July 18, 2026. Denver, NC YMCA facility at around 11:30 AM.
My 38-year-old adult son has Down syndrome and cannot care for himself. I am his mother and legal guardian. I work for Hospital, and my son attends a day program from Monday through Friday. Because of our schedules, Saturday is the only day he can visit the YMCA, and this happens to be my weekend off.
When I approached the front counter, the elderly lady working there informed me that I had to pay a $20.00 guest fee because we do not have an active membership. I had absolutely no problem paying that fee, as I cannot leave my son alone and wanted him to enjoy the facility. However, she then told me that we could not enter because guest access was only allowed from Monday through Friday.
At that moment, another staff member intervened and told her that we were allowed to enter. Despite this correction from her colleague, the lady insisted again that we could not enter. Feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable, I decided to leave.
We then drove to the Lincolnton YMCA, where I explained the situation to the staff there. They were incredibly helpful, but they also could not understand why the lady in Denver denied us access.
I need a clear explanation regarding the guest policy. Furthermore, I strongly believe your staff needs better training and sensitivity when dealing with individuals with special needs. My son does not understand why he was rejected, and it is heartbreaking. I expect a prompt response regarding how this situation will be addressed. read more
