As far as mega churches go, McLean does it really well. I have been for numerous Sunday services and the messages are great and super convicting yet inspiring (as they should be). I also had the opportunity to volunteer at the night to shine event that they host, which was awesome too. Does anybody get annoyed with the man in the audience of sermons Always Hollering very loudly ? Yes saying Amen and Preach is not a bad thing - but he is just obnoxiously disruptive and makes himself so loud its like he really wants attention as if he were a part of each sermon. I know a lot of people are fed up with it. It makes coming in person less encouraging and even streaming it - he is so disruptive. Fine if he wants to say Amen etc., but how about the Pastors tell him "Thanks for your enthusiasm but we also need to be considerate of the rest of the congregation too" The man is so loud that if you sit near him he will scare you all of a sudden when you are thinking, listening to the sermon quietly. Pastors - you know who he is.... How about gently reminding him that as part of the congregation and community - he is not the only one attending, be respectful of his neighbors because he is distracting those of us from hearing the pastor - to instead hearing this man yelling in the audience every couple of minutes - Literally ! Aside from that - I actually really like Mike Kelsey's sermons the very best. He has a great very human way of connecting the bible to daily reality. Very articulate very honest and down to earth. With David Platt - he is OK I guess, seems like he is more into being a celebrity pastor sometimes and the OCD highlighting words -- makes the passage unreadable on the screen. I like the fact that he is so into embracing diversity and spreading the word of Jesus to unreached areas - but some of the things that have been uncovered about David are very troubling - as facts - like he drives a Range Rover (a $200 k price tag) - has a Million Dollar House in Mclean the Church has helped him secure - his $10k - $20k Speaking Fees - PER SPEECH - and he is pushing for $350 K to be sent to Southern Baptist Church (in an email published) before he was even fully installed as a lead pastor there - are very disturbing. Imagine how all that money could help the homeless and unemployed families in Northern Virginia alone - while ministering to them too ?? For a pastor - it sounds like he lives a VERY Luxurious money-oriented lifestyle - which is NOT Jesus's way. Think of when Pope Francis came to DC - the white house and more wanted to put him in a high-end vehicle bullet proof with all sorts of bells and whistles. But Pope Francis refused and said he wanted a Small Modest car to tour down the streets. And so he did. He was in this tiny black vehicle where barely 4 grown men could even fit. I wish David was more accessible to connect with too as a member / attender in the church. He seems to have taken on this "Celebrity" untouchable status and is more about self-promotion and fame than genuine heart to heart human connection. I had a friend who was a long-time staff member there and she said that even for Her - David was almost always unreachable. So that is disheartening to hear. The church is generally very big and there are lots of opportunities to serve, volunteer, find church groups, get counseling and more. read more

