This little place next to Wholefoods in Giffnock is a haven of wine, craft spirits and craft beers - three of my favourite things! I had always thought it would be expensive, but I was very wrong. For instance in the same day I saw (and bought) an excellent NZ white wine for £7... and then saw the exact same bottle for sale in Waitrose at £15! It's worth noting there is no minimum purchase any more, as I believe this might have put people off in the past. The experts who work there are really helpful too, and won't suggest things out of your budget which I always find puts me off approaching people for assistance in a lot of shops "No sir you don't want this item, why not have this other one instead which has a much higher mark up for us" - none of that here! The selection of craft beers is really extensive, and pretty cheap too - although these are all only available in bulk. Watch out for good deals on the beers as they approach their best before dates too.

First up, I was very impressed with the selection available online and the price - I managed to get a really nice prosecco (Prosecco Frizzante Torri della Marca NV) for £6.99 a bottle and it's definitely one of my all-time favourites. Then, the glass hire. It's just £1 per glass and you get that back when you return the glasses. What a deal! They have wine glasses, flutes and tumblers and they'll deliver them with the wine. (You can also get ice, ice buckets and chillers too!) I placed the order online and within about 30 minutes the Giffnock store phoned to arrange delivery for a convenient time the following day. I really can't fault them and found this transaction incredibly smooth and hassle-free. In future, I might arrange to collect the order in person so they can put it in the car for me.

The front of the shop is a gift shop, and then at the back they have a booze section so it's easy to find what you're looking for. My father-in-law is a rum drinker and sadly on this visit, they were all out of rum. Their selection is mainly whisky so that's totally fine - they do have some bottles of other spirits though, like Pickering's Gin, New Amsterdam Vodka and Sambuca. I can't say much about the prices as I didn't end up buying anything but I like that they have some unusual offerings you might not find elsewhere. So all up, a nice wee shop to pop into if you're looking for a present for a whisky drinker!

I mean, it's never going to be a destination wine shop for…read moreme but if I'm in the area, I would definitely go here to get a bottle of wine over the nearby supermarket, that's for sure. This Oddbins is on the fabulous Skirving Street and generally has a pretty good range for whatever you're looking for. We didn't want anything specific, just some "weekend alcohol" - I went for wine whereas Graeme had a look around the beer section. At the moment they have quite a few January offers and I was happy with their offerings around the £5 mark per bottle. I'm not sure what beers Graeme got but they looked like hipster craft ones so he seemed happy. Service is nice and friendly, and I'm sure if you needed help they could give it. On this occasion I was happy just to pick something and give it a shot but if it was a special occasion or a gift I'd definitely ask for help. They'll wrap your wine up nicely in paper too, which I always like as it makes me feel that bit more fancy.

All of those things, and more. It wasn't cheap (well, it was sometimes, but not usually), but I liked it. What happened? Oddbin's parent company more or less went to the wall, and all the stores shut with the exception of the most profitable ones who were taken over by new owners. The new owners appear intent on driving this place into the ground. £9.49 for a bottle of (yuck) Blossom Hill? Check. £9.99 for a bottle of Isla Negra? Check. Not only have this new mob stocked up on the most bland, generic, pointless examples of mass-market crap to ever blight the face of the earth, but they have then decided to overprice them to oblivion. Gone are the days of picking up a cheeky Bordeaux, loving it, popping in the next week to find that;" there's no more, but how about this one instead?!" Gone are the days of Schneider Weisse Adventinus (even better at 4 for £8) or a cheeky case of Schofferhofer Hefe. Gone are the days of those wee orange spicy thai ricecakes in a green paper bag that were horrendously overpriced. Even gone are the days of asking the staff for recommendations. Imagine - "what would go with the roast I'm cooking tonight, the JP Chenet or the Jacobs Creek" - two years ago you'd have been laughed out of the place! Also gone is the excitement of walking in, not quite expecting what you were going to come out with - THAT was the magic of Oddbins. The new owners have ripped the heart of of this place. Generic crap like Carling (who deliberately drinks this?!), white Zinfandel and Bells whisky. I feel sorry for the workers, It's a shadow of its former self and it will NOT survive lest it's brought back to its former glories post-haste. SHAWLANDS DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER HADDOWS/THRESHERS (why do you think they all closed?) Shawlands needs its old Oddbins back. Run well, it would thrive.

