I visited Shelter Ministries Thrift Shop today, and what a disaster. NOTHING had prices on it. I…read moreasked a volunteer about the prices, and she tried to help but said she wasn't sure because she was new. I understand being new, but items should absolutely be priced so customers don't have to guess. Another thing I noticed while looking around is how extremely small the shopping area is. The building itself is huge, and I know the entire layout because I've been there before it became a thrift store and food pantry. It's surprising that such a tiny portion is actually used for the store. Now let's talk about the pricing. Pants are $5.00 each -- for used pants. Shirts and pajamas are $3.00. Kids clothes are $3-$5 depending on what you pick. Socks are $1.00 a pair... for used socks! And then there are the used undergarments. VERY used underwear and bras are $3.00 EACH. Used. Most of them showed extreme wear. That's honestly shocking. The store itself is extremely disorganized. Nothing makes any sense and there is no clear system to how things are arranged. Items are placed everywhere with no rhyme or reason. It's so cramped and packed that only one person can comfortably shop in an area at a time. Another thing that really bothered me: while I was there, four volunteers were going through donated items and setting certain things off to the side that they were planning to take home. So if you donate to this thrift shop thinking everything will go back to the community, just know that some items appear to be getting picked through first. Overall, the place felt chaotic, overpriced for the condition of items, and poorly organized. It really needs better pricing, better organization, and much better use of the large space available.

Currently, the owners are bringing out items from an estate sale. I talked with the owner and learned that there is a Facebook page. Items are posted regularly for shoppers to comment "sold," then pick up and purchase in the next few days before it is returned to inventory. Part museum-like or like walking into my elderly parents' home, I enjoyed looking around. A lot of items are newer, so they're usable or wearable. Many items are for display or for your collective passion. Inventory depends are items the owners find. I purchased new scarves/gloves, pair of new shoes, a few rag rugs that washed nicely, and a Snow Baby figurine. There was a large collection of them. Shipping with postage is available. The shop is handicapped accessible, and a parking spot is at the door. If you're into resale, check it out.

I have visited Baldy's a few times just to look, and I was allowed to look without pressure…read more Recently we shopped for a mattress intending to look at several different places before buying. Our first stop was Baldy's Furniture in Wauseon, OH. We were greeted when we walked in, allowed to explore the store with no pressure. While we tried different mattresses, a salesman checked on us, not too often, not too little, then when we made out decision, our salesman was nearby, easy to find and we completed our transaction. We had the mattress delivered a few days later. On the day morning the mattress was to be delivered, I received a call that they were short a deliveryman, so my mattress would be delivered in the afternoon. The caller was relieved I was not upset, (I know things happen), and apologetic. Early that afternoon, I received a call they were on their way and would be there in half an hour. They were right on time. Good Customer Service, GOOD communication, good quality furniture and a very fair price. I HIGHLY recommend Baldy's Furniture!

It's a long drive from my home so I visit this quilt shop only once a year when I carpool with…read morefriends to attend the Sauder Village quilt show during the first week of May each year. The shop shares a large building with a historical museum. The little village that surrounds the quilt shop is very scenic, with beautiful gardens and cute little shops. There are old time, down home country cooking type restaurants on site, so you can get lunch before you head home. One is a sit-down restaurant outside the village, another is a cafeteria inside the village. Threads of Tradition has a lot of notions, single quilt patterns, pattern books and--of course--fabric of all genres, from historical reproductions all the way up to modern. The prices on the fabric were usually very, very good in the past. They seemed lower than my area of Michigan. I used to wonder how they could do it, and figured it was due to a high volume of shoppers. Now that cotton prices are through the roof, it's hard to gauge. The prices seemed to be actually a bit higher than the shops I frequent in Michigan. At Threads of Tradition, fat quarters were priced at $3.25 today, while they're $2.75 in my part of Michigan. Still worth a visit.

Tails is located in a convenient spot downtown with good parking spaces all around it. It's easy to pop inside take a peek (or stay for an hour) and go shop at another store, like the Paper Gourmet about 20 feet away. Tails is open Monday-Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 10am-2:00pm. Real hours! Not bad for an all-volunteer business. They have a fairly wide selection (which means for any book lover it's hard to leave empty-handed). Lots of Scholastic books for kids. Some military history. Recent NY Times bestsellers, too. Many of the books are in new condition and so you can even do your Christmas shopping here. Some books definitely are not pristine, but that's okay. There are suggested donation prices posted (that even Amazon can't beat) and if you're feeling generous tell them to "keep the change" and know that the dogs and cats will really appreciate your generosity. If you're a bibliophile looking for a fun, friendly volunteer opportunity, this is it. Apply within. Do you have books you no longer want? Hard for some of us to believe, but if you need to re-home some of your literary friends then please consider donating them to Tails. I had been donating mine to the library, but now most of them go to Tails (sorry EPL). They will take books as well as magazines. Drop them off and enjoy the good feeling you get from sharing them with others. It does have one downside, for me. Given the recent renovation inside the building, the place off-gases like crazy. I'm hopeful that as time goes on it will resolve itself, but please use no VOC-paint and finish next time guys (who I realize are not affiliated with Tails, so let's not take it out on them). Overall, it's a cozy book nook that you can peacefully enjoy and even make new friends. The volunteers that I've met have all been sweet, kind, and very helpful. Auburn is blessed to have this spot open up. Oh, if only it stays here!!

I was so impressed with the experience that, while I don't often buy children's clothing, I will ALWAYS check out Little Sprouts before I go anywhere else! Rose, the woman working the evening I went, greeted me the second I walked through the door, and then never left my side! I had lots of questions about children's sizes and what their mother would appreciate (for instance, should I steer clear of white?). Rose answered all of my questions, using both her own experience as a mother and anecdotes from other customers. After asking about my price range and seeing pictures of both girls, Rose began grabbing outfits from all over the place...she even pulled outfits off of displays for me to look at. She did a fantastic job of showing me enough options to explore a variety, but not so much that I became overwhelmed. Once we settled on outfits, she rang me up and walked me to the door. We actually stood there and had a nice conversation...and I commented that I would definitely be back when it was time for more children's clothing. About this time, I realized that I had kept her well past closing time, and promptly apologized. Rose laughed, and told me it was no problem...I had questions, and she was more than happy to take the time to help! I will definitely be going back!
