While close to home, their hours always made it tough for me to get to after work, even though Anna and Crop would stay late for me. One day we received a call that Anna was leaving for Ivy House. This turned out to be great for us as my wife works literally around the corner and I work 10 minutes away. I can go for a cut after work or during the day without having to travel an hour roundtrip. About the salon...it's tucked up away at the hard corner on Main Street in Jamestown. It's right by the tracks and old freight depot. When I first started going, they had 1 unit. Now they have expanded to two. There is always coffee, tea, soft drinks, beer, and wine for clients. The place is spotless and meticulously kept. All the stylists are serious pros. Their product selection is strong. Are they the least expensive? Not at all. But each stylist is priced based on experience, cut, process, color, etc. Book way in advance as they are always busy but their hours allow you the time to get the right style at the right time.

While I understand that appointments in the hair industry can occasionally run overtime, the…read morecomplete lack of professional communication at this salon is unacceptable. When the staff runs late, they fail to acknowledge arriving clients or offer a basic apology for a long wait, instead they became defensive and accusative, and somewhat abrasive. The two stylists joined forces against me calling me names and have acted haughty because I did not understand the way the hair industry works. I have been going to hair salons for decades, of course, I know how it works, but I never experienced the lack of communication and apology for the long wait. They were very defensive and dismissive instead of valuing the clients' time. Industry standards do not excuse basic discourtesy or rudeness. I went there because they do good work, but their customer service is sorely lacking. It is unfortunate it ended up this way.

I should have left as soon as she began combing my hair (my afro) dry. I have very kinky hair, and Sheila was especially rough and it even hurt. Didn't section it or anything. Just combed through it and pulled and tugged and ripped at it. In retrospect, I certainly should have said something. I believe she used way too much heat on my hair (a hot comb on my edges??), she said she would trim it ("half an inch"), but ended up giving me layers without my consent and even my mother noticed how noticeably shorter it was. I'm all for health over length, but don't give me something I didn't agree to. She nipped my ear and got my the scalp around my edges with the flat iron, so when I got back home, it was sore and red. Not only that, but I left with so much dry skin on my scalp as well. So it's basically like I went through all that just for my hair to be dirty, and it's more apparent because my hair is dark, and now, straight. I don't believe she knew how to handle my kinky, Type 4 hair, because if so, she would have known that my hair type needs to be handled gently. I have been to places who give the utmost TLC to my tresses, so I was truly appalled with the way she handled my hair. My hair is thick, but it is very fine and prone to breakage, so obviously being rough with it will only exacerbate my issues. Asides from that, she was nice, and I (hopefully) don't think I suffered any heat damage, by the grace of God. Totally dissatisfied and disappointed and this is honestly the reason I won't be visiting a salon anytime soon.
