After downing all those pints of Guinness at the Storehouse's Gravity Bar, you probably have a need to perform a penance for your sins, even if you're not Catholic, so why not take a walk to Ireland's largest church and do just that? The connection with Guinness is not accidental since Benjamin Guinness, the brewery's founder, funded the cathedral's major reconstruction in the middle of the 19th century. His legacy is a controversial stained glass emblazoned with the slogan: "I was thirsty and ye gave me drink." Regardless the church needed repair desperately since it was originally built in 1191. Unfortunately much of its earlier history was consequently lost in the renovation as little is known as to how much of the current building is genuinely medieval and how much is Victorian pastiche. Today, although not located in the most desirable part of town and a bit of trek from the city center, the cathedral is still worthy of a stop as it's full of interesting tombs and memorials including the remnants of a "Holy Well" where St. Patrick supposedly baptized the first local converts. There is an admission fee for tourists like myself (€ 5.50) but not for regular worshipers. However, the park is free to anyone and offers a welcome respite amid the colorful flower beds before you have to get back on the Dublin Bus again. read more

The first cathedral we saw in Ireland and oh how beautiful it was....it was love at first site! Both on the outside and the inside, it was marvelous to say the least. A green entry way that surrounds the back half of the cathedral with a great view of the churches entry way. Walking in, you're breathe is taken away by the architectural beauty. Enormous ceilings with beautiful sculptures to look at from top down. Magnificent tile work and sculptures. Each end of the cathedral has exquisite work to look at. Glistening stained glass windows, pews filled with seats and work of art and many places to pray. Whether you are religious or not, there is a spiritual calming presence that surrounds this place. Reg was our guide and what a splendid man he was. Have excellent suggestions of places around the town and was quite lively. He was honestly our favorite part about the visit. But this is a must stop, a lovely place to go and see the Irish catholic splendor. read more

Saint Patrick's Cathedral is the largest church in Ireland. The church dates back to the 5th Century, but the building that stands today was built between 1191 and 1270. Major restoration occurred in the 1870's to prevent the church from collapsing so most of the building and décor dates back from the Victorian era. Every nook and cranny of St. Patrick's Cathedral is crammed with historical relics, art and statues. The most noteworthy sights at the church include Jonathan Swift's and Esther Johnson's graves in the Cathedral and the remains of a well that was believed to be the same well used by St. Patrick in the 5th century to baptize Christian converts. St. Patrick's Cathedral receives no state funding so there is a $5.50 euro fee to tourists who wish to visit the Cathedral outside of service times. This was on my list of places to visit in Dublin and I am so glad I got a chance to visit. They charge a fee to enter, but it is well worth it and is used to help preserve this magnificent cathedral that is steeped with Irish History. This is a self guided tour. I would recommend when you go in to go to the right side about half way down, where there is a place where they have about a fifteen minute video that shows the history and significant events that have shaped the cathedral. This will help explain most of the items you will see located around the cathedral. So many historical figures rest eternally at the cathedral. There is so much beauty in the interior and exterior, it is breathtaking. You have to be amazed at how much time went into the beautiful sculptures and stained glass. I was so glad I had a chance to visit this fabulous place and you won't be disappointed if you spend some time here also. They have a private prayer area and you can also attend a service if you wish, they have the times when you come in. read more

At this point in my European travels, a church is a church, but it is still very pretty. It cost 6 euros with our student ID's and we stayed for a while taking in the beautiful stained glass and gorgeous art hanging from the ceiling. It wasn't too crowded which was nice and we really got to take our time and walk the expanse of the church. I would definitely suggest coming here if you are a fan of church architecture and history! read more

I'm not sure what I can write about St.Pat's that hasn't already been said before. On my first visit to Dublin, I had opted to go to the U2 wall while the rest of my traveling group went to St. Pat's, so I was determined on this, my second visit back, to go and check it out. Our group made it in time to go on the free 11pm tour -BTW, I highly do recommend if you are going, try to go at a time when you can go on the free tour - they are 4 tours every half hour from 10, 10:30, 11 and 11:30 am and then another 4 in the afternoon.our tour guide was a lovely lass and she did a great job taking us around and showing us the highlights of the cathedral during the 40min tour. I think you can only see the original 12th century tiled floor when on the tour, as our guide actually moved the carpet that is currently in place to protect the tiles, and then showed our group the original designs that were then replicated when the Guinness family donated their money for the restoration work undertaken in the late 1800s. A must see when visiting Dublin! It only takes about an hour to thoroughly look through and admire the cathedral that took years and years to construct. There's so much history and so much beauty in it's construction. If you are nearby, it's more than worth the visit. read more

