This is probably one of my favorite sights in all of Paris. The first time I went inside, I had no problems. Just walked straight through security and into the church. It's just breathtaking. A must see. You can read about all the pictures in the stained glass. Each section tells a story in the bible. I still like this place better than Notre Dame. It's smaller, more intimate and just so beautiful. My friends had never heard of it and they had no interest in seeing it so I went alone my first time. It ended up being the best thing I saw the whole trip. A couple of tips: go in the morning right when it opens on a sunny day. The line to get in gets extremely long if you aren't there early. Security can take forever. I probably waited an hour in line when I arrived on my second visit because I arrived at 11:30. If you go at noon, the sun may wash out the colors of the stained glass and it looks more white so it's not at its best. Wouldn't recommend that time. Another thing - part of it is under construction so you won't get the full 360 view. Not sure if it's still under construction but I think it will be for a little while. read more

One of the top houses of worship in the world. We saw it an entirely different way. Thru out the year they do (classical) concerts in the church where you can buy a ticket for a reasonable cost (30-40 euros) and have 2 hours of time to sit in a chair and gaze at all the windows as long as you wish. Classictics.com is one website that has the concerts listed in Paris. We listened to Bach choral works while the sun was setting in the west behind the windows flooding the space with light and sound. read more

This is a must visit in Paris especially given it's proximity to Notre Dame which is probably in your "to-do" list in Paris anyway. It's far smaller but at the same time a lot less crowded (still had to wait in line for 20minutes in January thanks to having to walk through a metal detector à la airport security). It does suck a little that entrance is not free but it's highly worth it for inside this gothic church is Paris's oldest stained glass in a Church and boy is it breath taking. Try to make it here on a day that the sun is out to get a full effect of what the sunlight can do to the glasses. Like others have mentioned here the glasses all chronicle stories and while it's not very easy to follow them thanks to the height the windows go up to it is still entertaining viewing them looking for the story. This church is just another reason why Paris is such a joy to experience and is sure to give you some great looking pictures for your travel album! read more

European citizenship has its perks, people - 18 to 25 year olds with a Euro ID get in for free, but you still have to get a ticket from the ticket kiosk, unlike what I experienced at the Louvre. read more

I find rich churches exploitatively built by worldly leaders to further their political ambitions (read the history of the Sainte-Chapelle) a complete contradiction of Jesus's teachings. In this case, it is even more perplexing that the chapel's royal builder, who participated in murderous crusades, was later canonized! However, as a museum, it is beautiful - an example of gothic architecture approaching its most flamboyant period. As a venue for chamber concerts, it is magical. read more

Sure, you need to make a stop at Notre Dame.... but don't even think about missing out on Sainte-Chapelle. For as dark and heavy as ND is, SC is bright and light in comparison. The stained glass is just beautiful. I don't have the ability to describe it in a way that would do it justice. Make sure to grab an information pamphlet. It will help you with deciphering all of the beautiful stained glass. SIDE NOTE: I decided to take a small pair of binoculars on my trip. When it came to checking out the churches, it helped immensely. While many were straining to make out figures, I was getting an up close view of the master works. Highly recommend!! read more

Sainte-Chapelle is part of the Palace of Justice which also includes the bloody past of the Conciergerie. Sainte Chapelle was built to house the relics of the Passion of Christ. The upper chapel is home to the most beautiful stained glass depicting biblical stories. You will be speechless when you take in the beauty of Sainte Chapelle. The windows are useless and unpractical because you can't see through them and they're literally all over the walls. The in-between parts of the pictures on the windows are made of lead so don't eat them. All jokes aside go to this place it's pretty neat. read more

You will gasp when you enter this breathtaking building. I promise! But, the best part is yet to come when you walk up the staircase! The walls are almost entirely made of beautiful stained glass. Make sure your camera is charged and also, lie down on the floor and take a photo of the ceiling. To me, Sainte-Chapelle is an absolute must-see when in Paris. It is absolutely stunning! Several reviewers mentioned being able to skip the line with a Museum Pass. Not sure if that was the case in the past, but it is definitely NOT the case now. In fact, while you can skip most lines with the Museum Pass, Sainte-Chapelle is a clearly-stated exception. So yeah. You've got to wait 20-30 minutes to see the stained glass. But it's definitely worth it (provided you're a fan of stained glass or beautiful things in general). My curiosity is definitely stoked regarding the concerts that several reviewers mentioned. Sounds like a treat! ps - Some reviewers mentioned trying to skip the 'tourist' line by going into the shorter 'official court business' line. I suppose that might work, especially if you speak French. Or it could backfire and you could be given a stern reprimand and sent to the back of the tourist line. Either way, it's pretty lame (IMHO) to pretend to be a local on court business so that you can jump ahead of the people who are patiently waiting their turn on the tourist line. Oh, funny story on the security check -- one guard ran after my wife and made her open her makeup case so that he could examine the tool -- not sure what it's called - that ladies use to primp their eyelashes. Apparently, he was worried it was some sort of potential stained-glass-destroying tool. I think his colleagues gave him a good ribbing over this overzealous screening. read more

More beautiful than i could have imagined. We walked a little early and found our way to the Sainte-Chapelle before the crowds. After a security check we were allowed to go through the courtyard into the actual church. There is only one part of this church the stained glass:) after walking up the spiral staircase you enter the main room of the cathedral. There are 15 windows (roman numeral numbered) each window tells a story grab a flyer which will tell you exactly what you are looking at (they have most major languages). The flyer gives a brief tutorial on how stained glass is made and some of the churches history. You could literally spend hours there but once you get the photos you want migrate downstairs. This was probably the best 8 euro i spend while in Paris this week. read more