McLean Bible Church - Huge church - Churches Near Me - Vienna, Virginia

I'm not sure how one should review a church, but I really enjoy McLean Bible. The first thing you notice when you arrive here is that it's huge. During services there are about a dozen volunteers directing traffic just inside the parking garage. Inside, McLean Bible is like a bee hive and every corner is buzzing. Because this church was really designed to be a destination for many this buzz of activity is nearly as pronounced during the week as it in on the weekend. The strength of leadership is what holds a church of this size together. There isn't one monolithic, micromanaging executive pastor running this show but rather a very strong hierarchy of leaders and a constant effort to build small groups and to lift active members into larger leadership positions. It's a fantastic model and it clearly works and gets results. The stated mission of this church "is to make an impact on secular Washington with the message of Jesus Christ." That mission has clearly showered them with blessings as they have grown this church and are actively building 5 satellite churches as well. Some people find the congregation to be a little too secular at times and again, look at their clearly stated mission. This place is a bridge. However, I have also met many people at this church who have clearly grown beyond what McLean has to offer them and continue to go here to share back and help others cross that bridge as someone once helped them. At the top of all this is Lon Solomon who is a powerfully anointed speaker. If you've ever been confused by pastors who seem to ramble on and leave you more confused than when you came in, you need to listen to Lon. Not only is his speaking skill in the top 1% out there, the structure of his talks is also quite amazing. We came from a way different church - a smaller edgier one locally known as the Rock-and-Roll church or The Biker Church. So McLean was a bit of a shock...its big, wealthy, and more formal. Ok that said its a come-as-you-are place but the norm isnt "sandals and biker jacket" the norm is more dockers with more than a few suit and ties. No big deal just a change for us. Ok so bigness. We drove up and went "holy schnikies thats big" but its good to have covered parking when raining/snowing (didn't do much of either back in TX) and thats half of the sense of big. So having ended our steeplechase to stay at MBC we noticed that once plugged into a parents of teens group, our normal service, and the kids in the Rock/AWANA...it doesn't seem big because you focus on the people you are in community with not the rest who you DON'T know. Programs. Wow. Multi-language programs - Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Afghan/Persian (Farsi I think) and of course Southern. Kid programs are off the charts. I am told young adult/singles are amazing, and every group from Creative Arts, Sexual Addiction recovery, divorce support group, financial assistance, food/clothes to the poor, its pretty much all there. Resources they got. Either traditional service, Edge, or Frontline (Edgier service for the Yelp-ish age crowd). We got over the bigness and love it now. HIGHLY recommend it. This is a very big church, a mega church. Thousands of people come here for church every weekend. I have been coming to Mclean Bible Church for 8 years now. The best thing about this church is that it has biblically sound teachings. The senior Pastor, Lon Solomon, does a great job in teaching and helping the congregation understand and apply the teachings. The church also focuses on reaching out to the community and serving those in need in the DC area. The Bible teaches us that we need to do good in our community, so the church is incredibly focused on that to ensure that we can reach others with the story of salvation. Lastly, I want to mention that the church is focused on discipleship. They want believers to dive deeper into their relationship with God and make it real. The church doesn't want armchair Christians, they want Christians who call themselves disciples of Jesus Christ and are out there representing God in action. This church is not for everyone for many reasons, but it has been great for my family. We are invested in the people and the various ministries. If you come to this church to visit, you will not be disappointed. read more

This church used to be really fabulous with good support groups, and ministry. But they've changed a lot, and I found more and more aggressive people at the church. I tried a Singles Group this past Winter, and while I met some really helpful people - I found there were some men in the group who were really nasty and stalkerish towards the women. I wouldn't even recommend trying FUEL, it wasn't a good group anymore, too many weirdos for the stable people in the group to manage. In fact, other women in the church told me to avoid the Singles group. Worse, I found that the services had become too rambunctious, and it's not a safe church anymore. I do NOT recommend attending there at this time. Maybe in the future the church will get it's congregation under control, but not at this time. I would not attend once they reopen doors for services. read more

I love this church for many reasons but the main reason is because it really is a Bible church. The teachings by Pastor Lon Solomon when we first started to attend and now by Pastor David Platt never steer away from God's Word. Straight from the Bible and not opinion of man. This church is a rare gem. I've been attending for 3.5 years, member for 2 years. In a year and a half I was able to carefully examine the church and get involved to better determine if this was the church for me... If you're looking for a perfect church, this isn't it and you'll never find it, but it's definitely the perfect church for me. It has helped me grow in the Word, find biblical community, and obtain the resources for my spiritual growth, marriage, and other areas of my life. I've always been a part of small churches, so I was a little overwhelmed at first but I am truly grateful for all that it offers and how they can address your needs as long as you're intentional about it. Don't expect everything to be handed to you, you have to make any effort. I see that previous reviews are discontent with the teachings or ordinances. Bible Believing and Bible teaching church. Teaches the truth of Jesus Christ even when it isn't popular or relatively convenient / comfortable. High view of God and His Bible. Great assembly of believers led by a godly and prayerful staff. Not without faults but no organized group of humans is without fault but they do a great job at identifying faults and mitigating & minimizing negative impacts. It is a very large church which is a blessing but can be difficult to get the small church and small community fee if all you do is attend service once a week. Intimate community is very achievable with God's blessing and a bit of extra participation and service (join a small group and serve). Lot's of opportunities and more are growing as people begin realizing they don't GO to church but they ARE the church. read more

