Is it all you can eat?

Yes, but with their all you can eat you cannot customize anything you order and you're expected to eat everything on the plate before getting a new order. Anything left over that gets wasted you have to pay for. Say you ordered the chicken teriyaki,…

Stopped in for lunch while on a day trip to SLO. It's in the back of the creamery complex, we had a…read moreslight problem finding it. There is handicap parking (and other parking) right outside the door in the lot off Nipomo St. We arrived before noon and it was already filling up, we sat at the sushi bar. Ordered a range of things - broiled mackerel, a natto hand roll, their Hamapenõ roll and a vegetable roll. I guess they don't get too many natto orders because a nice woman came over to me to ask me if I knew what natto was, which made me laugh. I wouldn't recommend anyone take a big bite of natto if they aren't familiar (it's unusual to American palates, but I love it). It would be kind of like taking a big bite of blue cheese if you've never had it before. You don't see broiled mackerel in many American restaurants (I don't see many American based Izakayas outside of Honolulu)- it's a strong tasting fish, this mackerel was delicious and well prepared. They also have hamachi and salmon collars, which I'll try on another visit. I like vegetable rolls, but in most places they're not executed very well. This was an outstanding vegetable roll - nice crunch on the vegetables, great assortment. The hamapenõ roll was next level good. Not too spicy, but a fantastic range of flavors and textures - including ponzu jelly on the top, which was savory and sweet simultaneously and a perfect foil for the rest of the roll. There was a lunch menu which would cut down on the cost - and you should also scan the code to see the daily specials. I missed that until I was finished. Unfortunately for me, I did not order my spare stomach from Amazon in time for that meal. It's a three- hour round trip for us, but we will come back because it's that good - and it's a pleasant drive from Santa Barbara. SLO itself is nice too. Service was kind and attentive, the restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. A+. FWIW, nobody asked me to write a review, and I did not tell them I was Yelp elite.

To eat I had the Kanpai Boat for which comes with miso soup, cucumber salad, rice or salad, 10 pc nigiri, 2 or 1 roll(s) of your choice, and 8 pc tataki or sashimi. Everything I had was fresh and was good quality. For $48 (minus tip and tax), this was such a steal! They sat me at a sushi bar with other solo diners. Everything was clean and I had enough room for my sushi boat. The service here was also really good. Overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone visiting SLO looking for good quality sushi at good prices.

Flare's menu was extensive and I wish we had more people to order a bit of everything and share it family style! We got the Beef Boiling Pot and WOW. The broth was so flavorful and deep. Very well seasoned! The Korean Fried Chicken wings also had a satisfying crunch and the flavors were also on point! We got the half and half, and the Original flavor was my favorite. The other half was plain, but I still enjoyed it. Super juicy and tender! For dessert, I got the Brown Sugar Milk Tea w/ Honey Boba. The boba was soft and slightly chewy, which is exactly how I prefer it! I'm bummed I'm not a local, because this would easily become a go-to spot!

Wow! The flavors at Flare blew us away…read more My hubby and I were looking for a new place to try for our date night. I remembered the opening soon signs for Flare when we used to live by Ryon Park. Since we moved, I'd almost forgotten so I was excited to finally try their food. The staff that greeted and tended to us were friendly and attentive. The atmosphere has a hole-in-the-wall vibe with its intimate seating. The back tables have glowing lights like stars which was a nice touch. That being said, I feel like the interior could use some more color. Maybe some Japanese or Korean art would be cool. We started out with some milk tea. I ordered the tiger milk tea which was sweet with caramel and I added honey Boba. For the food, they have hot pots! A unique offering for the Lompoc area. The food at Flare is mostly Korean and Japanese inspired food with some California influences. Like the beef Bulgogi fries my husband ordered-- were bomb. They came with a spicy mayo like sauce that was a savory and sweet suprise. The saltiness of the beef and melted cheese-- ultimate comfort food. It would've been even better with avocado. I ordered a fusion rice bowl. At first I was skeptical about the sauce the shrimp came with. But after the first bite my mouth was bursting with flavor. Freshness from the sour cream mixed perfectly with the mildly spicy red sauce dressing the shrimp (no tails which I appreciated). Little bits of cilantro mixed into the warm jasmine rice balanced out the salty and savory shrimp. Add in the freshness of the crisp lettuce, pico de gallo and corn. Overall, it created a beautiful balanced dish I didn't know I needed; a meal that satisfied my soul. Next time we come I can't wait to try their hot pots! Highly recommend you check out Flare.