I so often shake my head over negative reviews of a majestic location such as this, especially when they get the facts wrong and complain about things as if they've never left the house before. I'm impressed that the church management has addressed many of these reviews and I hope I'm able to help other travelers, as well. First of all, it is a bit off the beaten path, but there are bus lines that will get you closer than how we walked there (our fault, not the church's). The property is enclosed within a fence, so you do walk through the yard and surrounding area to get into the cathedral. Secondly, this is NOT a Catholic church. It is Church of Ireland which is Anglican. Know what you're looking at or ask, don't judge or assume. If you've traveled anywhere, you will know that Catholic churches are quite ornate. Protestant churches are not. They are more simplistic in their setting and decorations. Upon first entering this stately place, you should know you're in a Protestant church because of the design. That is not to say that it's boring...it's just different. Third...people complain about having to pay to go into the cathedral. It's not a huge fee. I think we paid seven euro each and the money isn't spent willy-nilly, it goes back into the foundation, management, and upkeep of the church. It's a small congregation, so the "donation" or ticket price helps keep it nice with the doors open and tour guides to help you along. Final point it that although you are a tourist, be reverent and respectful as you may come upon people praying, the organist practicing, or larger tour groups in sections doing projects or hearing stories, This is a house of worship first and foremost. Take it in that way. Breathe it in. Enjoy the history and all it has to offer. Of particular interest is the remains of Jonathan Swift are interred here (he wrote Gulliver's Travels.) There's also a small gift shop and clean bathrooms to use. The staffers we spoke with were very charming, helpful, answered our questions, and gave us some history of the church. All in all a beautiful experience and a lovely part of Dublin. read more

Saint Patrick's Cathedral is the largest church in Ireland and was built in honour of our patron saint in 1192. It is a fab example of the Gothic style churches of the time. It is bigger than Christ Church Cathedral and it is one of only a few two cathedral cities! It has one of the largest organs in Ireland with 4000 pipes and has a bust of Johnathon Swift the writer of Gulliver's Travels who was once Dean of the Cathedral. The church has one of the finest male voice choirs in the country and has recently started up a girls choir too who sing twice a week. The tour buses and coaches all stop here so it can get a little crowed at times but if you do go on off peak times and get some peace and quite it is a lovely experience, or better yet come to a service and enjoy the Cathedral as it was intended and hear the wonderful choir in action. Afterwards, take the kids to the playground next door and chill out on the grass and relax amongst the beautiful flowers and tranquil grounds. read more

Where else can you go for €5.50 to see a 13th century cathedral? It is a massive structure, both inside and out. You may download walking guides of St. Patrick's before you arrive (from their website), or you can wait till you get there; they have some available when you enter the building. I enjoy visiting different cathedrals in my travels, mainly for the history behind it. Even though I've lived in Dublin all my life I've never been here until we made it part of Culture Night 2015. The building is in the shape of a cross. There really is so much to see here and there is such a feeling of history as you wander through. Highlight for me here was the model of the building and the bust of Jonathan Swift. This should definitely be a must do for any tourists or even native Dubliners who have never been. read more

For my next car, do I buy a Aston Martin or a Ferrari? Similar class, performance and luxury? What if I told you the Ferrari was free, but the Aston Martin you had to pay for? Most logical humans would chose the Ferrari... Cool, groovy, gothic exterior and for 5.50 euro($7.50) you get to see the equally cool, groovy, gothic interior. No access to the tower. However, I also spent 2 weeks in Italy six months ago. The Italian churches were all free to get into(I usually donated a euro or 2) and have much cooler artwork and sculptures. So if you've been to Italy, Saint Patricks isn't that big of a deal; skippable if you're pressed for time in Dublin. But if you've never been to Italy, its worth a look. Or if you're a cheap chump like the guy who bailed out in front of me in line, just check out the exterior and gardens. read more