Being a preacher's daughter, I have heard a lot of sermons in my life. Have visited many churches in the last twenty plus years in this area. McLean Bible does an outstanding job teaching the word of God. Sat under Lon Solomon's teaching many years and he was a fantastic speaker with incredible historical and language expertise and never comprised the word of God. Since he retired David Platt has taken over as the main teaching pastor. We are all inspired by great sermons. However, few of us actually walk away convicted to change things in our lives. David Platt is just an ordinary man doing extraordinary things for God's kingdom because he loves him so much. He is unlike many pastors who try to entertain, focus on themselves and their own stories instead of God. The word of God can speak for itself and doesn't need to be embellished by stories. David is super humble, does not seek self glory or attention and always points people to Jesus, not to himself. You can see and hear the passion and conviction in his eyes and his voice. He is committed to spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth, regardless of the cost, sacrifice or comfort. He is not just a man of words but one of action. He does what he preaches. When he challenges you to do something in your life, you can trust that he is holding himself to that standard as well. He is not afraid of preaching the gospel, asking the hard questions, addressing the sins in our current culture. Radical and Counter Culture are two great books that will challenge you to live differently, to truly live for Christ and take a stand for the gospel and obey it. The other speakers at the other campuses are good but can not compare. Their worship music is great and it is a gigantic facility. One downside is that you have to be super intentional of serving and getting connected or you may never meet anyone or make any friends. Even the "small groups" are fairly large and hard to connect. But if you want to grow in Christ and be challenged to truly live your life for Christ 24/7 and not just on Sunday's, this is the place for you. read more

I've been going to MBC for pushing 30 years now. I went when it met in the Langley High School auditorium, then at the Balls Hills Road campus, and finally at their Tyson's location. MBC isn't perfect - no church is. MBC is, however, committed to preaching the gospel and winning converts for Christ. The church has greatly impacted my life and the lives of my family. God is good. All the time. God is good! And so for that, as my gratitude to Him, I would like to share my experience of worship and learning the Word of God at one of the biggest and the busiest House of God among DC, VA, MD area. Located in Vienna, Alexandria, branch out to other part in Arlington, and also on some part of area in MD. But the one that I more often to visit for Sunday sermon is the one at Leesburg Pike, near Tyson's mall. As a Church goer, I love McLean Bible Church. Mega church with their different time of service, two times in the morning, one in the afternoon and one at late afternoon which will be done at the early evening. So if in case we miss the first sermon will be another next one, and if we can not make it in the morning or in the afternoon, the 5:30 pm service will be the best bets. The attendees is usually from the different layer of ages. They also have Sunday school for little kids, in the different room, and if we like to attend bible class after the morning service, will be available as well. The morning services and the early afternoon, is usually attended by family, more mature crowd but also attended by young professionals. The evening service, which what the Church name as the Frontline service is usually attended by young adult and youth. I am so glad to finally found this Church. Good sermon, good teaching from all the pastors, and excellent praise and worship. When I live overseas I have a similar type of church, the place I can learn more of the word of God and growth in my faith and spirituality. Perhaps for some of the people who use to with the smaller scale of Church, this Church can be a little bit intimidating because of the big size of it, that we can consider as a mega church, with their big flat screen all around on the main worship room. But for me, it is actually quite what I am looking for. As petite self as I am, I have learn to think Big as my Mighty God is Bigger than life. :) The other part of the church that has become my favorite place to stop after the sermon is the book store. :) I found several of interesting book from this book store. About life, helping others, dating, and even the book that not hesitate to discussing from Christian point of view and giving some good insights of what the world has put it in the wrong context of what God has plan to be for human that has been overrated. Another good thing about this mega church, they have parking available, come early is always a good way to go, since the parking can be busy traffic and full easily in the morning. But thank God it will always be a space in the higher open air area if you keep driving up. Also, since coffee is always been my favorite thing in the morning, I am so happy that McLean bible have their own coffee shop inside. Definitely save time and efforts without making the church attendee leave the place and find another coffee shop. McLean Bible also have a Cafeteria with different selections of breakfast options. No time for lunch for the next service or bible class? No problem. They serve the food at the Cafeteria. Definitely save the day! Coming to this Church and attending the service, has giving me more understanding of how to live, help me to progress and lead me for what to do and not to do as His follower. What beneficial and what not useful and beneficial in live, on my journey to God given opportunity and destiny. As a human being, who is not perfect, maybe we experience stumble in our walk of life, but the learning experience from listening the Word of God, for the sermon I attended, I have learn to be able stand up again from falling down with the strength from God, to be resilience from all the trial and tribulations in life. For all the good things that happen in my life, from all the talent and all my blessings, I know God has everything to do with it. :) And so for that, I am coming back to the heart of of worship. This review is a bit old a few years old... but I didnt have good experiences here and definetely rang off some crazy alarms. 1. First service I went to they made some guy confess to the church that he cheated on his spouse. You could tell that the guy looked like it was in the spot and was uncomfortable. 2. Many years later... went back there. Now they give you pamphlets and presentations on how to be an evangelist and convert people O.o So... yeah... I couldn't drink the kool aid on this place and I tried twice. Church reviews, what'll they think of next... I've been going to McLean for a long time and seen it go through a lot of changes. It can be a bit intimidating when you first get here, in fact it feels more like a small airport concourse sometimes than it does a church, but thats because of the shear size of the facility. Its easy to get lost in a place this large, but they want to make sure you don't stay lost. There are a lot of wonderful opportunities to meet people through things like Frontline athletics or any of the other ministries. If you feel like theres no way God could love you because of something in your past, you'll find a ministry here where other people have been through the same thing. If you reach out just a little bit, you can find a place for you. Unfortunately, its also big enough that you do have to make a bit of effort, albeit only a small amount, to fit in. read more