When you enter Sainte-Chapelle, it isn't much to look at from inside or out. I was honestly about to leave when I noticed people going up a small staircase, so decided to follow them. Glad I did, otherwise I would have missed out on seeing the beautiful stained glass windows of the main chapel. Absolutely breathtaking, and one of the things I love most about Paris - the little hidden gems tucked away. The chapel is on the Ile de la Cite, on the same properly as the Palais de Justice. Because of this, there is extra security and a bit of a wait in line. There is no cost with the Paris Museum Pass, but this is the only attraction I found where the pass didn't allow us to skip the line. Worth the wait though! read more

This chapel was SO COOL. The architecture and stained-glass windows will blow you away. Sante-Chapelle was originally built to store religious relics, but is now an amazing tourist attraction. On the lower level, you'll find a couple statues and paintings along the walls. What you really want to see are the beautiful stained-glass windows on the upper level! Each window depicts a different biblical story-- starting from Adam and Eve and leading to the Apocalypse on the huge circular window. -- European weather is rather unpredictable. Take advantage of a bright, sunny day when you visit Sainte-Chapelle. -- Bring a neck brace! You're gonna be looking up 90% of the time, don't get injured! -_- -- Sainte-Chapelle is included in your MUSEUM PASS. A must see on your trip to Paris when you are near the Notre Dame cathedral. It is absolutely stunning and very well preserved for a cathedral from it's time. A few notes: it's 8.50 Euro per person to enter and, as of April 8th, fully 30% of the stained glass is covered with scaffolding for renovation and repair :( The renovations are supposed to be done this year, but we were sad to not be able to see it all. Dare I say more impressive then Notre Dame. This was my second trip to Paris and I did not go to this church on my last trip- it is a must see! My husband and I had the Museum Pass and we were able to cut the very long line. If you plan on doing a lot of museums in Paris get the pass and skip the lines :) read more

The chapel was beautiful, I love the huge stained glass window upstairs and the ceilings. However, they charge to get in, there's a long wait and they close down for a few hours a day. Go early so you don't have to wait long, definitely makes the trip less worth it, especially when you can walk right into Notre Dame (free) a few streets away. read more

This place seems rather pedestrian from the outside and even on the ground level on the inside. Once you go up the winding staircase in the corner to the second floor you see what it is all about. The stained glass windows are beautiful. Each pane tells a piece of the story. It is not a large site, but the views are very good. The lines were not too bad the day we were there. read more

I visited here in July 2019 with my two daughters on the recommendation of a friend who has lived in France her whole life (it's her favorite place to visit when she is in Paris). Sainte Chappelle is certainly a beautiful building. We found the entrance apparently just in time as they closed the line just behind us much to the protests of the people behind us. To get in you have to go through a security checkpoint complete with a metal detector, then it is back in line again. When we went, there was restoration work being done on it, which I understand it is something that needs to be done, I probably will never get another chance to get to go back to France, so I was a little bummed that the main window, the main attraction for the site, was blocked off entirely. The chapel only has two rooms to it, both simply gorgeous and well worth taking a quick peek at. It did feel a bit overpriced consider king it only takes a couple minutes to look around, but the history is worth it. read more

Okay, my last few reviews have been raves, so this one isn't going to be any different. The stained glass here is absolutely gorgeous. When you walk in, you are bathed in colors. After about a minute or so of looking up at the glass, you'll understand why there are benches in the middle. When I've visited, it's a delicate balance for me to be courteous because I want to sit there for a really long time, but I realize there is a line of people waiting behind me. Grand cathedral on Île de la Cité and houses some of the most striking and amazing stained glass windows you'll ever see. Entrance is €8,50 but it is included in the Paris Museum Pass so be sure to pick one up. A six day pass is €69 and worth it. It will be crowded so be extra patient when trying to get pictures. read more

Impressive! It is small compared to Notre Dame, but that makes sense for a chapel. From the outside, the famed stained glass doesn't seem all that impressive. However, the shear amount of stained glass here makes the view from the inside one that should not be missed. Because it is so small and so crowded, it is hard to get good pictures. So, the best plan is to let your eyes take mental pictures. Note: because it shares the property with a government department (Justice?), there is a tremendous amount of security here. read more

Probably the most impressive church in Paris. Notre Dame may have the name, Sacre-Coeur may have the views, but the Sainte-Chapelle is a stationary fiest for the eyes. The pictures of this can be found on the Internet, but like most sites, in order to be truly appreciated it has to be seen in person. I am surprised more people and travel guides don't have this rated higher. It is not an all day visit or even one you can linger around like the Louvre or Eiffel Tower, but it is still something that will leave a lasting impression on you. I would also recommend a magnet or even a stained glass ornament to take home for the memories. read more

Sainte CXhappelle is my absolute favorite place in Paris. As noted, it's a bit hard to find: don't be discouraged, it is more than worth the effort! It's located near Notre Dame, so it's centrally located. Look for the small signs. When you enter on the ground floor, you are presented with a beautiful painted interior--gorgeous in its own right. However, when you go upstairs, that's when you will be astonished! It's as if the walls of the building are literally made of stained glass. I don't think I've ever been so surprised by unexpected beauty in my travels. Especially if the sun is out, the interior will glow with colored light. In my opinion, this is an absolute don't miss sight. I preferred it over Notre Dame, too (although one should see both, I think). Plus, many visitors to Paris don't go to Sainte Chappelle, so you'll have seen something somewhat different. read more