A wee update as I've now been back to Pane e Vino to try their takeaway options. I fancied a…read moresandwich and initially ordered a vegetarian sandwich with grilled aubergine and peppers, but they were all out of aubergine. Sad times. I went with my second choice which was the pastrami, Emmental & gherkin which is served on foccacia. It was made fresh while I waited and everything was prepared for my order - the pastrami and Emmental sliced then and there, which was nice to see. It was all wrapped up in greaseproof paper and came to £4.50 which is a little more than I'd normally like to pay for a sandwich. That being said, it was lovely and everything was perfectly constructed and portioned. There is seating inside the deli as well, so you can get your sandwich (or pasta) to have in, which I think I'll try next time.

Bread, Ham, Cheese Please…read more.. So decided to go for a hurl* the other day and got a bit hungry, so stopped at Pane e Vino for a plate of soup and a piece. It's old school and every corner of this deli is an Italian grocery discovery. But for now it was immediate consumption we were after. There were two soups on offer, both veg brothy (£3.50) but being cold outside that was ok and there're plenty of sandwiches (£4.50-£5.50) to choose from, but no soup and sandwich deal :-/ There's a feel of community here and we happened to stumble upon the "largest panettone in Scotland" raffle. All good fun and I can see why the warmth of service draws regulars back for their Sunday morning cappuccino. Just be aware though, when you order a ham and cheese sandwich (and there are many varieties of ham and cheese here), that's exactly what you get - Bread, ham, cheese. No mayo, lettuce or tomato, but the coffee can moisten your palate. * hurl: a ride or drive in a vehicle (usually with wheels).

Wow, another caged wine shop? I only just visited my first one (GG Brothers on Argyle Street) and…read morenow I've visited a second one in a matter of weeks! What's a caged wine shop? Essentially, you walk into the shop and you're in a cage with all the booze on the other side. Clearly it's to stop you being able to steal anything and is a slightly surreal feeling when you're not used to it. Weaver Wines is a bit more classy in that you're mostly behind glass instead of a cage but the sensation is the same. I was after a couple of bottles of wine, and a wee treat for myself. Being in a glass box means it can be hard to tell the shop assistant exactly what you want (especially when you don't speak Spanish) but we got there eventually. They sell Drygate Apple Ale so that was clearly what I was going to get for myself (if there's a better beer out there, I don't want to know about it). You can pay by card although there's a 50p fee which isn't something you tend to encounter much these days. Along this street, your other options for booze are mostly supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Co-Op) although there is an Oddbins on Skirving Street. Prices here seemed pretty reasonable to me.

The man behind the counter (whose name eludes me) was friendly, super informative, and just a great guy to chat with. He handled all our questions with patience because he understood what an overwhelming selection they had. Seriously, how does such a tiny shop have such a killer variety of beers? They didn't just have a wall of IPA's and call it a day (like many "craft beer" places I'd been to). They had a selection to cover every single taste profile you could think of and some that had never even occurred to you. We left with a box of booze, literally, and made quite the splash at the birthday. It was a wonderful time had by all because this Wee shop was our ace up the sleeve. Next time I'm in Glasgow I'm going back to this killer place.

They do have a pretty good selection of intoxicants inside, also piled up to the ceiling. If you take too long trying to decide what you want though, the staff may lose patience with you and wander off, tutting. There are some pretty good deals to be had, I remember getting some cheap Gaymers cider here - good because of the name and its cideryness! A perfectly adequate offy, and a local business!

On first looks and entering it's not a particularly appealing sight, the booze caged behind some prison like black bars, but peer through those bars and there's a bevy of bevvy for you to peruse from your big brands to smaller scale brews including Fallen Brewing, Fyne Ales and Williams Bros. to name a few. You can get a bit of banter if you like you're fruit beers, any time I ask for a Timmermans I get the third degree about whether or not I actually like it but for me that's just part of the experience. To have a place like this just round the corner is a joy to behold especially on a dreich April night. Not asked if they do requests yet but I'm hoping they do.