It's beyond me that churches can be rated (there are just so many factors involved, I find it hard to quantify), but I will get over it to applaud McLean Bible Church's amazing ministry. There is something for everyone here. Whether you're old, young, single, married, with or without kids, there will be a niche for you. There are so many amazing resources here, including a Career Network Ministry that you can find via Meetup, a housing dashboard for people looking for a place, roommates, etc. Along with the amazing resources, this church is very modern in that sermons make sense to us in our day-to-day today. The messages are very applicable to now, and reach a variety of audiences (hence the multiple campuses and ministries). The Senior Pastor Lon is amazing and actually pretty famous! I highly recommend visiting for the traditional or contemporary Sunday Service and checking out the many other activities, events, and programs! read more

I come here almost every Sunday for worship with my family. I love this place. Every single one of the staff members here are always so welcoming and friendly, it warms my heart. During service, the worship team is awesome and the message always hits the spot. One thing I really love about this place is that they are very good with their time. They start right on the dot as promised and end promptly, not delaying anyone. I decided to write a review because I went to their Christmas Eve service today and it was such a blessing to be there. It was packed even when my family and I got there 15 minutes before service, so going early is a must. I really think that Christian should try out Mclean for at least one service. read more

This is a great church to start at and develop friends and get involved. If you want a place to make sure you kids/teens /spouse / single friends / whatever get in and get involved, this church is the place. Great teachings. I can sit in an AOG then meets some friends at Mclean and I always hear the same message being spoken. Neither pastors know each other but the word I need to hear that week will be in both places. Good worship - a place where charismatic movements can take place within reason. (If you are AOG - go knowing the spirit is their, the people aren't AOG (nor is Lon). Some say it's informal. It's full of milk drinkers. Lon speech may weigh tons but the level in which he gives it / those who preach their give it, is for those who drink milk. Lon is an amazing person with an incredible story. He's move mountains by faith and determination. But you are not going to find some man laying on hands or healing anyone - to date - at this church. If you want a solid word that's been put in the blender then this is the right church. And you will never have to miss a service. There are numerous times to go but they are live on-line with more than one option to be there! Good / bad thing that is almost unique to this church; Starbucks is INSIDE the church. Great, you can have coffee - if you like that shop. Bad voodoo hoodoo icon on Starbucks, so unless Starbucks changes that then the church needs to find a local mom & pop shop who has fresh roasted beans and does NOT burn them! Overall, enjoy yourself. OK, so I've been a member of MBC since the early nineties. I've seen it grow from about two thousand to over fifteen thousand. I've seen the mistakes we've made over the years, but I've also seen amazing things occur as well. The good far outweigh the bad. But first, let's remember, the church is just a group of imperfect human beings, so no church will be perfect (hence four stars). Secondly, MBC is a 'BIBLE' church. I don't understand why people expect bible churches to teach anything that isn't based in the bible. This means if we accept the bible as it is, rather than revise it to adjust to our current social mores, we get labeled as a cult of haters. The real message of the bible is that all people fall short of a perfect God, i.e., we are all sinful, and thus cannot be