Once I moved to LB, I was looking around for a Catholic Church that felt right. I'm glad I came to St Bartholomew it feels like a great community church. I've brought my babies here and both priests have been amazing with our family. Including blessing our babies when we've introduced them. The only downfall is there's no parking so sometimes it can be a hassle to park around the neighborhood. read more

Such a cute, quaint Catholic Church in the middle of the nice neighborhood behind Belmont strip area. I was in the area and wanted to go to mass so it was nice that I found this church. 5 pm Mass was straightforward, with a priest who was jovial spirited. There is not school or parking lot attached from what i remember. Parking is in and around the neighborhood. I'd definitely come back when I'm in the area. read more

I came to this church for the first time last Saturday for my friend's wedding. I have never step foot into this church before but have always seen it when I would ride my bike around this area with my husband. This church is small, but very beautiful and perfect for my friend's small wedding ceremony. The wood paneling all around the church (inside) is beautiful. Natural wood really gives interior something special. Loved the high archway ceilings. The focal point of the church makes for some beautiful and classic photos for anyone who chooses to have their wedding ceremony here. In the back of the church, on the 2nd floor, there is an organ where an organist can play and a live vocalist can sing to enhance your wedding ceremony (like it was done at my friend's wedding). A few things to mention that are not so awesome, let's say, (1) the lobby is a bit on the small side, (2) There is no restroom in this church and you have to go outside and around the building to use one (clean women's restroom though), (3) only street parking, but I don't mind the short walk from the residential street where we parked. But overall, this place was perfect for my friend's wedding, that brought friends and 2 families together. What more could you ask for? read more

I'm new to this parish and the first few mass services I attended have been wonderful! If street parking is not your forte, there's no parking lot sadly. Arriving about twenty minutes early gives me the time and peace to park wherever is comfortable, but I know I need to practice street parking more ahaha. Overall, the priest is great and I always walk out of St. Bartholomew's feeling closer to God! read more

I couldn't agree more with Angelique, directly below this review. I moved to Belmont Shores about 3 years ago and found this church because of its location. The church itself is very nice, the pastor(s) have thick accents but are understandable, and you can tell they have done their time in the church because they speak about very root issues but keep them current. A joke was made by one pastor to start his opening homily on Easter Sunday... I don't remember it verbatim, but it was along the lines of: A man and his wife went to Jerusalem with her dying mother to get her last rights where Jesus lived. While they were their, the mother in law unfortunately passed, and the man who ran the cemetery asked the husband, would you like to bury your mother in law here, or send her back to the states for burial? The man replied, OH NO, I heard about a man who was buried here once and rose again in three days... I don't want that happening again! So, when I get to church, I go here... read more

I enjoyed walking to mass every morning when I lived in the neighborhood. the side chapel with stained glass windows our lady, with plagues of Our Lady of Sorrows was my favorite place to pray in private with the Lord. I even stumbled onto the most beautiful purple (Italian) chaplet of the seven sorrows. A perfect place to pray for mothers and Our Lady. read more

Came here for a Baptism, and was in awe of the gorgeous structure and decor. The facility is very clean, and staff very friendly. Parking is along the street, so you'll have to keep a lookout for a good spot. read more

My husband and I got married at St. Bartholomew in April. We have always loved this church and the beautiful architecture so we felt it was the perfect church to get married in. The staff members are all so friendly and communicative. We were especially pleased with Fr. Mark. We met with him a few times prior to our wedding and each time it was like we were catching up with a friend. The Holy Spirit shines through him! The ceremony for our wedding was very important to my husband and I. We wanted to keep it as traditional as possible. St. Bartholomew has an organ which sounds so beautiful - something we were so excited to hear at our wedding Mass. However, bear in mind that if you are hiring a professional cantor as we did, the music director, Brian, will NOT play with this professional unless he rehearses with him/her prior to the event. As with our experience, at the last minute, Brian would not play the organ for the parts we selected as our professional wedding cantor could not schedule a time to meet. This was very disappointing to both my husband and I as we were looking forward to hearing the organ throughout the Mass. Regardless, our wedding music was beautiful and something we will remember fondly. Joyce, the wedding coordinator is very sweet and prompt when it comes to the rehearsal. You will be asked beforehand to fill out a sheet of paper outlining the details of your wedding party, Mass readings, etc. However, one very important information that was not relayed to us until minutes before walking down the aisle was that the photographer CANNOT be in the aisle to take pictures of the first kiss, etc. This was extremely disappointing and shocking to hear minutes before the ceremony was going to begin. This is something that should be disclosed to the bride and groom when they inquire about holding their ceremony at the church. Everyone wants a perfect picture of their first kiss, so I am happy to have had a professional photographer who could capture this moment for us. Additionally, the flower girls cannot throw flower petals down the aisle, a tradition that is so precious but unable to be done. Also, you are not allowed to take pictures in the front of the church (the most picturesque part of the building.) These are just things to keep in mind if you are considering getting married here. Overall, we are pleased with what we feel was the most important part, the priest and the reverence of the ceremony - we felt the presence of Christ through Fr. Mark and it made the day absolutely perfect. Thank you Fr. Mark and to the staff who helped facilitate this day for us!! read more

