Before being a member of GCCC, I was church hopping for 2 years. I feel like there aren't enough…read moreinfos or perspectives about churches nowdays, hence, here's my quick thoughts about this church. GCCC's denomination is under Christian & Missionary Alliance that typically specialize about missionary efforts. About 200sh people show up every week - mostly young Koreans and Chinese working professionals (20s to 30s) + some families (15-30 kids) + college students. Coming from a legalistic church, I've been blessed with the pastors here & their grace based sermons. Pros: (1) The community aspect's great. The members are quite active & are always down to hang out. A lot of the members tend to move here from other cities. Due to this, they don't have much safety blanket to fall on, hence, they tend to give more efforts to get to know people / make friends in their new environment. (2) Small groups are a great way to find accountability as well as getting plugged into the church. (3) Currently, GCCC has both local mission partners & international mission trips opportunities (Spain, Cambodia) with ample serving opportunities at the church as well. (4) Metro accessible; This church's located inside Hilton Doubletree hotel & service starts at 11:30 a.m. on Sundays. Cons: (1) With this church being close to DC & filled with the younger professionals, some of the people do tend to come and go (temporary positions, internships, etc). At the same time, we do have many people that've stayed here for a long time. (2) Some of the more popular small group locations can be more packed than others. Tips: If you're a newcomer, just tell that to the ushers (we wear tags) in the welcoming table. I know it can be awkward / intimidating being the new guy in a church - you're not sure who to talk to, especially since many people break in convo groups. You can always just approach the ushers after service; We can answer any questions you might have, help you get plugged in, introduce you to our pastors or just chat & get to know you.

Finding this church was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I would be so lost without…read morethe people in this wonderful community. They are so caring and thoughtful. I love Fairfax Church! I'm 29 years old and I have been going here since high school wow ! On and…read moreoff of course before I returned to God full time :) after graduating high school I spent most of my years away from God and Religion. About three years ago I decided to give my life back to God and I was trying different churches out but something always pulled me back here because it felt like home. Now years later I have made this my home church, gotten baptized and also committed my three children to Christ. Such a great community.

Reviewing churches is definitely a dicey area, because so many people could be offended or forced to relive childhood spiritual trauma. I'm trying to stay away from divisiveness. I want to help local church hoppers. Fairfax Community Church reminds me of a "mocha choco ya ya latte" (as my funny friend S would say). From the parking lot traffic control, to the dome-shaped coffee lounge, to the public text-message screen in the lobby, and even the mostly white families in attendance, I got the feeling we were at Fair Oaks Mall. But instead of a store, I found a snazzy Christian soft rock performance and a suburban dad preacher guy. I was really impressed with the computerized daycare/Sunday school pickup. The website boasts a pizza night - which is honestly something that drew me: free food (regardless if one tithes). The church is affiliated with the Church of God (of Anderson, Indiana), and hosts activities that feature Willow Creek megalo-church's Association. Not to say that God is Left or Right of some theological/political/social divide, but that the people who organize religious activities have certain inevitable biases. I can't figure out where to put this church, but it's probably moderate to conservative, at least compared to me. It was definitely an interesting and entertaining experience. No adult education on Sunday, at least that I could tell. From the website, it seems there are multiple small groups. This is a good place to be an anonymous churchgoer, because it's pretty crowded and there are two contemporary services in a row.

Hrm....how do I start this one. Since it's a church, I should be respectful to a certain degree,…read moreright? Heheheheh let's see if I can keep it that way. The Wife and I came by here to do a little "church shopping" and see how things are there - it's a part of us trying to "plug in" to the Korean community here. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...I didn't get a good vibe from this place. Here's why: 1. When you walk in, there are greeters at the door. However, these folks somehow manage to be familiar with the several thousand faces that walk through those halls every Sunday. When my wife and I went to walk in, one of the ladies stopped us and wanted us to fill out an address card. I declined since 1) doing so only invites unwanted visitors to your home and 2) we didn't make up our mind that this was the congregation that we wished to join. Her mind didn't seem to process this as she continued to press me to fill out a card. When I told her we were "church shopping," her response was, "well look no further, you found the congregation you need." Ummm....what? How do you know this? 2. The place is too damn big. Seriously. It actually starts to give me the creeps. I understand that immigrants to the area, particularly in the Korean circles, tend to gravitate toward population venues such as churches and associations. But man, this is out of control. They're burgeoning so much that they had six different services. It's almost too robotic and impersonal. 3. After the service, the folks were so big that no one even bothered to stop and talk to us. Now, this isn't me in some narcissistic tendency thinking that everyone should talk to me. However, every religious institution I have attended in my lifetime usually has a cadre of folks who do seem to gravitate to new faces and gently introduce themselves whether out of pure curiosity or other motive. Not here. Everyone had their own cliques and groups so we slowly blended out. Personally, unless you have some sort of friend or other connection into the church. Otherwise, you'll have to gut through their new congregation member "indoctrination" program. Yeah, another red flag. You have to go through a new member program for a few weeks before you're allowed to join the remaining groups in Bible study. Meh. No thanks.

As far as Asian American churches go, this is one of the largest congregations in the area, at…read moreleast for Korean Americans. Beautiful building that is filled with dark-haired people of all ages. Denomination is Presbyterian Church in America - the more conservative branch of Presbyterianism. Do not confuse this place with PC(USA) - its more liberal, mainline cousin. I have mixed feelings about this place where I gained a deep appreciation for Christianity, but which ultimately ended up not being a very healthy place for me. Three stars should be two, because it's one of those love-the-sinner-hate-the-sin type of places. But it's also a powerful center of communal love and understanding - except for gay people, liberals (theological, social, or political - IMHO) and people who aren't into fire and brimestone. The last time I went was over 10 years ago, but the scars for me are permanent, and somehow I doubt they've changed. Features Korean and English language services and activities.