One of the must see cathedral when you are in Dublin, since it is the largest and oldest cathedral of the country. Unlike most of the free public museum, you will have to pay a small fare (€6 for adult) for the visit but is worth the price since the cathedral has a great history and has played a major role in the city's heritage. There are a lot of historical references (esp. Jonathan Swift, famous for Gulliver's travels who was the Dean of the Cathedral, the door of reconciliation, Saint Patrick' life, World War) and even a short movie (15 mins) that helps you go through the ages and the history of the place, quite perfect for children. The cathedral is the resting place of famous people in Ireland's history and it also plays an important role for fallen soldiers - through the permanent expo called Lives Remembered. They have free guided tours at 10.30am and 2.30pm from Monday to Saturday, and you can listen to audioguide through the website (thanks to the Free Wifi:) Don't forget to visit the garden next to the cathedral which present restoration works and enable to enjoy the exterior of the cathedral. read more

Churches have come a long way in terms of catering to outside guests. They now have a lot of interesting rubbings for kids to do and some other kids activities. It's kind of awesome to enjoy the history of church and also find a way for the kids to not bother everyone. One docent even pulled me aside to say we could be loud, it was no problem as they were used to it. It was a welcome change. Highly recommend. Plus there is loads of interesting ww1 dedications and information on Jonathan Swift. read more

I have been to the Cathedral in New York, so this was a must on our visit to Dublin. You get to pay to see the inside but they do allow you to take photos. I was surprised this seemed smaller than the one in NY. The location and historical significance is noteworthy. read more

I'm not sure what I can say about St. Patrick's cathedral that you haven't seen or read before. Cathedral's all tend to blend together over time. It takes a lot to stand out amongst the crowd, especially in the UK. St. Patrick's cathedral is one of the go to spots for tourists and locals alike. It is big and impressive while still boasting some architectural charm. I was amazed by the sheer size of this cathedral. If architecture is your game you shall not be disappointed! The location is pretty central and easy enough to find. There are usually people buzzing around and at least a few of which are in awkward positions trying to get the perfect photo. As to the insides of the cathedral, well I don't know much about it. Charging 5€ for a self led tour through a chapel is a bit extreme in my opinion so I led a silent protest of one voice a.k.a I did not get to go inside. This truly is a bummer as I am sure it is quite beautiful! Even if you just stop by to enjoy the park and look at the cathedral from the outside, it is worth a stop. Who knows, maybe you won't feel the need to protest and can even let me know how it is inside. ;) read more

Jonathan Swift, who was Dean from 1713 to 1745, made a famous sermon about how badly Irish people were being treated by England in this cathedral. St Patrick's Cathedral is a beautiful church. Built in honour of our patron saint St Patrick (ie the guy we use as an excuse to take a day off work and enjoy a 'few' drinks every year in March), it's located just off Aungier ST. Now, I'm no holy mary, but this really is a spectacular church. When I graduated from DIT, my graduation ceremony was held here, and I must admit, it was something very special. It has huge high ceilings and beautifully painted glass windows. A church was first built here in 1911, and then in 1220 the current building was built. It's now the National Cathedral for the Church of Ireland, but welcomes visitors from all walks of life. If you had a spare afternoon, this would be a nice place to visit. read more

Boy do I love a good cathedral. Having traveled all over Europe, you'd have thought I would get sick of visiting huge old churches, but I haven't. I think that there is a certain amount of serenity in these kind of structures; maybe it's from something spiritual, maybe it's just the magnificence of the architecture and those flying buttresses. Wherever it comes from, the peaceful feeling of cathedrals is really something you don't get sick of. St. Patrick's Cathedral has a long and somewhat interesting history, though not as tumultuous as some other cathedrals. It has plodded through the centuries, been presided over by various bishops and survived the test of time. It's really a lovely, and huge, place to wander around for a bit. It's also nice to just sit in the surrounding park and admire the lovely spires. Tours aren't free, but they're worth it. There are also frequent organ and choral concerts, which I would think are lovely as well. read more

