This place is not only ideal for finding presents for your friends or colleagues, but it's also great to treat yourself. This is what I would recommend: try out their jams and chutneys; in fact, you just pick the ones with the "Gold Taste Award" label then you shouldn't go wrong...they really deserve that award! And even if you don't need anything...I'm almost sure you wouldn't walk out this store empty-handedly...it's that good!

With so many great deli's and cake shops along the Broadway it's a nice place to come to get away for the afternoon. W Martyn is one of the more old fashioned tea and cake shops that has been in business for over a century. I love the fact that I can pop in here, just as past family members have done so over the years, and still be guaranteed to find great food and the same friendly, family run atmosphere the shop has always had. The interior is the same too and the staff will wait behind a condiment stacked counter to serve you, before passing you onto the little window counter to pay. They also use old fashioned weighing scales and a ladder to reach the higher shelves. After all, why change a good thing? The fresh roast coffee wafting through the door is enough to bring you inside and then you're spoilt for choice with traditional English treats. I'm actually in love with their Farmhouse Fruit Cake and I now can't have a cup of tea without it.

Okay, it's a greengrocers, so you have loads of fresh fruit and veg and it is much better value than Sainsbury's or any of the other Grocers in Muswell Hill. It has a well stocked fridge (why does fridge have a d in it, but refrigerator doesn't?), with plenty of cans and cartons, including real coke in glass bottles! It also sells all the usual stuff a corner shop should have, cereals, bog roll, foreign looking veg in jars. It is the only place that sells Lea and Perrins Garlic Sauce which is amazing if you haven't tried it. It's the kind of shop you can walk in, leave the change on the counter and yell what you've had (that said I go in twice a day). Family owned, family ran business, and don't we need more of them in the world today. It loses a star, because Mali the owner isn't always open before 7 when I leave despite claiming to be open 6 till midnight. That said, many a night he's open till much later if there's people around. Support your local businesses people!!!

The first couple of times i let it go due to the infamous pandemic, but the shop never answers the phone when you call them and are constantly short changing customers. The further into this shop you venture the stronger the smell of urine becomes. Obviously not a good thing and put me off buying orange juice tonight. Also the staff aren't very friendly and the review below is right there is always a queue due to the lack of till staff. BUT, there is actually a decent selection here which is sooo much cheaper than the overpriced budgens next door. Highlights include frozen pizzas, frozen veg and party snacks. I'm not going to overdo it, the food is not going to keep you healthy but this is a cheap oasis in a pricey region. They do have a limited fresh section with fruits and meats too.

As far as the store itself--it isn't the biggest place, and it doesn't carry everything but as far as the value--you can definitely stretch your pound here! Some drawbacks are alot of the choices of fresh fruit and veggies are gone by mid-afternoon, they don't always have the same selections, and you have to purchase your bags. You honestly can't beat the value, if you live nearby--this place is an absolute steal!

On top of it, they come along with this cheezy-sounding marketing splur: "On every COOK dish you'll find the name of the chef who prepared your food." Yet, sceptical or not, my curiosity outweighed and so I popped in the other day and browsed their selection. The folks in the store were very friendly and offered samplings, which is always a nice touch. I then asked someone for a recommendation and the she told me that I should try the "Moroccan Harissa Chicken" and the "Minted Couscous" on the side. And so I followed her advise, as well as the cooking instructions on the packaging later at home. And let me tell you, I was seriously surprised as how good this tasted. Indeed, the folks at Cook are definitely staying true to their motto: "Our food looks and tastes homemade (maybe even a bit better!)" I'm convinced of this great concept and I'm planning a trip to the Cook store in Muswell Hill as I'm typing this. It might be not as affordable as the stuff you get at Coop or Sainsbury's, but it tastes so much better!
