I made an appointment for Saturday morning. The owner texted me Friday night 8:30pm and said:
"Confirming your hair appointment tomorrow Saturday@10:30am." I didn't see the message until after 9pm, being late and being unsure that I needed to respond to a message that says it was confirming my appointment, i decided i would reply in the morning. Unfortunately, i received a text at 6am(not 12 hours after the "confirmation" and only 4 hours before i was scheduled), that said since I hadn't responded, my appointment was cancelled! WTF?! I was a first time customer and was never told that I must confirm my appointment. It seemed like some type of scammy way to cancel clients you've overbooked and blame them. I was all the way turned off by that and so I was cool about the cancellation.
However, later in the week, I still needed my hair done, the yelp reviews still seemed solid and the place is 5 minutes from my home. So, against my better judgment... I made another appointment.
I'm tender headed. Therefore, I untangled my hair before I went in. However, the stylist decided to first wet my hair and then proceeded to crudely rake through it while wet. It hurt! At one point... after lots of flinching, I finally spoke up and asked her to not comb my wet hair. She continued to do so! Mind you, this was not with conditioner or any other product to help with detangling. It was my wet, weak hair vs. raking combing that made no attempt to minimize breakage... either by finger detangling, by holding the roots, nothing!
Then I sat under the dryer with the conditioner and was rinsed again. Then blow dried. Which was more yanking and raking and breakage! Tbh, it was like either having a beauty makeover Day with my high school friend or having my hair done at a white salon that just has no knowledge of black hair care! Both unpleasant experiences!
Then came the flat iron. She seemed to be in quite a hurry. I could feel the sizzle of the flat iron burn my scalp at every pass and i could feel my hair snap at the end when she completed the pass. Lots of flinching through out! At that point, I'd had enough and I actually told her I wanted to pay her and leave with the half done style.
What happened next was that she decided to tell me that because I was deaf and unable to wear my hearing aid to communicate with her... MY lack of communication was responsible somehow for the fact she was burning and breaking my hair and causing me pain to the point that I wanted to leave. If she needs to communicate so desperately to do her job... pull out a pen and paper! Seriously, what do you need to communicate while doing my hair?
Since she told me she was almost done, I decided to let her finish. Miraculously, she was suddenly able to use a flat iron without burning my scalp and ripping my ends. Which she also tried to make my problem... by saying that i needed a trim and that was the reason my hair was snapping so much at the end of the pass. Surprisingly, when she slowed down... the snapping of my ends was no longer an issue! The cool part is that I'd actually made an appointment for a trim, as well... but there was no way I was going to let her near my hair with scissors!! The whole "lack of responsibility " and blaming customers vibe, though ...I just have no tolerance for that!! I can only imagine the reply that will come to this review. If she does reply, read it closely and see what you see "between the lines!"
Honestly, the appointment was a month ago. I forgot all the many things i disliked. But the gist is this: she doesn't know how to care for black hair and doesn't have the patience to give it the TLC it needs and deserves. Don't waste your time or money. And, btw, be prepared to pay more than she quoted on the phone... but blame you...yet again... for not knowing that she charges based on length and thickness of hair. It's just a "No," for me. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more