My grand daughter was baptized here 2 Years ago . Lovely ceremony and very enthusiastic Deacon . Well prepared instructors for Baptismal meeting for parents and Godparents. When I visit here I go to daily Mass . Close knit group of parishioners godaily. Not too friendly to outsiders . I am a bit alarmed at how casual the Eucharistic Ministers and presenters of gifts are dressed.( Dressed for beach , Pilates, tennis shoes and sandals and wrinkled T -shirts and leggings). I don't consider myself Catholic... nor a Born Again Christian... A buddhist... a taoist... I consider myself spiritual because I believe in a HIGHER being out there to help us out. The Christian God, our higher self, the Virgin Mary, Saints, Angels... I always love coming to St. Bartholomew's because I feel at peace when I come here. You're always welcomed by the local residents and minister. There's something there that I can't seem to point my finger at. I can't even find the right word to describe this uplifting feeling that encompasses me when I step into and out of this place. I feel that choosing an amazing word is not enough to describe the feeling inside me. I pray to everything... Mother Nature, the stars, God, Jesus, Mary, Ganesha, Quan Yin... I feel that when I come here all of it makes sense. I would suggest to spend some time at the grotto with the Virgin Mary. It's my favorite spot where I feel warm, peaceful, loved, and cared for. My son got married here, so it was the only reason I visited. Immediately, I found out there is no parking lot! Well, I guess a parking lot in this area of Long Beach would be crazy...land is worth way too much. I used to be a practicing Catholic, so I've been to a lot of cold, dank, and monstrous churches. Went here for three years when I lived in Belmont Shore. Friendly people, priests, etc. However, after I moved I wanted my daughter to be baptized there. They told me no, since I no longer lived in the neighborhood even though I went there every Sunday for three years. Not going back. read more

My wife and I have been attending St Barts since we moved to Long Beach in 2007. We have felt very welcomed since we began attending and enjoy the fact that there are many younger families who attend as well. The parish is progressive in nature for a Catholic Church and focused on helping the surrounding Long Beach community. Being agnostic most of my life I appreciate the fact that our priest is pragmatic and not doctrinaire. The community is our favorite part of St. Barts. The 9:30 mass is the children's mass and we often stay till 11:30 or 12 enjoying the coffee and donuts and letting the kids play in the parish hall. There are regular dance classes with child care, smaller faith groups and clubs, and other assorted activities throughout the year. read more

A very nice church in the middle of Belmont Shore, yet a little difficult to understand what the entrance and overall mass structure is.. I suggest coming in early to find a seat. This mass has a really nice band that plays every Sunday. It is an overall nice experience. read more

I've been going to St. Bart's since I moved to Long Beach more than 10 years ago. I tried a few other Catholic churches before settling here. The pastor --and the retired pastors in residence-- are unlike most older priests I've ever encountered. Their homilies are relevant with current times, funny, interesting and never long enough that my mind starts to wander. They also never make you feel like you're any more a sinner than they are. Outside of mass, they're easy to talk to (even during confession, which I still get nervous about), warm and welcoming. The same can be said about the visiting priests as well. In fact the whole congregation is pretty welcoming. There are a lot of events for the parish that help maintain a nice sense of community from the annual picnics to the coffee and donuts after every mass and other random events throughout the year. Another thing I appreciate is the diversity among the other churchgoers. I see all ages, colors, orientations and backgrounds here on Sunday. The priests and parishoners at St. Bart's truly have built a wonderful Catholic community. read more

Please ask parents with small children to use the children's room in the church so that we can hear what the priest is saying during Mass. Also, the music at the 8:00 am is too loud. This is such a great place to come together and worship our belief in GOD. The priests really try to make it a more "Modern" church by adapting to our times now and not so much on the past. This really helps because it does not alienate any of its parishioners. It is a small church but that adds to its "Likeability" factor. I have felt compelled to take a more active role in the church as a Eucharistic Minister & Catechist because of this. Overall, St. Bartholomew is a fantastic church for all. read more
