When thinking about my family member's recent recovery at the Salem Transition Care (STC), many things come to mind, such as....
Long waits to be taken to the bathroom - especially when no one is at the nursing station to respond to your button being pressed. Not to mention that you're about to wet your pants! They DO NOT allow residents to get up and go to the bathroom. So you will wait and wait and wait.... Then you may wait a bit longer!
Upon reading your Discharge Papers, you could learn that STC reported to your insurance company that you've been diagnosed with kidney failure, respiratory failure, and cardiac failure - None of which were accurately reported, nor have they been ever diagnosed by your personal doctor! How did that happen?
You may also learn that the medical director of the Salem Transitional Care has been designated as your "primary" doctor! How would that happen? That's a question we asked but can't seem to get an answer to, and likely never will.
Whether or not you have a family member who supports you, that area of your discharge form will possibly show that YOU are your own support person... and not in 1 place, but in 2 places! Please explain how YOU can be your own support person? That's impossible, especially when your loved one stops by to see you at least once daily!
And if that isn't bad enough.... Know that the STC staff will review your Salem Hospital records (if you were transferred from there) and they will use any piece of that information in their monthly treatment report. However, STC did NOT perform any of the procedures for that information - which they "copied" into their report. Unless I'm wrong, they call that plagiarism (or even lying!). As we know, Medicare emphasizes that it's a federal offense to state that a procedure was provided, when it was not.
You WILL sit excessively in your wheelchair (or maybe your bed) for the better part of your waking day. This doesn't include going to the bathroom or taking part in physical therapy. Meals may be in a central area, or you may remain in your room for those periods too! Residents have minimal exercise, mental stimulation, and even less interactions with others. But there is a nice TV in each room, and you WILL learn which Comcast channels you can watch while you're there!
Speaking of communications.... There will be ZERO communication by the STC doctor with your family member! Even if they have your name and phone number in the TSC system.... The doctor will never call you.
Speaking of your family.... They will find it VERY HARD to get information updates regarding your progress, not to mention any challenges you're faced with. If you ask a question, they will bring you a printout from the system, which may (or may not) answer your question. Talking with the doctor in charge of STC is hard, because "Dr. Clark" is only in the Salem rehab facility on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. My family member was in STC for 38 days and only met with Dr. Clark two times! The rest of the time, various nurses and therapists were her regular "medical" contacts.
A recovery center is supposed to be the final step of your rehabilitation, and the team should focus on improving a person's physical life and mental well-being. But STC doesn't hold that belief! Their primary focus is to do things for the least cost, thus keeping their expenses as low as possible. This results in COST SAVINGS for Avemere, which leads to increased revenues for Avemere!
If you are considering Avemere's Salem Transitional Care Rehabilitation for your loved one, please look elsewhere. They only look at the bottom line, and you should NOT go there! Neither should your loved one.... read more
