisfaction was beyond frustrating. I would not recommend Kersten to anyone. She should have done everything in her power to make things right, but instead, she left me feeling completely ignored and dissatisfied with my hair. If I could leave 0 star review I would! To make matters worse, even the salon owner Diane failed to take any responsibility for the situation. It is clearly stated in the salon's own policy that if a client is unhappy, they will be given the opportunity to have the issue corrected. That promise was completely disregarded. Despite my efforts to address the problem respectfully and through the proper channels, no one took accountability--not even the person in charge. This is absolutely unacceptable and speaks volumes about the lack of professionalism and customer care within this establishment. To allow an incompetent colorist to botch a service and then do nothing to rectify it is not only unprofessional, it's downright negligent. This entire experience was a nightmare, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone!!

I'm going to use the sandwich technique to describe the services here. My aunt and I came in to get…read moreour nails done. I got a shellac mani, she got a standard mani, and we both got pedicures. On a positive note, the staff is very friendly. Alright, moving on. Unfortunately, we are both very disappointed with the services we received. To be fair, I did not expect a lot of bells and whistles as this is primarily a hair salon, and we were drawn in by the 4 stars and single dollar sign, but I did expect the basics to be done well. First off, there were only two people in the shop which meant they were very rushed, and it seemed that once they did start on us (my aunt had her feet sitting in the tub unattended to for over an hour), they just wanted to throw polish on and get us done as soon as possible. The technician filed my nails after verifying that I wanted them to be squared. However, they were very round and very crooked. Then, she didn't bother to clean them up before applying polish. The edges were very rough and small pieces of nail that were still attached were simply painted over, resulting in a very sloppy-looking paint job. My aunt's manicure looks like it was done by a child having a seizure. The polish is uneven and all over her finger tips and cuticles. Completely cringeworthy. When she complained, the technician simply said, "well that's a hard polish to use." ... What? Are you serious? Attempting to finish on a positive note, they did attempt to fix the things we weren't thrilled with. I emphasize the word attempt. I want to say that they tried really really hard. I really think they did. But the reality is, they just aren't that good at nails. But, I like their massage chair and all the wait time let me catch up on a book I've been meaning to read. So there is that.