Visited April 2015: "Engulfed in History the moment you walk in." St Patrick's Cathedral (Ard Eaglais Naomh Pádraig) is a short walk from Dublin Castle, roughly 5 minutes. We also passed the Dublin City Hall, and Christ Church Cathedral - which I of course took pictures of. We paid our admission fee online, and when we presented our eticket, we were given a leaflet. In there they talk about the different tombs and monuments to see, separated by location. There's even a map, showing you each tomb/monument discussed by corresponding number. I took pictures of the Celtic grave slab, the tile flooring that reminded me of Spanish tiles (different color variation), status of great figures, and showing the colossal size of the cathedral. It still astonishes me how these buildings were erected in 1100 or 1300 AD. read more

Sometimes a little praying is needed... though I do most of mine to the porcelain and or the lotto gods but to each their own. If you're in need of some grace you might as well go to the largest church in Ireland. You wouldn't know it but it was founded back in 1191. It does have that ancient feel but is still very well kept. If you think the outside is grand wait till you get a load of the inside, high ceilings, stain glass, and ancient knight's flags. For a small entrance fee of 5.50 euro you can walk around most of the church. A small price to pay so you won't get smotted, smitted, smotted?! Whatever! It's beautiful, historical, and a nice place for a stroll. They even have a gift shop... yeah I know. read more

One of two beautiful and awe-inspiring Cathedrals in Dublin's city center. Admission was included with our pre-purchased Dublin Pass. St. Patricks is within view of Dublin's other Cathedral Christ Church and there are very interesting historical reasons why these two glorious churches are located within such close proximity. St. Patricks gets strong marks for the wonderful adjacent park (rumored to be the location of a baptismal well used by St. Patrick himself) and the amazing, ancient battle flags of the British Empire's regiment that served in battles of the Boer and Crimean Wars. Also prominentaly displayed is the final resting place of intellect, satirist and church Dean Jonathan Swift. I found the seats of the dormant Order of St. Patricks knights fascinating as well. This is an imposing, and gloriously adorned church, but sadly it doesn't seem as accessible or pious as it's nearby neighbor. I wouldn't make a visit to Dublin without visiting. I'm not sure if there's any other place on earth with so much history condensed into one area. Being the history buff I am I loved every second I spent here. Every window, floor tile, piece of art, and statue has a story to tell, and they are all done with exquisite detail. Jonathan Swift is buried here...how cool is that? There are helmets on display from the Knights of Saint Patrick, which was quite a sight to behold. Saint Patrick's baptismal font is on display as well. The artifacts on this building, which is stunningly beautiful in its own right, is a must see for any tourist in Ireland. I'm docking one star for having a gift shop in the middle of a cathedral. Call me old fashioned, but I shouldn't be able to buy a box of chocolate that says "thanks for watching the dog" in such a sacred place. read more

Dare I say the most famous cathedral in the world? At the end of our visit, someone queried us as to why we visited, what stood out to us, and if we had heard of the cathedral before. But who hasn't heard of St. Patrick's? Granted, I didn't realize the cathedral wasn't Catholic until days before arriving in Dublin, but whatever. It matters not. read more

This was an interesting visit and at 6 euro seems fairly priced. There was a large display dedicated to the churches influence on the war effort along with a place where you can write a note to a lost veteran in your life and I saw a few people doing so in quiet contemplation. The architecture is very cool, considering it is nearly 1,000 years old. There is also a history area dedicated to Jonathan swift that was very interesting to read. As well as an area dedicated to choirs as there is a choir school across the street. read more

I came here on a whim mostly, and also because I felt like it was a must-see in Dublin. Having walked all over, it felt only right to stop by this cathedral, and I must say - it's impressive. The interior space is massive, but my favorite part are the older flags that have clearly been there for centuries. I was very happy to have purchased a ticket for a nominal fee as it was well worth it. There's a lot of history in these churches that is so much more intriguing to see in person than read about in history books. Some people hate visiting churches and cathedrals because they are "all the same." I don't share those sentiments and would highly recommend visiting as many as you can - you never know what you'll find! read more

This place is well worth the money. They have a huge amount of really interesting artifacts and historical stories from what is usually an unrepresented perspective on irelands past. All the world war one stuff was really well put together. The old war monuments were really fascinating to see. As my tour was at the end of the day there was a childrens choir practicing as i left.
