Poor experience with selling. Brought multiple items in for review. Their website states they will access and get back to you to see if you want to consign or a buyout. After dropping off, no one reached out to discuss options. After reaching out multiple times I was told John would get back to me. Crickets. Then I was told there was a check for $225 waiting for me. I never agreed to a buyout, but apparently that's what they decided. I continually had to request updates. In the end my Waterford Lamp was valued at $90, though listed on the auction site at $575. All the items I brought in were valued at a fraction of what they listed. I expected a 60/40 split. Nope. John couldn't take time out of his busy schedule to professionally present my options.The communication was so poor, I had to continually send emails asking for status as well as text to John that were basically dismissed. So incredibly disappointed and also feel ripped off. But worse, I don't think they care. Do yourself a favor and go to The Velvet Shoestring. Everything they price is too high! Their recent sale has $20 paper weights. Really?

The most unprofessional business I've ever dealt with. It appears that this is more of a hobby/side business rather than a serious profession, as the owner does not take his professionalism nor customer satisfaction seriously. My father passed away last July of 2022 and we were referred to Sales By Helen to help us with removing unwanted items as well as sell some special antiques in our home. The employees left our driveway a mess during the removal and denied doing so although we had picture and footage evidence. John also failed to provide an accessible itemized list of the items that were taken from our home. We even had to ask them to tell us what they had taken after the fact, rather than them reaching out first. Months later the owner is still refusing to provide a list of the items taken, and has now blocked my number. I have sincere worries for those who trust this business with their valuables and relatives' prized antique possessions, as they do not value the people they are coming from, nor do they believe in treating them with respect. Their business is based on taking advantage of people that need to get rid of their homes and up charging their belongings by a ridiculous amount. read more

This business appears to be professional as their social media and internet presence is strong. I was not impressed with how they conduct their estate sales in person. It is run by a mother (Helen) and her son. Thee is no organization or instruction/directions on how the sale is conducted. If you are not part of the regular followers/customers, they are very unhelpful and rude. Several elderly people had to walk quite a distance with cane/walkers because the driveway was blocked off. This is clearly a violation of the ADA. As for the sale and pricing, most of the items were over priced. The son would reduce prices in the spot for the regular/frequent customers who knew them by name. Other people were to that the price is the price. It's a scam. This company is exceedingly greedy and has the worst costumer service I've ever witnessed. They advertised a sale from 10am 2pm today and upon entering the estate at 1:05 one of the workers barked at me sales over were closed. Then she said I could walk around. More people came in and she was equally rude and unfriendly with no apology etc. I've been to a few others and have to agree things are way overpriced. Stay away. read more

We went to our first estate sale in the area. I am very, very familiar with the whole estate sale industry. That being said, I was very curious about this particular estate sales company as I had read it was one of the best in the Philadelphia area. The house where the estate sale was held was a lovely historic home, so I had great expectations for what might be inside! Before we entered the home, I noticed some shabby (and not in a good way) old tables that were outrageously priced...like truly outrageous. That should have been the tip off. Upon entering the home, the lady who greeted us as the check out was friendly enough. As we walked through the rooms, I noticed there really wasn't much of anything there. It was like everything had been cherry picked. It was more or less an antiques store. And the prices? I doubt any antiques store in NYC would have anything on them. That really takes the fun out of sales, in my opinion. I mean, I certainly don't expect anyone to give the stuff away, but this was ridiculous. Estate sales are fun for everyone involved when you feel like you might find a treasure for a good deal! Even not old at all license plates were going for a ridiculous price. My wife and I have been dealing with Helen and the crew for over 3 years, they are a really great group of people. After going thru a divorce and loosing a house it was time to start over. Thanks to Helen we were able to furnish our new house without going into debt. Much of our furnishings are good quality construction with a lot of life left. The only drawback is we would let them know what we were looking for and they would let us know if what we wanted was coming up soon. Other times, if there was something we were on the fence about she would give us a price that was too good to refuse. We have observed over the years that they take in to consideration everyone's needs, client & customer with the utmost discretion & honesty. Unfortunately my dealing with this company wasn't positive at all. I think they are out for the highest buck no matter what. I found my interaction to be very unprofessional as well. Too many other great estate sale organizers out there to bother again with this group, I wish I could give it 0 stars. You see the other reviews are telling. The ones that attend these sales all have negative things to say, but those having the sale are happy as a clam. That speaks volumes. Sad to read out of only 7 reviews more than half are lousy. I received amazing service from John and the crew at Sales by Helen. I had to manage the disposal and sale of my mother's house in Philadelphia -- the house I grew up in -- remotely from NYC. Several people recommended Sales by Helen to me independently, so I engaged them to do an estate sale and the house cleanout before turning over to the buyers. They took care of absolutely everything, with friendliness and great efficiency. You name it, they had seen it before and they took care of it. They turned what could have been an enormously difficult, time-consuming, and painful process into a breeze. They have a great social media-driven marketing machine, which they can "crank up" to people to turn out for the estate sale in droves. They also contact specialists for certain types of items (such as automobiles and artwork) to set prices and find buyers. They can handle issues such as transporting large items (e.g. my mother's grand piano) and dealing with auto title transfers. They were very responsive and helpful. I cannot overstate how much time and aggravation they saved me in this process. They charge a hefty commission but it is absolutely worth every penny. I highly recommend them. read more

In summary: a very expensive yard sale; unrealistic prices (and they are firm) for second hand goods. Don't go expecting to negotiate and don't go expecting a bargain either. Quality of items is over estimated and significantly over priced, but I said that already. The better items either go with the owner(s) or to auction. The staff is thoroughly rude. We sold our home on February 14th with a contingency to be vacated by March 14th. How to sell 30 years of accumulation in a 5 BR home? SALES BY HELEN was contacted, they promptly came out and assessed all our furnishings. We identified what we wanted to take with us and they identified from the remaining items what they were confident could be sold at estate sale, via online or even thru E-Bay accounts. The interaction with the assessor for furniture to the assessor of accessories (china, silverware, lamps, decorations, etc.) to the movers who cleared out all of the items selected was professional, definitive and courteous considering the "rush" we needed. The best part of our association with Sales by Helen was the result. By the end of March ALL items selected were sold and we received a check for our share of the proceeds during the following week. We are able to enthusiastically recommend this organization. Alleviating the stress of disposing so much "stuff," as well as the confidence in the team and peace of mind is priceless. read more