in a relationship with a perfect God. The good news is that God has made a provision for that, i.e., the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All we have to do is confess and turn from our sins and invite Christ to be Lord of our life. MBC has consistently done a good job of teaching this. We have people from all walks of life - race, religion (even atheists), political party (MBC does NOT endorse any political party), sexual orientation, etc.; all still struggling with sin on a daily basis. No one sin is better or worse than another. In contrast to a perfect sinless God, we all fall short. Hate of any group of people has never been taught at MBC. As a non-white person, I have to say that it's very encouraging to see an ever-growing diverse congregation that seeks to put God first and teach from the bible. Funny thing is people that dislike MBC tend to be extremists on both the left and the right. That should speak volumes... BTW, the church leadership has been very intentional about making sure that MBC does NOT become a country-club church. As a long-standing member, I can say that we have had biker types show up in jeans and leathers (and not just during the Jill's Ride promotions). In fact, in over twenty years, I can count on two hands the number of times that I've worn a suit or khakis to a church service, though there are a fair number of people that do. I've never received anything but warm welcomes, even though I'm dressed down. God cares about our heart condition, not our outward appearance and most folks at MBC get this... read more

We heard a few Bible verses when visiting, as well as lots of bad music and a pep talk to follow Jesus. McLean is now just a shell of a church and nothing like it used to be. This new pastor even apologized recently for praying for President Trump who humbly asked for prayer for shooting victims. The pastor seems to not understand that church is for believers and that we are not called to constantly respond to criticism of the unbelieving world. Immature leadership and consequently, the sheep are also. We also noticed the absence of Sunday School classes where people are being taught. I dont like to point out wrongs by fellow Christians but they are leading believers poorly. read more

This is a biblically sound church with a great core of senior leadership. If big churches are not your thing you may not like MCB due to the size, but I would at least recommend giving the MCB podcast a try and see for yourself. You can easily attend church online if that is something better for your lifestyle. This church teaches the bare bones of Christianity without putting a denominational spin on any topic. Locally it is known as a mega-church. The size of the facility and amount of people at any of the multiple in-house services provided throughout Sat and Sun. There's just no excuse for you to not be a part of a church service on the weekend :) and for those times you can't physically make it out there are live and downloadable podcasts available. McLean Bible Church just offers great messages, worship, and LOTS of resources & ministries to those who are seeking healing or opportunities to serve others within the church or out in the DC/MD/VA communities. read more

My children went to the summer camp at the Herndon Campus organized in the evening for a week and I volunteered to help with the arts projects. My children had a great time there and learned a lot. I like how different communities and age group grows spiritually in this church. They embrace other Christian groups, promoting the gospel of Jesus first and foremost. There are so many activities available for everyone. The Pastors and even the worship teams are Spirit-led. It's not a perfect church which is why it is perfect for everyone. The music was what caught me many years ago when I was looking for a place of worship. They have different campuses around metro DC, the facilities are well maintained. I feel Jesus here! read more

