Strawberry cake
Emma W.

Cute little store with a few fresh food items! The cake was super cute and the perfect sweetness. The strawberries were very red & juicy too! It was just a bit small :,)

Salmon bento box ($11) - 3.5 stars. Just the right amount of food, tasty and healthy. Salmon a tad overcooked/dry. 2024-03-20 Wed lunch

Very cute little store with tasty bento boxes with just the right amount of food. Only $11 for a box with salmon, some veggies, and tofu. All was pretty tasty, but the Salmon was a tad overcooked/dry. The store is bare bones but also a cute spot with food and gifts. I hear that the bento boxes run out pretty quickly, usually by noon.

I've walked by this Japanese gift shop many times, but honestly, I was never motivated to stop by until recently when I heard through the social grapevine that they were selling packaged housemade food. In particular, I heard they had sandoitchi, Japanese-style sandwiches, just like a Family Mart or Lawson's in Japan. They had closed to renovate the space into more of a grocery store. When I heard they finally reopened as a convenience market, I was so there. Now it didn't really turn into a Family Mart. That would've been wonderful, but they now have a refrigerated section with quite a packaged food collection. Prices were quite reasonable, so I scooped up my lunch to take into Golden Gate Park where I found a quiet bench in the AIDS Memorial Grove. I bought the $8.50 Egg and Pork Katsu Mix Sando which had egg salad on one side of the sandwich and on the other, a huge pork katsu with shredded cabbage and tonkatsu sauce (photo: https://bit.ly/45B7HSi). They used Japanese milk bread which lent it the authentic soft texture I was expecting. I also treated myself to the $5.50 Mitarashi Dango, three skewers of glutinous rice balls (photo: https://bit.ly/45B7Jto). They were covered in a sweet soy sauce glaze. It was all good stuff, quite welcome - though I prefer the more streamlined style of Japanese native sandoitchi, and while I like egg salad, tamagoyaki would've been nice. Still, when I closed my eyes, I felt I was next to the big pond in Ueno Park on a brisk day. But then I opened them and saw a homeless man urinating in the bushes. Welcome to San Francisco. FOOD - 4 stars....good sando and dango, made me want to catch the Shinkansen AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...looked like they're still organizing things, no cafe seating SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...good to know I now have a source for sando RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? grand opening week only
second panda I got for $5!
Chloe C.

Sakura recently had a grand opening and kinda changed to more of a japanese convenient store. during grand opening week, they had a TON of sales! A bunch of plushies on sale for $5 - I got two cute pandas! I went back the other day and it looks like they're all sold out. I am excited to try their food though - i've only tried their salmon onigiri so far and it was ok. A bit dry for my liking and too much rice, but they seem to have a pretty good size of selection for other foods that I'm excited to try in the future. They do sell out fast on some days so try to go early for fresh food. // edit 8/23/23 came back again to Sakura to try out more food items. Got their (1) chicken katsu sando (2) strawberry sando (3) onigiri again Chicken katsu - a bit disappointing; chicken was relatively dry and overall flavor kinda bland Strawberry sando - cream was super good, bread was dry, wish it had more strawberries because I think the whole sando only had about 4 strawberries Onigiri - was ok; i've had it before. see my onigiri review in the 3rd paragraph.

These cars are a collection of preserved vehicles from the '30s to '50s. Each one was given from a city in the US. They were originally brought to San Francisco to substitute for the cable cars when the c.c. Went under major renovation back in the '80s. The street cars became a hit with locals and tourists and are now a part of historic transit systems in San Francisco. The museum is small but detailed. It is open limited hours and run by a team of volunteers. They are passionate about these street cars and it shows. They are very detailed oriented but expect a pause every 10 minutes when a street car goes rolling by. The museum is free with a suggested $5 donation. It will only take about 30 minutes to cover it but a great stop if a rail fan.

There are so many amazing exhibits here but let me tell you about my favorite one. It was an exhibit in a gallery dedicated to explaining and demonstrating how AI works and how it can be used. We were asked to make a drawing of anything, anything at all. I drew a house and a cat. Then we were asked to pick a musical style -rock, hip-hop, blues, kiddie songs, techno or whatever. That was all it took for the machine to take off into cyberspace. The AI gears whirred away and out came a song combining our drawings and chosen musical genre. Who knew a rocking rock song about houses and cats could be so great? They have six galleries with hands-on kid friendly exhibits covering math, illusions, technology, electricity, magnetism, biology, cell structure, light and color, sound, and social science. There are demonstrations scheduled throughout the day in these galleries, on topics including magic, lasers, biology, botany, and weather. So, if you've ever dreamed about seeing a cow's eyeball get dissected, well,,,, you're in luck because a cow's peeper gets dissected five times a day for your viewing pleasure. The Exploratorium was jam packed with kids having the time of their life exploring the wonders of our world. This big kid had a blast as well.

Nothing mind-blowing but fun. The planetarium was a bit underwhelming but still cool if you actually get to go inside and see a show. The exhibits were fun, educational and cool. The aquarium was also super cool. Lots of fun aquatic life to explore and experience. However, and this really is my only complaint; please, please, please be careful in the 360 view of the fish exhibit. We had to leave the museum early and end our entire day due to a head injury that I went through while exiting the tunnel that leads into the 360 view. I didn't see any signs that warned of the possibility of injuring yourself if you're not a small child. I used my better judgement but unfortunately, it's dark in there and I stood up prematurely. With all my strength I stood up, head first straight into the hard ceiling above my head and suffered a mild concussion. But, it really is up to the customers discretion to be cautious and aware of your surroundings. I don't blame the museum. That being said, there should be signs everywhere. Someone could seriously get hurt. Luckily, I'm fine and definitely recommend this place!
