I am not a fickle customer. Once I find a place I like, a true creature of habit I will go back there time and time again, unless something seriously puts me off and I can be bothered to change my routine.
That's why it surprises me that I can actually speak with authority on a good five or six hair salons on the lower north shore. The number it took before I found a place I was comfortable with. Whilst I love a good hair cut and colour, I resent the time it takes. I don't want to be pampered and preened for hours on end, nor to feel the stylist is watching the clock and anxious to get onto the next customer.
Yazbek hits the perfect midpoint for me. Each appointment begins with their 'signature ritual' - inhalation of a minty aromatherapy oil followed by a two or three minute head and shoulder massage. I actually think this should be a pre-everything ritual. It is calming and takes the pace down a notch or two before your treatment. That's the extent of the palaver though - once you're into the colour and cut, it's quick and efficient. I've been at salons that deliver cappuccinos and cookies - even glasses of champagne - but I'd really rather be beautified and get on my way.