Kind of disappointing at this point... I've been bringing my child to Wednesday nights for about 10 times but still not excited nor looking forward to the next meeting. Today I dropped my kid off once again for the weekly meeting. I appreciated that the church had hot dogs and chips for the kids to enjoy. However, my kid came back home saying it got boring and didn't do anything besides eating the hot dog. Felt shy to play the games so instead, wondered around the church alone... then said they had a little gathering at the end and prayed before being dismissed. I feel there's a lack of organization and structure here. I wish there were leaders that lead them into a guided, meaningful and fulfilling time on Wednesdays. Maybe create small groups so they can engage, interact, do fellowship, create friendships, be encouraged, and feel they belong. Some kids like mine are still trying to figure things out after being isolated during pandemic so sometimes it's hard to break the ice. I love this church and I'll try to bring again but I'm being discouraged and might even try a different church because my child says doesn't want to go again :( read more

I love the church and sermon is one of the best. We've been attending the church for 9 years but seeking for a new one for my 9th grader. The church blocked the hall from the entrance area for Jr. High. There is no more high school service. No more high school Rock! High school students need more church bonding and should be connected among the peers. Attending the regular service and serve another service doesn't work for every student who still needs time for the personal experience of Jesus. read more

A bit odd that ministries are reviewed and/or rated, but there you go. I found these reviews when I did a Google search for a new church in Northern Virginia. I have been attending McLean Bible Church in Tysons for quite a while -- ever since my children were young and they are teenagers now. I was an unwed mother when I joined and I admit that I was shunned at first, but I think the church is a bit less judgmental now (and peoples' views changed once they learned I was a foster mother). Anyway, loved this church, they do great work so it is with a very sad heart that I have to move on. As others have noted it is a mega-church so you must join the smaller groups to get a feeling of belonging. The reason I am moving on is because the group (The Rock) my teenage daughter attended (they usually meet once a week or so during the season) was getting a bit "snarky." (can't think of another word). My daughter had been complaining that some of the other girls were a bit nasty and talked about each other. I didn't think anything of it for quite a while, until I actually witnessed this behavior. Some of the girls actually called some other girls (not members of the church) some awful names. I told my daughter that this would be a good opportunity to show leadership and try to talk to the girls about their behavior. Since this time she has been subject of public ridicule and worse. I talked to the parents, but was just told to brush it off. I want my daughter to associate with others with integrity and kindness--not this behavior. The hypocrisy has continued--the girls post pictures of themselves with third-world children (ministry trip), but criticize others in their neighborhood and school who have less material things then they do. I also see them at school and I am just so troubled how they treat others. Yes, they talk about their love of God, but how about their treatment of humanity. I could go on, but there is no use really. I LOVED the Sunday services (so inspirational) but I just can't have my daughter exposed to this behavior. read more

Offered a great deal of solace when my mother passed away last year. Lon seems very sincere and although I don't agree with his views I love his spirit. This is a first class organization and they will watch your children while you attend service. They do a great deal of outreach in the community. Another area institution. read more

I would love to give it another chance; but can't get past the loud music and amplification. It hurt my ears and gave me a headache. I even wore earplugs! I am ok with a band, etc. Other things to note, it was our first time visiting and we entered thru the lower level by the rock n roll auditorium and thought this was the main auditorium. This was hearing damaging loud and I find it difficult to believe they allow this volume. Evidently I am not the first one to observe this nor to be concerned. No one seemed to care we were first time visitors and want us to feel welcomed. The door ushers were too busy conversing with each other as we passed thru into the auditorium. The seat ushers were too busy being efficient. It was a cold environment and more of a theatrical production. I met another visitor who looked bewildered and said to me. " I don't know where to go or what to do". I found it interesting; I was the one to give him information. It seemed the other members were happily visiting with each other and did not venture to help someone else. No one asked us "Can we help you?" I've gone to this church for many years. I love that Lon is very careful to preach God's word and not add a bunch of his personal thoughts or opinions. Good sound doctrine! There is really something for everyone at this church. They help you meet new people and get connected. There is so much love and support to be found there. I also love all the different ministries and seeing and hearing all the people they have blessed! From the Career Network to the Clothing ministry, so many free resources led by volunteers for people in need. Plus they are clear and open about where every dime goes. No secrets!
